Just because a skate skiing drill is popular and in widespread use, doesn't mean it's teaching you the skills you need to learn to skate ski well.

No, I do not think that those drills hurt your technic providing that you understand their purpose which is to help developing your balance on one ski. Those drills are to be used only when you see that the skier does not glide at all or loose balance often when they glide on one ski. It is to make them realize that they constantly loose balance and that dictate the way they ski. Acquiring more balance on one ski allows you to ski much faster as it is so hard to keep a good balance while skiing dynamically and those drills are building blocks to bring you there. They are only drills nothing more. You have to ski to be better at skiing using drills can help the learning process but it has it’s limitation. After a drill you have to ski normally. I hope that I fully answer your question. 😁😁😁 Here is a good question for you. Is Olivia doing well those drills because she is a good skier or a good skier because she does well those drills? I think she is a good skier to start with which mean that often those drills illustrate particular problems to work on. If you do not have the problem you are wasting your time doing those particular drills you may as well ski normally.

These drills are for one basic (main) thing: moving pelvis over the support point. Without it one can't think of other technical aspecs. That's the reason we do it first. If we are informed what a drill is targeting there's no harm.

I agree with the central point of this video as well as some of the challenges below. All of our needs change as our capability changes. The commentators point about specificity is a gigantic concept easily overlooked. Nordic ski lab rocks!

Thanks Kim. Very well explained and demonstrated. I think the criticism of the gliding drills is valid!

Super useful and well done! We have friends who showed us the stand-up tall glide drill to try to help us learn last year. We have so much to learn, we don't have time (or energy!) to unlearn! 😊

Thank you I was about to figure this out as well since I tried "sitting back" while roller skiing which worked better. Now it seems very obvious.

Two useful points that make good sense. Practice balanse in a lower body position will teach you to activate your leg muscles while gliding but yet be relaxed before the onset of the leg push. For many it requires a lot of hard work to gain the strength and balanse to find this sweet spot. Second, the timing of the arm swing will come more naturally as you rise up after leg push and transition into the next cycle. It'll be easier to avoid holding your arms tall in front of you too long thus losing the momentum of a forward fall onto the poles. I like how you draw the connection between the body position in the glide phase and its influence on the overall dynamic and timing of work to be done throughout a cycle. Good thinking. As a trainer it provides language and cues to communicate better with young skiers eager to develop their skills.

Great point actually… We did many of these kinds of drills 10-15 years ago, and I have to admit the only side effect was losing your nice flow of movements. And it's bad to see even today kids doing same stuff.

Is there video that shows the drop step turn for making sharp turns? Not just a step turn, but with a dropped leg.
