Just finished the Unite for Springfield zoom event proceeds going to support Support Center and the Springfield City School District to help Haitian families. They raised almost $83,000 in an hour and had to set two new goals because they reached both in less than 20 minutes. This is what America is about. 🇺🇸💙

That’s awesome. I wonder if we were given the option while paying taxes to pay extra to a local school or public program. I wonder if that would promote people to support programs they believe in and it would incentivize people to engage and promote their interests. Giving people a choice instead of complaining about raising taxes.

And the fact remains even if we defeat Trump this time, P25 will still be ready for the next Republican president. Thanks to the Heritage Foundation, we'll never be rid of it. There is literally no way to get rid of it. The only way to keep it out of our elections is for Democrats to win forever in the future. I think your conclusion about the way people treat neighbors IRL vs on social media is _way_ too optimistic. Before social media existed, in genocide after genocide, from the Holocaust to Rwanda to Bosnia, people who once got along with their neighbors ended up killing them. Violent authoritarian politics can overwhelm personal ties pretty easily. That woman apologizing to her Haitian neighbor still had her Trump gear on. If I were her neighbor, I certainly wouldn't count on her help if Trump wins in November and the mass deportations begin. Don't get me wrong; social media can encourage genocide. But traditional mass media like radio, tv, and the print media have been more than enough in the past. And there's no magic of neighborliness that can protect marginalized populations when it happens.

Reading conservative social media makes me despair for America. Conservatives used to talk about the founders, well the founders thought we needed a virtuous citizenry to have a republic. Conspicuously lacking in conservative social media is any concept of personal virtue. Being anti-trans and anti-abortion is supposed to substitute for personal virtue and decency.

The conservatives talking about personal virtue etc are not missing, they have rebranded themselves into a particular branch of self-help and now claim to be apolitical. And occasionally sneak in an overt political message as if it was just part of the whole.

I don’t disagree, but I’m not sold on the comparison between the US beating China to social media vs China beating the US in AI. Social media can easily be weaponized, but AI has a much greater chance to be weaponized in a number of different directions all at once. It doesn’t feel like it’s a simple matter of integrating AI into society to achieve a ‘win’ (the idea of winning in an AI race feels very fluid). It’s integration while also protecting society at large from harmful AI and that’s a tall order. Even if you add safety blocks in one area, that’s still just a single country. You can’t really prevent a hostile power from using it to build a better weapon, nor can you really stop the defense industry from using those black budgets for some truly heinous purposes. I’m not sure what the solution is, but it’s an absolutely fascinating topic. In the infosec world we’ve been seeing machine learning get better at detecting attacks, but the bad guys are also using them to make even better malware. It’s hard to unring a bell.

I'm very impressed with Tristan Harris' work to make social media social again and bring it back to its original intent of bringing people, ideas, creativity, etc. together. That's how progress happens. Instead its become the complete opposite - devisive, dumbing down, propagandist, etc. There will always be bad actors but on today's social media hiding behind an avatar means you can be as stupid and crazy as you want with no recourse. I hope at some point we can get rid of the avatars and keep people from hiding who they really are. Connect them to their words and hold them accountable for them.

Actually, in Ohio, if you can prove your residence in the state, you can get a license. Look it up. The state of Ohio does not require its residents to take a driving test. It's Ohio's state law that produces bad drivers. Stop blaming Haitians for bad driving. Change the fucking law.

I looked it up. It's untrue. First you get a learner's permit, then you take a driving course and after six months you take your road test. Then you get a license. That's according to the government site.
@jaekae13
@jaekae13 Күн бұрын
As someone from Ohio... This is not true. (Unless something has changed in the past decade or so, since I was last there.) Every state does tend to have different requirements for things like how old you need to be to get your learner's permit, how old you need to be to get your license, how many hours of driving you must practice, and whether or not driver's ed is required. But Ohio is no worse in that regard than any other state (and is better than some). You still must get a learner's permit first, and you still must pass both a written test and a driving test (at the DMV/DoL) with a certified instructor. The driving test is pass/fail. There is no limit as to how many times you can retake the test, but you MUST pass it before you can obtain your driver's license. To my knowledge, that is true in every state. Some states have insanely (imo) few restrictions about what is required to get your learner's permit, but to get an actual license, as far as I know, all 50 states require you to pass a practical driving exam at the very least. (It is, however, true that a learner's permit does allow you to drive on public roads like anyone else... BUT you must have a licensed adult in the passenger seat with you, and they typically must be over the age of 21. Most states require you to pass a written exam in order to get your permit, but no practical test is required. People can disagree about whether or not that is safe for other drivers on the road, but it's permitted in every state, not just Ohio.)
@jaekae13
@jaekae13 Күн бұрын
Addendum: if you're talking about licensed drivers moving to Ohio from other states, then it is true that you do not need to retake any test in order to get an Ohio driver's license- you only need to prove residency and show a valid driver's license that was issued in another state. But that would still make your comment disingenuous, as a license from any other state IS still required. (I do not know what the regulations are for immigrants who obtained their licenses in other countries, but I would hazard a guess that it's different depending on the country in which you obtained the license.)

Navigating to this video uses an algorithm to deliver the webpage and video feed your device. Is it a short hand for a particular problematic content delivery? "Every time we make a user make a choice, as a designer, we see that as a failure." That quote is so damning to me. Every time you give a user freedom, that's considered a failure in design. Right in the middle of talking about how today's use of infinite scroll was an unintended side effect of an otherwise benign invention, they admit that the true intention that we see today was inherent in the design philosophy.

"What about Apple?" says a man who, apparently, is not aware that iPhones are not the only smartphones available.
@natbarmore
@natbarmore Күн бұрын
I’m pretty sure in this case, that’s clumsy, inaccurate shorthand for “the manufacturers, retailers, and service providers”. That said, it doesn’t seem like the panacea Jon implies it would be. I’m betting most people under 16 who have a smartphone didn’t buy it themselves. So determining age would trace it back to the over-18 parent who paid for it. Probably true for a majority of 16- and 17-year-olds, too. So now you have to layer on some way to capture whether the phone is for the purchaser or for someone else, and rely on them being both truthful and accurate. And what happens when a parent buys a phone for themselves and then fined it to their kid 2-3 years later when they buy a newer phone for themselves? Also, what if Favreau really _did_ mean just Apple phones, precisely because having the hardware, software, and user accounts all provided by the same company makes this sort of thing easier? Would we want to _not_ do it just because it would only help _some_ kids?

As someone currently working on a prototype of a social media project that is specifically designed to *not* prioritize engagement, I really enjoyed Tristan Harris's discussion on how to address the many issues around social media and technology. I've come to many of the same conclusions in terms of the many problematic design decisions that are made in the name of driving up engagement (or decisions they decide *not* to make because it will hurt engagement). It's a hard problem to solve since there is always an impossible balance of competing concerns and because any such system will always have both positive and negative aspects.

I just turned 70, and I am unusual in that as a young woman I was in the military and learning about computers in the early 70s and have been involved one way or another with the Internet since it's inception And working online through BBS long before the Internet. So I've riden this ride for a long time, and have the same concerns and the same observation as Harris. What this interview did for me was give me hope, and I loved more than anything else his analogy of how we handled the tobacco company and the success of that, and how that is reflected in what is being done now, along with his warning about AI supercharging it all.
