Journey will always be one of the best bands out there, and they were definitely at their best with 'The Voice' Steve Perry singing. The emotion they capture in their music is always top notch, and you could always count on Steve to really heighten that emotion and take it to the next level. Even now, with his voice having aged some 40+ years since this concert... He is still a joy to listen to. His Christmas song album "The Season" from 2 to 3 years ago is one of my favorites to listen to. The man is still able to put emotion and feeling into a song like few others can. Thanks to you both for this reaction!!

An amazing voice and he was a great ballad singer. He could sing as well live as in the studio. They had so many hits in the 80s and led the way.

One of the very 1st power ballads. Jonathan played the idea for Steve, who finished it with him. Neal wanted to leave it off the album and refused to play it in concert because there was no great guitar solo. But the 1st time they played it it brought the house down...and brought women to the concerts. Kudos to Steve for masterful performance. For a vocalist,it is very easy to let the adrenaline get to you and lose your pitch...but never Steve.

This song came out 2years before my daughter was born and is a favorite of mine. Fast forward 13years later I was driving my daughter and 2 of her friends somewhere when this song came on the radio and to my surprise all 3 are singing it word for word, fast forward my 6year old granddaughter did the same. It is a timeless song.

You might love their ballad called "When you love a woman" too. It was later in their career and was the last album they did together as a band. They broke up shortly after. Journey went on to hire new lead singers, while Steve basically disappeared from the music scene for decades.

A bit of trivia about this song: It was written by Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist, while he was still with the band The Babys. He tried to get John Waite, leader of The Babys, to let them record and perform it, but John Waite said it was too syrupy and refused it. Luckily, The Babys opened for Journey on tour and when Gregg Rolie (Journey's then keyboardist) decided to leave, they asked Jon Cain to join Journey. He played the song for Steve Perry and he loved it. It became Journey's highest charting single at #2 on the Billboard singles chart. Incidentally, The Babys never had a song chart that high.
@rare_wulf93588 ай бұрын
Interesting facts about Jonathan Cain you mentioned 😊, just one of many things that are missing in today’s music, the social connections, in how bands got started, like how Daryl Hall and John Oates came together both met in a club playing for different bands but both were being kicked out of there apartments by their roommates and decided to become roommates together. The rest is history 😊, or how the back up road musicians for Linda Ronstatd decided to form their own band and thus the Eagles 🦅 were born😊, but am glad Daryl got screed by his own band mates. We would never would have had that great music come together by John & Oates 😊. I heard he was living with 2 band members but another band member broke up with his girlfriend so they told (Darly or was it John)? I forgot but anyway, he needed to leave the apartment and find another place to live, so that the other band member can take his place to live in the apartment. Both John & Oates were not appreciated in their bands and were relegated to just taking orders and just do what your told and don’t bother with any creativity in making music 🎶

Chock full of great musicians and possibly the best singer rock n roll has ever known, it was hard not to like them. They were a musicians man band. React to "Faithfully" (1983), which has often been called the best power ballad ever written. And yes, they were the best at power ballads. I believe "Open Arms" was the first song to be deemed a "power ballad", though it certainly wasn't the first power ballad recorded. Because Journey's power ballads were so popular, the general public started calling them a power ballad band, which is so wrong. This band played so many styles! (How many times did I say "power ballad" just now??)

Journey is one of those very rare bands who can use a live performance for an official music video. I used to have their "greatest hits live" on cassette. Imo, their live performances are just as good, if not better, than the studio versions. Steve Perry was a phenom in their peak Era. And nobody ever gives the guitar player enough credit. He plays all the solos perfectly every time.

It's great that you guys enjoy this amazing concert, but I would recommend you don't judge the song specifically from a live performance. The studio version is very clear and I always feel the first listen to any song should be the one that made it famous and that everyone knows and hears over and over -- and that hit it big on the charts. At the very least, once you've heard it live please familiarize yourself with the studio version by listening to it a few times (and possibly w/lyrics too).
