Timing in One Skate (🇺🇸 V2 Skate) is a big topic. Timing is a holistic quality of your technique, but it can be helpful to look at timing during different parts of the stride cycle. In this video we look at timing during the recovery phase of One Skate.
If you want to improve your skate skiing, Nordic Ski Lab has several detailed videos on the topic of One Skate timing, along with practical drills to improve this important aspect of your technique.

Having the expert skier in color and the less-skilled in black and white to contrast the two was brilliant!

Trivia: In Finland we call that one skate technique "Wassberg" and 2 skate "Mogren"; names of famous skiers back in their day.

Wow, this is a mind blowing video. I hadn’t grasped this complexity and subtlety in timing. Thanks - will try tomorrow !

I’ve found this is another issue that stems from the drill from your last video (where you exaggerate the time riding the gliding ski). This also leads to not getting enough forward lean (see the comparison around 5:00). One thing I’ve found helpful is to throw your hands back at the end of the double poling motion, then for whatever reason that results in your poles & your recovering ski returning to the snow about at the correct time. Fantastic video as usual, Nordic Ski Lab!

Having raced 4 Birkies and many shorter Loppet my open skate/V2 across fields and meadows have always struggled particularly over a long distance such as the Birkie. My V1 is much better to climb but my open skate v2 has always been weak and slow and not fluid. I think a lot of it came down to timing as you have stated. Excellent instructional videos - Chapeau !

Timing is important, but this video deals more with positions than timing. A standard timing for One Skate is to execute it in 6/8 time with strides on beats 1 and 4, and pole plants on 3 and 6, like the skier at 1:03 does.

Thank you! Finally someone talks real rhythm, not just 'timing'. If it swings, it glides

Never though about it that way even though I am a musician and skier... Not sure how helpful it would be for athletes who don't know their time signatures though.

For non-musicians the 1 and 4 on 6/8 timing is the bass line in most waltzes. One-2-3-Four-5-6, One-2-3-Four-5-6

Also, I push off on my ski edge the same time I plant my poles. Is that correct? It seems logical to me because it's all one big push with my arms and leg then I glide on the other ski
@Magnus--Johansson

@@whocares_bear -- You should push with one leg and both arms at the same time, but for that to be a fluent rythmic movement you shall plant your poles one beat before the ski.

The largest differences I notice between the “good” vs “bad” videos are actually faster tempo in the “good” , a more athletic stance, and more dynamic push with both upper and lower body. Timing differences do not stand out as much. Maybe make another set of “bad” timing videos with the tempo, stance, and push the same to make it easier to spot the timing problem.

Great video. Maybe fix the link in the description? Other typos I can ignore, but this one does prevent me from going to the site. Or is it a security trick so that bots don't get there?

Why does my left foot/ski (mostly front part of it) slip when I kick?
@NordicSkiLab
@NordicSkiLab 2 жыл бұрын
You need to drive more pressure into the ball of the foot, particularly at the first metatarsal, during the push.

The person in the colored view is putting a lot more effort into her 1 skate than the non colored view, when she goes from the flexed position to the standing start position. There is a lot of body movement there and She's doing a lot of work. Sure she will be fast, but at what cost? The person in the non colored version isn't bobbing up and down as much, nor is her push-off as strong. In this years American Birkenbeiner, the elite female group didn't exhibit the body movements of the person in the colored view here. For me the pushing off requires more strength than the V-1, and the constant bobbing up and down (going from flexed to standing/start position) is what I find tiring and what raises my heart rate. The winning male of this years Birkebeiner exhibited a lot of body movement and quite powerful push-offs (flexed to start position) even on uphills, for most of the event until he had 10k or less to go. Also in this video the people are on a downhill slant. The man is very fluid.
