Are speed limits a joke?

Speed limits are important and they can save lives if implemented appropriately! However, in Victoria, Australia, our Government is continually reducing speed limits. Sometimes from 20 km/h, and where it doesn't suit the conditions!
Every day we see almost no-one obeying the set speed limits and we as driving educators must abide by the rules set and teach our students to do the same.
This video has been made as I'm disheartened working in an industry where the set road rules are continually broken, especially speed limits. It begs the question, are they a joke?
Most people should understand that the slower you go, the less severe the outcome will be if you are to have a collision. Lower speed limits are supposed to protect us and others on the roads.
More importantly, is driving to the conditions, being aware and observant of our surroundings. Showing respect, common courtesy and road etiquette. Keeping a safe distance, having patience and accepting that we aren't always going to get somewhere on time!
Every day I just see more frustration and impatience on the roads which I boil down to a broken system, but that's just my opinion...
Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Please be constructive and keep things civil. Cheers.

For everyone that lives in Victoria, Australia - the 2023-24 fine and demerit amount for speeding less than 10 km/h is $240 & 1 demerit! Each financial year the cost goes up but this year they have increased the demerits...

It's stupid. I had a driver tailgate me while I was on my bike. He claimed I was doing 20km/h in a 40 zone, while I know he was trying to do 50 or more, which he did once I got overtaken. I raged at the driver since tailgating a motorcyclist puts them at risk and for being a douchebag about the whole situation. He had 2 kids in the car.

Thanks for the comment! I feel your pain, as we experience this all the time. I see mum and dads with kids in their vehicle doing risky, idiotic manoeuvres at times and it's completely irresponsible.

Excellent point! Growing weary you say? What do you, personally think is the safest and most practical approach to this problem, regardless of rules/laws? I believe the safest and most practical approach, is to drive at the speed most appropriate to my environment, including the other vehicles on the road.

Mac, you legend! Thanks for the comment and question. I mentioned in the description that more importantly, is driving to the conditions, being aware and observant of our surroundings. Showing respect, common courtesy and road etiquette. Keeping a safe distance, having patience and accepting that we aren't always going to get somewhere on time! Speed is more measurable for the Government.

Speed limits are put in place for a reason. I totally agree with all you've said and I've had many instances where I've been abused for following the speed limit.

Yes, the reason is revenue generation and petty control over the peasants. Oh I'm sorry, I spoke too broadly. The *real* reason speed limits even started was because of the oil crisis in the early '70s, as a fuel conservation measure. But then the Powers-That-Be saw how lucrative it was, and just kept with it, becoming ever more oppressive in enforcing ever more ridiculous limits, because the peasantry would roll over and kiss the hands that were whipping them. Look to the Autobahn, with long stretches with absolutely no speed limits. They have some of the lowest accident statistics in the world. Because the drivers are trained, disciplined and follow proper etiquette on those roads. That's really what we need, not more limits and certainly not more coffer-enriching "enforcement" with all the hideous tools of a fascist state like hidden cameras and surprise "gotcha" speed traps.

Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience, Kathy. 🙏🏽 It's sad, but it happens. This is why I created this video. Hopefully, it gains some traction, and more people see what we have to deal with every day. It's also evidence of a broken system.

@@lightyagami1752 I appreciate your comment and agree with you in regard to Germany! I've driven there twice and the respect on the road is fantastic. Germans piss excellence when it comes to driving! From the education, licencing and enforcement stand point - it all seems to be on point. In Australia, it's quite pathetic across the board, hence why I made this video and have plenty more to come...

@@CRUDEDriving Thank you. I respect driving instructors like you seeking to elevate the standard of driving more than I do lawmakers making silly and outdated laws. I loved driving in Germany. My most memorable experiences were on the Nordschleife (Ring) in a BMW M4 receiving professional race driver instruction.

@@lightyagami1752 thank you for saying that as I'm not your average driving instructor. Awesome to see you were on the ring! 🤩 I've been to Germany twice now, driven over 200 km/h on the autobahn and drove on Nürburgring Nordschleife twice in hire cars, once in a Ford Fiesta ST, second in a Honda Civic Type R - both manual h-pattern w/clutch and by myself. I love driving, so much so that I teach it every day in reality to then come home and play racing games on my racing simulator or with a controller, depending on the game. Driving is in my blood! ❤

That means speed limits are not relevant to practical speed. It is for the government to bring in revenue. In Australia, the speed limits are coming down lower and lower. It soon be walking faster tham driving.😂

We now have a fair few 30 km/h streets in the Collingwood area. I'm all for practical speed limits where it suits the conditions, but too often, I feel some are impractical...

Agree with you bro. I had an instance where i was safely following a car at 110kmhr overtaking on a highway limited to 110kmhr last night. But the car behind me was tailgating me so dangerously that I couldn't see his headlights. When i could move over to the left lane I reckon he went past at 125kmhr and was throwing hands in his car because i had slowed him down over 200 metres .... Im in TAS, just need to get a dash cam for this shit.... Goaty

Thanks for the comment and your experience with this! 🙏🏽 I'm guessing this is the legendary Goaty from GGs? I feel your pain, and if you have to exceed the speed limit for your safety, then go for it. The rules are a joke in general. As long as people do things safely, there shouldn't be an issue.

Glad you talked about this. XD we (fam) had an encounter once, a lady who wanted to speed up. At a light she got off the car to get at us. Good for the light turning. 🫠 it's weird that they would get mad at you for obeying the limit. When they could be finding a way for them to change/raise the limit a bit at least for the area . ¯\(°_o)/¯

Dude, thanks for your comment! You're a legend! Speed limits are measurable and easy for the Government to implement but they just seem to be not suited to the conditions most of the time. It's obviously not just an issue here in Australia but also worldwide. Many people get annoyed because of this and drive aggressively. :(
