Are the Upcoming Biomes actually Good Enough?

For the past few Minecons, we've been getting votes on what we want added to Minecraft in the future. There are now many biomes on the waiting list, but it's become unclear when, or if, we'll see these changes show up in the game. Let's take a look at when we might get these biomes updates and if what they promise is really up to scratch...

The time given for the voting was completely ridiculous - a grand total of 30 minutes for community interaction, limited to a specific time and requiring a twitter account. Not even 0.01% of the playerbase actually voted or was able to vote. If they were serious about community input they'd have the polls open for at LEAST an entire week, with the option to vote directly from the launcher or from the minecraft website - you know, making it accessible to as many players as possible?

JAiZ- I begged my parents to let me make a twitter account for like 2 mins but they said no. I wanted badlands to get updated, but, even though I paid Minecraft over 30 dollars in games, I have no say in the new updates whatsoever. I feel like many people feel the same way. Like you, I want Mojang to put it on the Minecraft website. I think the launcher wouldn’t be the best way, because many people use Bedrock, not Java. I totally agree with you though. My headcanon is that even now, 7 years later, the whole mojang team is just desperately trying to fix the deepseated coding issues with the java edition of the game, and every few months a siren goes off in the office and they spend a few hours coding a new update, send it out, then go back to fixing the game.

Mojang's update philosophy is just wrong. They don't want to shock the playerbase with too many features, but that's exactly what the game needs. When you ask players about their fondest memories in Minecraft, or the strongest ones, a lot of the responses are gonna be about starting out, not knowing the game, and being scared of the dark. Now that Minecraft has settled and most of the features haven't changed in ages (ahem, cave update), MInecraft is just too familiar, too unchallenging. I love 1.14 and 1.13 especially (like you said, 1.12's oceans are basically unplayable now) but the game really does need more

I think the biggest problem is the shallowness of new features implemented. Features like a new dolphin or fox aren't going to keep you playing. They are just things you look at for maybe 20 minutes and then the game is the same as it was before the update again. They need to add features that have unexpected behaviour. The observer block was a good example of this. Although it made block update detectors redundant, many new things were now possible, adding hundreds if not more hours of gameplay, even though I can't imagine Mojang spent a lot of time on developing that feature. I haven't played the game in years now because nothing new or innovative has been added since. If they would add something fresh that could offer more fun things to explore, I could consider playing again, but I'm afraid this will not happen anytime soon...

Savanna is the worst biome in the game. Roofed Forest is annoying, ugly, and is only used for the wood. Mesas have a cool block palette and that's it. Mega Taigas are my favourite biome and they still kinda suck. Bland, unpopulated, lack of foliage... The biomes in this game have always sucked. 1.13 was the best update since 1.7 because it overhauled half the world and added entirely new gameplay and meta. Unfortunately, it appears 1.13 was a fluke.

BakedPotato_ because 1.14 and 1.15 aren’t very good. 1.13 isn’t perfect, but it was a step in the right direction. 1.14 was disappointing because villages basically only got a mediocre reskin. Villages still seem hollow and are extremely vulnerable, requiring you to pour lots of time to protect it for minimal rewards. 1.15 is awful though. Bees are a cool edition and everything they added was fine, but to release it as a single update is absurd. Also1.14 has unfinished aspects and 1.15 didn’t even follow through with it lmao (blacksmith table and fletching table)

Sockmother we’ve always had small updates between big ones we had 1.7 which changed world gen massively(even out side the new biomes), then 1.8 which didn’t do much, 1.9 changed combat(for the better in my opinion) and made the end infinite, 1.10-1.12 were small, 1.13 overhauled oceans, 1.14 redid villages, and yea 1.15 was minor, but 1.16 is gonna completely overhaul the nether and adds 3D biome support(which could be used in a cave update)

I totally agree, these updates aren't biome updates. They are just extra features that happend to be in a certain biome. A actual biome change would require something like the new oceans or the upcoming nether, a special fog or different colors. For me the updates sound like they finished a biome off, for the last time, but the feel for the taiga biome didn't change at all. Mojang should: Put actual work into rethinking the biomes or rename the biome vote to feature vote.

This reminded of Better Than Wolves mod. Back in Beta 1.4 wolves were added. One of the moders, FlowerChild was dissapointed, that Mojang spent a month working on update and made only useless wolves. So, in the same amount of time he modded mechanical power mod and named it Better Than Wolves. In a month he added: cement, hibachi, block dispensers, cauldron (that actually boils food), new light block, detector block (think about observer, but back in Beta!), mill stone, hand crank, various side slabs,etc... I definitely agree that Mojang could work more effectively.

They're not creating a new game if they're just modding, now are they? Anything Mojang adds is an official product, which is more strictly regulated compared to unofficial mods. Modders also don't have to worry about budgets, pleasing shareholders, quality assurance, make sure it works on every system ever, doesn't conflict with anything, doesn't take up too many resources, doesn't infringe on other IPs, merchandising, administration and all that other fun business stuff.

Sure they don’t have to please shareholders, but if they really want MC to become immense again they really should do things like revolutionize the exploration and mining aspects of the game. Whitelight had recent video where he talks about adding dynamic systems to the game, and I agree that it needs that badly.

But I still think that the amount of uselss mobs has been increasing, for instance, you have the most useful mobs like Sheep (Wool and mutton), Cows(leather and beef), Chickens (meat and eggs), Golems, Horses,( tbh maybe even Striders 😒) , Villagers, Wolves, Cats, Blazes (probablythe most important mob because it's part of the games progession and potions, duh), Creepers (Gunpower) and Endermen and useless mobs like Llamas, Bees (yes, I think bees suck because they are so hard to farm) , Squid (you used to be able to milk them though), Parrots (ehh, they are still pretty neat to keep as pets) , Pandas, Polarbears (Top Tier Uselessness, can't even get their hide as a drop, which would be cool though), Turtles (yes you can make the stupid turtle helmet but it's not even worth the effort when you can just make an underwater breathing potion), Dolphins ( seriously, when was the last time you fed a Dolphin to find a ruin?), Foxs (cool game mechanics though), Fish (except maybe the puffer fish, because you can already get a lifetime supply of fish from afk fishing), Wandering Traders (I don't even trade, I just kill them for the leashes). I will tell you that some of the more recent useful mobs are the Drowned (because you get a trident with crazy new enchantments), Phantoms (Not really that useful but you do need them to repair your Elytra) and Pillagers (Some of the few hostile mobs you can fight during the day plus, you need to kill the captain to trigger a raid, where you can get some rare loot like Totems of Undying). I really thought about putting bees under useful but didn't because of all the times I raged quit after trying to farm them. Just one hit and they're all after you, of course you don't die but you lose all the bees you worked so carefully to farm. After writing all this, I realized that the most useful mobs are the ones that help you progess in the game, which is why the Blaze is probably the most useful mob because you need them to make potions, the most useful game mechanic in Minecraft and to make eyes of ender, in order to get to the end.

@@timtam3730 I still think that the mobs that we are getting from the nether update are some of the most useful mobs that we have gotten in a long time (even the zoglin because now we won't need lava to kill cows or other peaceful mobs). But I agree that with the other updates, we have gotten pretty useless mobs. I'm hoping that they have realized this and that is why they have made these new mobs have some kind of use other than aesthetic. On the other hand though I get the point that these useless mobs make the world more lively, but even then they should be adding these after they fix some of the game's glaring problems like caves and the end. Just one last thing, what are your opinions of the vulture that they will be adding with the badlands/mesa part of the biome vote. Personally, I think they are going to be Phantom level of annoying but without the membrane, which is going to make not just a useless mob, but one that might actually hurt the game experience.

well if you compare it to what a team of that size with that experience could have dine; yes. But I think the updates are coming out in good intervals with about the right amount of change so that you fully get the experience from each update but still often enough to make you have some interest in them. I think the largest issues are the many different play styles that a sandbox game offers. For example, you have the technical community (see the many times they reworked iron golem spawning in 1.14, even after release), the PvP community (who still haven’t gotten over 1.9 yet) and the modded community, who need a stable base to build on to make the mod frameworks - it takes a while for there to be a big shift in which version mod and mod pack devs use the most, in my time playing the game, there was 1.7.10 for a long time, then 1.10, and right now 1.12.2. Also don’t forget that the Java team are making major technical changes to improve performance every update, Bedrock is getting RTX support and also has a large number of major bugs still in that version, there are additional demands on a relatively small studio (compared to games with a similarly large install size), that still having these new updates come out once or twice a year, for free, is still a great thing.

Its a mediocre food source you can barely eat (because right clicking a grass/dirt block with it causes it to be placed instead of eating it) and you can't even craft any better foods with it. You can manually farm them much easier than making an automatic one using Foxes, and aside from the Sweet Berry trade that Butcher Villagers have, they can't be used for anything.

See, the problem with that is it encourages players to find ways to force the animals into serving them, which isn't really conservation. For example, people have come up with a number of ways to make use of Dolphins' Grace by putting dolphins on leads, which would be _very_ bad for real world dolphins. Honestly, it's kind of hard to put a conservation message in a game built around harnessing natural resources and bending the environment to your will.

That... Isn’t true tho. Polar bears in Minecraft are a neutral mob. They won’t attack you, unless you get close to them or their offspring or if you hit them. And if they hit you they ain’t gonna scratch, they are dangerous if you upset them. They did the same thing with goats, wolves and now with goats too. They won’t attack you unless you get too close or you hit them. It’s the same in real life. In real life, bears, wolves, llamas and goats aren’t the monsters portrayed in classic tales. They are afraid of humans, and they won’t attack unless they feel in danger or if you piss them off. And that’s pretty much what Minecraft did.

I believe that update will occur, but not the way you guys want it to. Likely when (so sure that I'm not even saying "if") they do the biome overhaul update, it will just be updating the biomes that lost the previous votes and they need to clean the backlog. Because Minecraft is running off of Microsoft now, they don't take risks anymore. They do minor things rather than attempt to "wow" anyone. You can even see this idea put into their events. They no longer hold any more Minecons because they're unable to control the crowd and they have to worry about expectations. With Minecraft Live they have a studio audience that they can vet in. They have canned laughter and applause. They've blocked out all conversation about the next "big move" or update and don't plan on recognizing their mistakes (they can't directly address that the community is divided in the combat mechanics, and make it seem lighter than it needs to be) It's great to hope, but Minecraft's development has steered in another direction.

Just look up placoderm and you’ll see that they give off a fantasy vibe that might fit well with Minecraft. Dragos Niculescu some of what you said is completely false. Dolphins are some of the coolest mobs in Minecraft and they have multiple uses and are just general fun. Foxes are interesting and at least add variety. Polar bears and pandas are useless but they pretty much exist to go with a specific biome that is otherwise bland or pointless. Early Minecraft lacked much content so of course early updates were big things. Making the game free is pointless because it’s really cheap for what you get from it. 20 dollars for hundreds of hours of content, access to servers and multiplayer, access to any mod, etc. Also I don’t get your point with mods. Minecraft has been moddable since before creative mode was a thing. Minecraft even added things like horses from the Mo’ Creatures mod and worked with the mod creator to add them. Biomes currently stand as copied and pasted landscapes with different colored trees, grass, and water. Maybe a couple mobs and plants serving no real purpose apart from ambiance thrown in. Take the Oak and Birch, for instance, same textures, same plants, just different colored woods, and leaves. The Mobs like pandas, turtles, bats, foxes, squids, along with a few more, have been added to the game with no real purpose apart from ambiance and maybe a helmet. I wish biomes had actually different trees, new textures, unique mobs with purpose, and some new generation. Most miss when the game had stuff you didn't know, new things to expect, but we've come to realize that finding that feeling now is difficult cause large portions are the same. The seas of 1.13, and the villages of 1.14 are what I am talking about, new generation, features, textures/colors, mobs, new playstyles, etc. are all awesome! I still come by new things down below that I am interested in. Although the game may be infinite, what's the point when there is nothing to expect? (I love the game, by the way, I just wanted to give some criticism on the aspect I think it's lacking.)

Oak and birch give color to the world, and are from the Beta. Squid is from one of the earliest Beta snapshots And was the only way to get black dye for a long time. Foxes are useful for farming red berries. Spruce, Oak and Birch provide these different trees and textures that you want. It sounds like you both want more ambience and are piffed about the things that do bring ambience aren't unique enough.

There's another big factor, they want to fit these features to a specific update. Campfires were used as decoration of the villages in 1.14, mountains and goats are tied to 1.17, etc. It's fine that they want to do this, waiting for each feature's turn... but should players really be the ones to affect that? I do agree that there's a lot of missed potential, and I also agree that they seem to pick animals to add based on educational value instead of entertainment (although Llama's don't seem to do either of those things and I have no idea why they added them), but I disagree that they shouldn't add real life animals. In fact, to me, the world still seems too empty and not atmospheric enough and adding real-life animals seems like a good way to fix that. But the problem is that they're adding the wrong animals. We need more common ones! Instead of polar bears and panda's, we need brown and black bears. And bees are alright, but we really need more birds - small ones that actually fly and tweet instead of hopping and making mob noises. Many different kinds, including land/water fowl like ducks and geese! Birds that actually fly and nest in the world would make it much more immersive.

They need unique mechanics or drops that actually do something Sheeps give wool wich is really useful, wolves serve as combat allies, cows provide milk wich cures status effects and leather wich is useful for a variety of things, horses work as vehicles on the other hand we have polar bears who drop nothing nor help you in any way, foxes who steal stuff and nothing else, turtles who can allow you to skip the water breathing enchantment entirely actively hurting other content and rabbits who are pretty much land bats with drops so pitiful that makes poisonous potatoes look good To Faceless, the parrot alerts of what mobs are nearby, it has helped me get ender pearls in the early game a lot

Well, you could say you ate your words! The swamps now feature a genuinely fun mob, and mangrove biomes themselves are chock-full of new mangrove blocks, mud, mud bricks, and more. They even branch out into renewable clay, and chest boats help with dispersing items into hoppers evenly. And trying to play minecraft without those new mountains is impossible for a good majority of people. They're just too good- Let's hope that with the other biomes, and with future votes and updates, the biomes left to tackle become so good that I cant see myself playing without termites, palm trees, tumbleweeds and more.

This is a late reply but although I think this is a great update a lot of people were expecting more. They shouldn’t have called it the wild update if they were just updating the swamps. I know they added the deep dark and the warden but they should just have called it the swamp update. Since they added both the mangrove swamp and the deep dark biomes my prediction is that they will update two biomes per update so hopefully the updates will come soon. I also wonder if termites will eat your Mine craft house if so I don’t want them.

Oh, you mean the "wild" update, the one that promised a unique identity to every biome yet didn´t touch more than two, one of which had been delayed for 2 updates prior, the swamps are exactly the same since the day they were added but now with frogs which feel more like just a meme, the mangrove biome which is basically just like the roofed forest or the savanna: pick a sappling and leave, there´s not much more to it even though it was the perfect opportunity to add swamp villages or some new small strucure, but there´s just mud which you can make anywhere with dirt and a bottle of water, and chest boats which... if I can alrady put a donkey with a chest on a boat which doesn´t pop off my items when I take it to ground, why would I get a chest boat? and the thing about dispersing into hoppers is pretty much something for technical minecraft which accidentally just made the allays a little more useless since they´re only useful to move items but they only work consistently when riding a minecart just like the chest boat... And don´t get me started with the cut off features I just hope votes stop happening since they don´t add much to the game and the division they make on the community is not worth it, i rather letting them take their time with an update and not with pressure of due-date because "the community" (0.01%) voted for this or that

Mojang has a bandaid. Instead of ripping the whole thing off and revealing tons of content, they slowly take off the bandaid to "not bombard you." Personally I love being bombarded with content if its fun. I think content is the wrong word to use. I think fundamentally, Minecraft is the true sandbox game and what makes a sandbox game is its systemic features. Players make their own content, but it is built on top of the systems put in place in the game. The update aquatic was actually very much a systemic update. It added water logged blocks, introduced new ways to travel and interact in water (improved swimming, bubble columns, dolphins grace, conduits, turtle helmets, tridents) and when introducing the new biomes, gave the additions interesting mechanics (blue ice, coral). I don't think the update was perfect and some of the introductions were more on the content side than the systemic side (they could have done more with turtles and dolphins) but it was good overall. I think that some of the suggested biome updates are very heavily skewed to the content side. I do think that what they have done with Bees is quite good though, if they added this level of systemic changes they added with bees with every mob, I think it would be very interesting.

Yes! More systematic changes are what this game needs. New blocks are cool for building, but they don't change the game play. However, systematic features are far more difficult to achieve because Minecraft is based on multiple completely different aspects, all of which must interact in a balanced manner: Exploration, creativity (mainly building), survival and PvP. New content can easily help one style of playing while not touching the others (see the above example with new blocks), but systematic updates may benefit some players while harming others. However, I'm not saying that Mojang should go the easy route, since if done right, systematic updates are MUCH better. I'm just saying that it has some difficulty to it which e.g.modders don't have because players choose the mods they use freely.

that's only really somewhat true, though. They do occasionally have big updates that overhaul large areas of the game (at this point, being the aquatic and caves & cliffs), but even still, the overworld biomes remain largely untouched and barren, despite the fact that we spend like 90% of our time in them. Mojang has shown that they're capable of having large scale changes and additions (even if they take forever like the caves and cliffs update), yet they refuse to do it for the biomes.

Polar Bears: Pointless. Llamas: Mountains actually needed these and they're sorta useful. Parrots: Pirate Roleplay and dance dance revolution purposes. Dolphins: Sealife that isn't a fish and they lead you to sunken ships. Turtles: Adorable and Turtle Shell helmets are hella useful cause Aquatic Update. Fish: I mean... this just makes sense to put in the game. Cats: I actually do not like this, these things are why I can't tame an Ocelot anymore. Pandas: New source of slimeballs and adorable. If I were to take a guess I think the main problem is how ''professional'' Mojang is trying to be. Minecraft's iconic mob was added because of a mistake and the game dev going: You know what ? Sure why not. Mojang needs to be way more ambitious than they are right now, they need to surprise us and astound us. If the majority doesn't like a big change they make, then they have no obligations to keep it in the game. Scrapping content is normal. But ever since the phantom's release I get the feeling Mojang feels like they CANNOT remove a feature they've added into the game no matter how many people dislikes it and explains how its a bad thing for the game. But that shouldn't be the case??? Mojang should be more ambitious and get out of their comfort zone, all while keeping in mind that features disliked by alot of people can be removed with no consequences.

Yeah phantoms are annoying but I think they are an excellent addition to minecraft. They are not another real world animal, and add to gameplay by adding a flying hostile mob to fight and making sleeping and smite more important. They have a unique drop that actually has uses and have different spawn mechanics to other mobs. I personally think that being so open with the community and giving them some sort of control over future updates is great, but the wait in-between these big updates feels a bit weird compared to the complete surprise updates that don't take another year to be actually released. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have them take their time and focus on making the updates good and not "rushed", but over the last couple of years Minecraft has started to feel more and more "empty". There's still plenty to do in Minecraft, for new and old players, but I feel like they shouldn't tease the community with new content that is supposed to be released so far down the line.

I see the Nether as one of the largest, oldest and most untouched biomes in the game. 1.16 will do to the nether what 1.13 did to oceans and we'll ask ourselves how we were all ok with the endless expanse of lava with the occasional fortress interspersed to break the monotony. We'll be getting new structures, new biomes, new mobs, new blocks, new mechanics and new items which will make the nether much more than it's original purpose of 'the fast travel place.' These new updates are all proving that Mojang wants to drastically update and upgrade the game to match its new popularity.

Turtles do have the scute that they drop when they grow up which can make a turtle shell [can be used as a helmet or for a potion.

Mojang have said that they're trying to rework all the game code, making it easier to develop for, making it more streamlined etc. I'm hoping that that will make development internally a lot faster. And of course increasing parity will mean things don't have to be greenlit by two different development teams. I don't mind having a slightly extended development time for the next couple of years if it means reworking and optimising the entire system, making it more playable, easier to run on servers, easier to mod, easier to develop for and so on

You're not missing much. They're cute, yeah, but none of their behaviors are particularly useful. You can... build a berry farm? Except berries aren't very useful. Technically you can use the fox to make a better chicken farm, but it's finicky and prone to loosing the sword, feeding all the chicken to the fox. As is, they haven't changed much.

Well we now know part of the slow down post Update Aquatic and part of the slowness in general has been technical in nature to get the code base ready for the now possible string of major update we are seeing now. No one expected another huge update right on the heels of the Nether update but here we are all waiting for the Caves and Cliffs update that just what they have all ready shown is going to be a massive overhaul of the game in many respects.
