Optic durability is such a weird topic. The general engineering idea is to make it work with a margin of safety, but by focusing on *durability*, you quickly reach the point of diminishing returns. In other words, obsession with protection makes it needlessly heavy and costly. I know it sounds snobby, but it’s more important to “shape up” than to “bulk up”. By that, I mean that it’s better to train to be more careful and clean under stress than to buy the nuclear option. Ultimately, optics are just tools. If the user is a machine that turns optics into scrap metal, maybe change should start at the user, not the optic.
@SinginShooter Жыл бұрын
Mike, formerly of Swampfox Optics, basically explained that their optics were heavy because a lot of their market were guys who test optics by beating it against a tree. Just look at the 1x Blade - 13oz! Brick shithouse! I forget what bigger channel tested the Arrowhead LPVO by giving it to a Wookie who threw the rifle over dunes and shot it with birdshot.
@ChucksSEADnDEAD Жыл бұрын
Optic durability is that way because at one point optics were not considered rugged enough for combat use. And then "combat approved" optics and laser aiming modules got killed by the SCAR 17 due to a quirk in recoil impulse and harmonics, which lead to products being redesigned to handle this unforseen situation. While there's a point of diminishing returns you always have the issue of unknowns. Like Sig making a pistol that was drop safe because it passed a drop safety test. It just happened that the pistol would go off if dropped at a specific angle, but that wasn't part of the safety test. Point being, you shouldn't be obsessed with durability but if you design something for the "shape up" with zero concern for bulk, something really stupid is going to kill it and you'll have to redesign the thing.

I feel like both L&S and InrangeTV simply were operating out of ignorance here. Astroturfing, and then later the product turning out to be very mid or even complete trash occurs more often than not. Pointing out that the LP-1 had the hallmarks of a stereotypical astroturfing campaign is not a hot take. It literally did. There we no negative reviews at all and you couldn't buy it (without a long wait). Quite literally the definition of a red flag. Now not every market blitz means the product is trash, it just means consumers should operate under caution until the product is purchasable by the market as a whole (and sufficient time has passed). I understand L&S perhaps not understanding this distinction, and thus taking Hops statement as a direct attack. But I'm a bit flabbergasted that InrangeTV reacted(Sinistral) in such a emotional manner to such a basic comment. It makes me seriously question objectivity where I didn't before.

The real hypocritical part was that the L&S CEO is hyper defensive of the LP-1 having so much "R&D time" while also admitting in the same breath that they "borrowed" a lot of LCO internals. Essentially, they spent a couple of years ripping off the LCO and editing their homework just enough to claim the R&D was a painstakingly long & expensive journey in originality.
@HawaiiFoodAndFun Жыл бұрын
I think the R&D is questionable. They said they "engineered" it but like you said they copied the LCO, but then they bounced ideas back and forth w Hong Kong for a year and a half. So when it was finally produced they didn't own the earlier designs. Which opened it up to Turkey to produce an earlier version (hence the CR2 battery) I bought one of the very first LP1s and was also one of the first to do a video review. It wasn't a negative video but I didn't gush over it so it mostly went ignored. They thanked other video creators but guess mine wasnt up to par. I also didn't compare it to the Aimpoint/Eotech, which was the style at the time. I was also about to buy their pistol sight and asked them a question, and they never got back to me (even though I bought the LP1 previously) I had to search around reddit until I found the answer. Reddit gonn reddit. It's a hive of scum and villainy.

Very interesting watching them in their natural habitat.
@BringerOfD Жыл бұрын
Once a red dot has found its rail it will typically stay for the rest of its life. Only rarely does one migrate, only doing so when it's home falls into disrepair and is no longer suitable. This invasive species introduced from Sweden has quickly taken root across the Continental United States, stealing precious habitat from indigenous species of optics.

The random little gifts they sent out with the products for the like extra 2 week wait. Kinda sad to see them get themselves involved in drama over someone not liking their optic, especially when their optic really isnt bad at all. Did you watch all of the related content? It's a little deeper than focustripp not liking the optic. His presentation of the testing and communication was dishonest, that's really hard to dispute. It's just as hard to swallow his feigned indignation over "bribery" when he runs a site and channel that transparently promotes certain products in exchange for money. The outrage seemed much more artificial than the hype around the optic, and stinks of industry hit job. No detractions of the LP-1 - it having commonality with or being almost identical to other optics (SIG & holosun), it using parts sourced overseas (every single optic), or building relationships with reviewers or contractors (SIG) - is exclusive to L&S. And the idea of industry "friendships" without money changing hands coloring or informing a review is a really big swing from a TFB TV contributor, arguably the biggest beneficiaries of this treatment in the community. One thing has always been true of the free market - it's far more cost effective to crush or buy out a competitor than it is to invest in the requisite R&D to innovate or engineer something that provides an advancement. There hasn't been innovation from any of them in a long time, and it has a lot to do with the insane markups they're able to demand due to their DoD pricing.

I pre ordered the LP-1 for $275. Motivation for that purchase was to support PSR (Print Shoot Repeat), and I needed a durable red dot for my AK. They contacted me after SHOP informed me they were about to ship it out asking if I could delay another month for a new feature, wasn't informed what it was but turned out it was their version of shake awake. Overall I still appreciate this optic, I don't plan on doing night vision shooting with my AK. I am surprised by the level of immaturity going off by the head of the company. At the end of the day the products serves the purpose of what I got it for and they already have my money. I think it's still decent for what it executes and hope the company drops the cease and desist and apologizes for their inability to handle criticism cause it's not a good look and would hold me back from any other purchases.
@HawaiiFoodAndFun Жыл бұрын
I gave them a good chance. Threw money at them and was one of the first to make an LP1 video. I thought it was like the Sig 8T or the Holosun 512 and called it that. It didn't fit their eotech criteria so they left mine alone and praised the videos where they sent product too. Pre-ordered their pistol sight and after I sent money they changed the design 2 more times and pushed back the release 6 months. Had to work to get my money back. Made a video about that too....

Personally I feel like a chunky dot like the LP-1 isn't great for something as lightweight as a WWSD but Russell has been shooting competitively since I was playing Goldeneye at sleepovers so his opinion is probably worth more than mine.

You briefly mentioned things along the line of Berry compliance, with Sigs optics being mostly made in mostly democratic countries. Not all of their optics need to be, just ones that are being sold to the Army, and even then a lot of components can be exempt from sourcing them from China, especially if they can prove that it wouldn't be feasible to pay to have someone else make a component that's readily available in a country of non ideal origin. I wouldn't be surprised if a company their size had two different designations on products, with one being US made, I've seen it from companies with much smaller reach. The politics behind the system are weird, and it's not infallible.
