All this crap at the start about him wanting to show why he didn't believe Judaism or Islam....is completely irrelevant. We don't need to know why he doesn't believe something else, we just need to know why he believes what he DOES believe. Also all the stuff about the courtroom....and Eric's totally pointless questions....are just another distraction. It was totally painful to have to listen to....and sure, Eric may have been having fun with it, but no one else was. The hosts should have cut through all that nonsense and pinned Dave Down on what he DOES believe and WHY, without any of the extraneous drivel.

Dont you have schools in the states or what? Seriously.
@schlaufuchs5525 жыл бұрын
We do, but our school system is a) decentralized and b) largely deemphasizes critical thinking, and, outside basic physical and chemical principles, largely seeks to hand down information from authority to memorize. In that respect it’s understandable to see so many Americans develop into adulthood an epistemological skepticism towards authoritarian knowledge bases. Our schools outside university-level education doesn’t teach us why we know what we know about fossils, how they form, how we can have strong certainty about our dating methodologies, and why they present really strong evidence for evolution, or even cladistic organizational systems and why those present even stronger evidence for evolution. But rather they merely tell us there are bones and evolution is true, memorize these facts. Given that the critical thinking skills people need to think deeply about evidence and epistemology until you get to the university, from which poorer people are precluded, all ordinary people in this country are two authoritarian pronouncements, one which is deeply integrated into morality, history, culture, society, and eschatology, which everyone in your community intrinsically accepts as valid and reinforces in daily conversation and weekly sermon, and one that you only really encounter in the school system, which deeply touches on class divisions, which is atomized and particularised, offers no simple answers, and appears to be in direct conflict with the other epistemological authority. In this respect it’s no surprise why so many in this country have such a deep misunderstanding of evolution and it’s validity.

I want to go back to his original question: how do we know a bone or fossil is transitional? There are experts - paleoanthropologist and paleontologists who know the anatomy of both current and extinct species. They understand how bones (and other body parts) fit together to reconstruct creatures from their skeletal or fossil remains. They know what features are unique to different species. And they can identify when species have some things in common with more modern species, and some things in common with more ancient species. That is how they know it is a transitional species! How do they know what is more modern and what is more ancient? They can use radiometric dating and other dating techniques (both absolute and relative dating) to identify the approximate ages of fossils. And thus, they can determine what species are likely ancestors of later species. Additionally, knowing how evolution works, scientists can use their knowledge to determine what a likely transitional species should look like, then search the fossil record to see if anyone has found a fossil that fits the description. For example, scientists could identify what features a transitional fossil between reptiles and mammals should have, then look to see that we have, in fact, found fossil of species that fit that expected transitional form. The same can be done for identifying the likely common ancestor of two modern species in the fossil record. Of course, without DNA testing there is no way to know if you have identified the actual transitional species or just a close relative of the transitional species. It is possible that every hominid species we have unearthed is not a direct ancestor of humans, but a cousin of our actual ancestor. And there are lots of examples where bones/fossils have been misidentified or put together incorrectly. So, it is not perfect, and no scientist would claim to know with absolute certainty.

What really gets me going is when callers come with demands to explain the biggest of big fields of study --:explain everything to me about physics, paleontology, biology, astronomy, etc., and in a couple minutes flat. I dunno, go to school for a few years. If you can't do that, go to the websites they keep suggesting you look at and actually read them. Follow the links. But no, they want to be told exactly once to think in the simplest possible terms. Not unlike what they get at a place they may attend once a week.
@theosamma3a604 жыл бұрын
I see a pattern emerging here. So many of these callers are more focused on trying to make an argument rather than discussing the argument itself. They set off being so convinced that their argument as a whole is already valid instead of exploring the veracity and validity of the premises.
