That’s awesome. I wonder if we were given the option while paying taxes to pay extra to a local school or public program. I think your conclusion about the way people treat neighbors IRL vs on social media is _way_ too optimistic. Before social media existed, in genocide after genocide, from the Holocaust to Rwanda to Bosnia, people who once got along with their neighbors ended up killing them. Violent authoritarian politics can overwhelm personal ties pretty easily. That woman apologizing to her Haitian neighbor still had her Trump gear on. If I were her neighbor, I certainly wouldn't count on her help if Trump wins in November and the mass deportations begin. Don't get me wrong; social media can encourage genocide. But traditional mass media like radio, tv, and the print media have been more than enough in the past. And there's no magic of neighborliness that can protect marginalized populations when it happens.

I don’t disagree, but I’m not sold on the comparison between the US beating China to social media vs China beating the US in AI. Social media can easily be weaponized, but AI has a much greater chance to be weaponized in a number of different directions all at once. It doesn’t feel like it’s a simple matter of integrating AI into society to achieve a ‘win’ (the idea of winning in an AI race feels very fluid). It’s integration while also protecting society at large from harmful AI and that’s a tall order. Even if you add safety blocks in one area, that’s still just a single country. You can’t really prevent a hostile power from using it to build a better weapon, nor can you really stop the defense industry from using those black budgets for some truly heinous purposes. I’m not sure what the solution is, but it’s an absolutely fascinating topic. In the infosec world we’ve been seeing machine learning get better at detecting attacks, but the bad guys are also using them to make even better malware. It’s hard to unring a bell.

Actually, in Ohio, if you can prove your residence in the state, you can get a license. Look it up. The state of Ohio does not require its residents to take a driving test. It's Ohio's state law that produces bad drivers. Stop blaming Haitians for bad driving. Change the fucking law.
@derronhall495Күн бұрын
I looked it up. It's untrue. First you get a learner's permit, then you take a driving course and after six months you take your road test. Then you get a license. That's according to the government site.
@jaekae13Күн бұрын
As someone from Ohio... This is not true. (Unless something has changed in the past decade or so, since I was last there.) Every state does tend to have different requirements for things like how old you need to be to get your learner's permit, how old you need to be to get your license, how many hours of driving you must practice, and whether or not driver's ed is required. But Ohio is no worse in that regard than any other state (and is better than some). You still must get a learner's permit first, and you still must pass both a written test and a driving test (at the DMV/DoL) with a certified instructor. The driving test is pass/fail. There is no limit as to how many times you can retake the test, but you MUST pass it before you can obtain your driver's license. To my knowledge, that is true in every state. Some states have insanely (imo) few restrictions about what is required to get your learner's permit, but to get an actual license, as far as I know, all 50 states require you to pass a practical driving exam at the very least. (It is, however, true that a learner's permit does allow you to drive on public roads like anyone else... BUT you must have a licensed adult in the passenger seat with you, and they typically must be over the age of 21. Most states require you to pass a written exam in order to get your permit, but no practical test is required. People can disagree about whether or not that is safe for other drivers on the road, but it's permitted in every state, not just Ohio.)
@jaekae13Күн бұрын
Addendum: if you're talking about licensed drivers moving to Ohio from other states, then it is true that you do not need to retake any test in order to get an Ohio driver's license- you only need to prove residency and show a valid driver's license that was issued in another state. But that would still make your comment disingenuous, as a license from any other state IS still required. (I do not know what the regulations are for immigrants who obtained their licenses in other countries, but I would hazard a guess that it's different depending on the country in which you obtained the license.)
@StarlyshКүн бұрын
As a Ohioan, as long as I prove I’m a resident, I can get a state ID, but it is definitely not the same as a drivers license. You still need to take all the required steps and tests for getting a temp and then drivers license.

@natbarmoreКүн бұрын
I’m pretty sure in this case, that’s clumsy, inaccurate shorthand for “the manufacturers, retailers, and service providers”. That said, it doesn’t seem like the panacea Jon implies it would be. I’m betting most people under 16 who have a smartphone didn’t buy it themselves. So determining age would trace it back to the over-18 parent who paid for it. Probably true for a majority of 16- and 17-year-olds, too. So now you have to layer on some way to capture whether the phone is for the purchaser or for someone else, and rely on them being both truthful and accurate. And what happens when a parent buys a phone for themselves and then fined it to their kid 2-3 years later when they buy a newer phone for themselves? Also, what if Favreau really _did_ mean just Apple phones, precisely because having the hardware, software, and user accounts all provided by the same company makes this sort of thing easier? Would we want to _not_ do it just because it would only help _some_ kids?

It’s so interesting how progressives never want to actually ask the people dealing with this what they think. I guess that’s because they’re the, as Hillary so eloquently put it, “deplorables”, right?

@@conor7154it's amusing to watch white people hate and fear immigrants so much. Over the past 700 years, white people violently immigrated here and killed 98% of the Native American population who was here for tens of thousands of years. I guess one could say, karma.

As someone currently working on a prototype of a social media project that is specifically designed to *not* prioritize engagement, I really enjoyed Tristan Harris's discussion on how to address the many issues around social media and technology. I've come to many of the same conclusions in terms of the many problematic design decisions that are made in the name of driving up engagement (or decisions they decide *not* to make because it will hurt engagement). It's a hard problem to solve since there is always an impossible balance of competing concerns and because any such system will always have both positive and negative aspects.

“If you show me the incentive I will show you the outcome “ incentive is defined as ‘the thing that motivates or encourages someone to do something’ The original word origin of incentive is ‘ incantare’ which means “to charm, enchant or bewitch’. Thank you, I cannot even begin to tell you how important this interview with Tristan Harris is to someone like me. And to everybody who listened to it. I just turned 70, and I am unusual in that as a young woman I was in the military and learning about computers in the early 70s and have been involved one way or another with the Internet since it's inception And working online through BBS long before the Internet. So I've riden this ride for a long time, and have the same concerns and the same observation as Harris. What this interview did for me was give me hope, and I loved more than anything else his analogy of how we handled the tobacco company and the success of that, and how that is reflected in what is being done now, along with his warning about AI supercharging it all. Again thank you so much for this.
