The swan show was sooo problamatic. Theres an episode where in the reveal the woman started crying and yelling things like "what have you done to me", clearly upset about her look. And the producers asked her to record that scene again but this time be "happy" about her transformation. Also it was said that the amount of time given was not realistic at all for all the stuff they had done and recovery needed.

I’ve never watched 90 Day Fiancé but my (now) husband and I were actually going through the process of a fiancé visa when the show was starting to get popular. We had people kinda laughing and asking if we had ever met before. I even had someone ask me if we were going to be on the show. It was really annoying and kind of upsetting because it was a long and trying process and this show was causing people to make assumptions about our relationship. It felt like this show was just handing out these visas to people who weren’t serious about it when we went through years of long distance before our visa application even got accepted. I don’t know if it’s assumed that you have to get a lawyer but I think a lot of folks going through it don’t to save money (we didn’t). It all eventually worked out and we’ve been happily married for 3 1/2 years now, but I don’t think I’ll ever watch the show since it sounds like it sensationalizes a process that was a very stressful time of our lives. Anyways, just thought it might be an interesting perspective from someone who actually went through the fiancé visa process since y’all briefly talked on that.

I feel so bad for all of you going through this. One of the KZbinrs I watch went through the process to have her husband come from England to the US. The amount of times she had to go back and forth and the waiting time to get the documents. It seems so stressful. I understand why it’s a long process, because you have people like this on these shows that don’t take it seriously. They want to make sure you’re serious about the relationship and your not trying to do something illegal but good grief.

But always watching you and your podcasts inspired me because you value education just as much as I do! And I’m finally in a financial position to go to school! My family and those around me do not value education. So the only person I know that will always support me (even though you don’t know me personally) is you! i know this isn’t what this episode is about lol but the plastic surgery talk made me think about something i read once. it basically said we can’t consider cosmetic surgery/filler just a woman’s choice because, if not for the beauty standard, how do we know they would not have chosen otherwise for themselves. i absolutely botched that quote lol it was worded better when i read it but it really hit me when i read it.
@HeyThereErica
@HeyThereErica Жыл бұрын
Agreed! Everyone markets it as a feminist choice, but it's a farce. I love that plastic surgery is an option for people that need it (victims of burns, accidents, etc) to look like their "normal" selves, but yeah, it's sad that we are in this cycle of everyone changing their bodies just to look like everyone else :/

And taking into consideration that the beauty standard is set by exploitative companies and people who want to make money out of it(kardashians for example), saying “it’s my body my choice” dosent fully address the problem. Because are you really free to make your choice? When not making that choice has terrible consequences for you societally?
@kpwxx
@kpwxx Жыл бұрын
This is quite a big talking point for some branches of radical feminism, and while I understand the basis of the argument, I definitely don't agree. The thing is, if you follow this through, it can be applied to a lot of things - can women really consent to sex work? Can they consent to sex at all, when there is so much pressure on them to do it? And also verging into transphobic ideas too (though many who believe this principle are not transphobic of course, and the same goes for not everyone carrying the idea forward to all consent!) Ultimately it feels a bit like taking away agency when someone says 'can you *really* consent though?' I think it's definitely an important thing to consider. We should always be looking at the pressures put on people to conform to arbitrary societal standards, and consider any choices in that context, because we can't separate the two. Like Teal blue mentioned, if there are negative consequences of not conforming it does make defining true choice difficult (though, that could be extended to a lot of things in life really). And everyone should be encouraged to fully examine the reasons why they want to do something like get plastic surgery. But I don't like the idea of more blanketly saying that it's not a real choice - because the most important thing to me is that we listen to what people themselves have to say. ------ On the topic of the show, I think the problem is not that they're having plastic surgery, the problem is the overall vibe of the show promoting people's natural appearance as bad and promoting plastic surgery as a primary or even necessary way to feel good about your appearance. It's all about the context of a show like that and what it means, when you think about the pressures that people face and the imagery they see. A good example of a show that I've caught parts of which seemed to approach the topic well was Plastic Surgery Undressed, where they discuss pros and cons, risks and rewards of surgery, in an open and non-judgemental way.
@agzfd
@agzfd Жыл бұрын
@@kpwxx Yes, but we could also turn it the other way: if we should always avoid this "taking away agency" thing, we could say that someone staying in an abusive relationship is making a true free choice. We could argue that people can't really be pressured into sex, or into killing themselves. We could argue about kids being able to consent, and so on. There is no easy answer, but we have to take a stance, and, personally, I can't just be ok with people seriously risking their health for the cosmetic reasons some millionaire companies have decided to impose.

This would be a great series. Subsequent episodes could focus on describing real or fake shows from a particular genre: sitcoms, dramas, science fiction, etc. Another idea would be to describe specific popular episodes and provide multiple choice as to what series. For example is a description of an episode from Gray’s Anatomy, ER, Scrubs or Chicago Med.

As someone who recently watched The Swan for the first time fairly recently due to another youtuber - the show was *incredibly* exploitative and pretty emotionally and psychologically abusive to the women on the show. A few people have spoken about it and some have written books about their experience. Also, a lot of the "professionals" on the show are either unlicensed due to fraudulent activity (the dentist being a big one) or have been exposed in various ways. So to Ben's comment, while the landscape for cosmetic procedures has changed, The Swan is actually looked on less favorably now than it was when it was aired. There's a lot of discourse about that show (or there was not that long ago) on social media, and none of it was positive.

i understand what ben was trying to say about plastic surgery! at the end of the day, plastic surgery exists because of beauty standards, and, even though these surgeries have become more "acceptable", they still are full of those standards that some women have tried to destroy. also, since we are exposed to this standards from a very young age on, almost, every type of media, we will never know if these women who get cosmetic surgeries are doing it for themselves or bc they want to be part of those standards. I think it's different because the contestants on 'The Swan' or whatever were being publicly judged all against each other in a competition. Especially in the earlier days of reality TV where there was even less than the tiny scraps of aftercare they have now. Having plastic surgery done or sharing your own curated photographs isn't the same as the show. You could say the same of a lot of reality TV -the editing and lack of agency regarding how they're presented.

And most/many of the things people get offended at are justified. Average people in activist/leftist/feminist circles people value kindness, respect and openness to new ideas. An average person isn’t going around yelling at people for accidentally using an outdated term, a homophonic/racist/etc word, etc if they had no idea and are open to learning, they might respectfully correct them and move on if anything.

I remember feeling jealous of their transformations, at 13. Now I realize how terrible that experience could have been for many of the women involved.

There was a similar show in Germany, that even said the contestants were ugly before. And I remember my girlfriends having similar reactions. I wasn’t allowed to watch it 😅 my mother was always very protective in regard to tv shows with beauty standards.

Speaking of Love Island, I think the problem that's becoming increasingly apparent with that show is the way people who were on it are viewed & treated after doing it. There's been 3 or 4 people who were on the show in some capacity that have taken their own lives in just the last few years, which definitely seems to be a serious problem

Just to defend love island among the other reality shows: it has a lot of background info that is sad and scary to realize how intense the "rules" can affect the contestants. Please research this show and you'll see why even though their accents and characters are entertaining, they did live through some harsh realities. Great episode though!

nooo Ben you’re absolutely right!! Just because women feel more “involved” in the decision to get plastic surgery doesn’t mean it’s any less sad or gross! And how do we even know if it’s actually our decision on changing our bodies if we’re constantly being brainwashed into thinking there’s something wrong with them? In my personal opinion, It’s not actually our decision in the first place. All of my current insecurities were never insecurities before until I saw commercials or social media say there was something wrong with them and I needed to get them fixed. All of our insecurities are created from standards, not from us ourselves.

Loved this! I think that if you do this again, the person guessing should have to guess the name of the show, real OR fake. That way if Ben realized that Cristine's overly detailed crime stats based reality TV show is fake, he still has to listen to details to guess what she named it.

I'm technically Gen Z, and I think Seinfeld is very funny. Jerry Seinfeld did do a lot of observational humor about how men acted in situations vs women. It's easy to feel like it's sexist, but I think a lot of the things he said were honest observations about men and women acting differently because of how we are socialized and never judgments or misogyny. Obviously, the world is changing so when the observations are no longer accurate, they become less funny. The stand up segments in the episodes show their age in a way that the episode's situational humor doesn't. Still a funny show!

The thing about eating the black and white cookie, Elaine, is you want to get some black and some white in each bite. Nothing mixes better than vanilla and chocolate. And yet somehow racial harmony eludes us. If people would only look to the cookie all our problems would be solved.

Good idea for an episode. Was hoping naked attraction would make the list!! Surprised that last one was a show as it's so unethical - as if reality TV shows aren't unethical enough. There are quite a few book series where there is a cat that helps solve a mystery.
@richardvanderlaak826

That show about a detective with the cat really sounds familiair to the REAL show of Kommisar Rex, which was very popular in not-english speaking Europe. Rex was a dog (German shepherd), and solved real crimes alongside a detective, while also stealing his sandwiches. It was produced for 10 seasons in Germany/Austria, after which several seasons were produced in Italy

I am from Russia and I loved Rex as a child! It was also very popular here and I remember coming home from school to watch cartoons and later Rex. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and i was kinda surprised by the nudity and the seriousness of murders but all children loved it lol. But to be fair, a cat wouldn't be able to do all the tricks and stunts the dog did in the show, it would be very useless comparing to a canine unit but cute and funny for a mini-series

@@alenunya Oh yes! I completely get what you mean. I watched every episode with my parents, where a lot of themes covered where not suitable for children haha. It was lovely (and totally are with you on the behavior of Rex versus a cat, that dog prevented many detectives from being harmed, I don't know whether a cat would do that lol)
