Today we're having a look at some new music by a new band seeing a lot people complain that there's nothing new and good around right now. The Last Dinner Party have taken the industry by storm right now after they released their debut single "Nothing Matters". However, already they are receiving backlash and skepticism with folks accusing them of being "industry plants" or "nepo babies". Who cares? What do you think of this song? Is this a band who knows how to write a good song drawing from a variety of strong influences? Tell me in the comments.

It is quite literally only female acts that get that "Industry Plant" label. Haim, Wet Leg, Let's Eat Grandma...these lot. All these bands can really play, really write songs. What does the term even mean? I don't think most people even understand how a new act with a major label works. You sign a band, then couple them with a good producer who works with them to produce something polished.

They aren't getting negative press in the slightest. Quite the opposite, and that is what rubbed some people the wrong way. The press has been unanimously positive and seemingly for nothing, so people got sceptical. Despite the praise, press has had a negative effect because they constantly talk about that reputation. 90% of the conversation hasn't been about the band or their music. It's been about their exposure. Their debut album came out today, and every review says things like "people have accused them of not being deserving of their status, but with this album they prove they deserve the praise". Can no one just talk about how good or bad the songs are?

Saw them tonight opening for First Aid Kit. One of the greatest joys in life is an opening band that's as good, or better, than the band you've gone to see. TLDP had some of the best stage presence I've seen in ages. People are always suspicious of anyone that good, that talented and that attractive. Especially if it's women. The world is one step forward two steps back. The Carpenters were accused of writing songs that people liked, what a fucking crime.

I definitely see the ABBA and Kate comparisons. There's such a nostalgic vibe. The Industry Plant complaint is so hilarious. Like every band is morally obliged to struggle undiscovered and unsigned until they break up in a cloud of substance abuse and tabloid headlines, instead of actually, you know, succeeding. And yes, it is definitely because they're female. Because in the eyes of certain people, there's no way attractive young women can actually be good at anything.

They're talented, write bangers, are artistically saying something and are HOTT .....can't help but think if they were less attractive and/or just stood in front of a camera singing then they wouldn't be getting so much flack!

I first saw them over a year ago on the criminally small KZbin channel of Lou Smith. He's a filmmaker from South London that posts all of these amazing live rock shows from really small venues in his area for the last 5+ years. I originally stumbled across his channel seeing a Black Country, New Road show with a handful of views from a tiny venue, but impeccably shot for a live set. I started exploring the rest of his videos and the other acts, most of which I'd never hear of again since I'm halfway across the world and many of these are live shows with less than 50 to 100 people in the audience. That's where I first saw The Last Dinner Party well over a year ago, when they were just The Dinner Party. I think the first show I watched had to have less than 50 people there. Industry plants aren't playing shows to 50 people night after night in tiny dive clubs to cut their teeth. You could tell then they had something special. Not sure if it is all completely organic, but it doesn't seem like this great band was handed anything. You could hear the changes made to songs over subsequent shows, them playing new material early on in a song's incarnation, and still getting a feel for all of it. Just like any other band. I can only find 2 major differences of why this band is getting these accusations and nonsense thrown their way: 1. they are all beautiful, talented, amazing women and a great deal of people are intimidated by that, which is a real shame and 2. that they are loads better than almost any other new band I've heard in quite a while in all the ways that matter. They have stage presence, you can tell they are having fun, they interact with the audience, they have amazing talent, and they've found the right formula to focus all of those things to make really compelling earworms that are hard to take off repeat. It just seems like jealousy and some very insecure men/boys that are generating this baseless chatter. At the end of the day they are making amazing music and looking like they are having fun doing it, what's not to love?

@@Bopflix YES! He deserves all the respect and views possible. He really manages to document so much of a scene that someone like me, from down south in the US, would never get the opportunity to see and hear. He manages to do amazing work behind the camera and with the audio, which are both so very, very difficult in trying to capture live performances of smaller acts in even smaller venues. It is so rare that one of his videos doesn't look and sound so good that you don't even think about it. The problems of filming live shows just melt away and you just get to enjoy the performance. He has a real skill and it shows. I wish we could clone him and send a Lou Smith to every major city with a thriving scene around the globe. Lou is just doing something that could be easy to overlook in terms of cultural importance. He's capturing a finite time that won't exist again. Imagine having a Lou Smith in New York in the late 70's, Seattle at the very end of the 80's and early 90's, Paris in early 2000's. He's capturing the real zeitgeist of the current British indie scene and I just can't believe more people haven't caught on and found his channel.

I liked The Darkness back when, but through this podcast, I have an entirely new appreciation of not only The Darkness, but of you as a human being. I liked very much the song, and your final advice is the best ever..."enjoy the music for the music itself" I guess that women in music industry are always put on doubt by different things... Women have continually to prove that they are good musicians, if they play guitar, if they write songs, if they have success by her own merits...everything always reduce to superficial elements like if they dance, if they are gorgeous, if their boyfriend split with them... Did someone criticize you when you wrote songs about your feeling in "Easter is Cancelled"? In other hand, there are a kind of prejudice about hits. When a song comes with great success...in my opinion it is only because it reaches to a lot of people so is a good song... (Well not always, that's right) But not every hit must to be artificial.

From this video, I actually went and checked out their live performances. There seems to be videos of their early gigs when they were still called The Dinner Party and they seem to have paid their dues. From short 18 minute sets building up to around 45 mins, you also see them fine tuning, altering their perfomance little by little. I'd say they aren't really plants but just caught a really good break and was pushed by their label pretty hard to get the recognition and gigs they have now. Curious to hear how the produced versions of some of the songs they played live sound.

I got into The Last Dinner Party about the same time you uploaded this review, when the "up next" algorithm offered me "Sinner" on the back of "The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte"; and, yeah, I heard Russel Mael's vocal style straight away. From there, I immediately sought out "Nothing Matters" and all the live videos various folk have posted. Then the available material dried up for weeks: but, happily, they played Green Man the other week, so now I'm about to embark on the the videos folk have posted of that. On the other hand, I confess I've been avoiding watching this review because of the title. I had a nagging fear you might be one of the very folk putting that nonsense about. I should have had more faith in you :D. Just watched this and was delighted to hear you scotch that guff. Duly subscribed.

Have been playing this over and over, for a long time. I don’t care where they came from, Nothing Matters captivated me, it’s stunning. I’m always on the hunt for new music, being 42 and chronically stuck in the 90s and too aware of it. Like Wet Leg, they do have a timeless sound, I’m in love. Oh and those drums kicking in after the bridge and guitar solo… divine…

Thank you Justin for turning me onto this band. They're fantastic and from reading a few articles and comments on their vids, they built a following the best & 'realest' way - by putting on great shows, much like The Darkness. Hope they tour Canada soon.

I am with you on this they are Kinda great I think! I’m nobody though, but a music fan, I think that for the sake of the longevity of the music maybe avoid signing with anyone until they can find someone who will really get behind them idk anything about the industry but what I’ve read/heard. Who gives an actual f who they are related to where they came from honestly! They know what they’re doing I feel! Love the song love the name love everything lol

Nice honest review Justin. I got the Sparks flavors straight away and also Abba. They are also reported to be influenced by Bowie though I don't quite hear that in the music but maybe in the darkness of some of the lyrics. Though I believe I could teach em a thing or two regarding that department. :) Top band though. Sad that there's a but of jealousy toward the bad but also reassuring.

Justin, I love that you've introduced me to some brilliant music. Seeing The Chats in November cause of you. My only minor criticism about your videos is you stop the video too often, I'd love you to play the whole uninterrupted video at the end. Just to get the full feel, other than that keep riding. Cheers

as an end consumer, I dont care about the background of the artists if the song is good and I like it, thats all i care. i can find issues with anyone if I dig deep into their history. I just want to vibe and enjoy it. This is a great song and if they got help, great! Keep making awesome music.

First time hearing this song. I think I nodded and openly said yes to about everything you were saying about this band. Afterwards I looked to hear more from them. There is a lot of polish on this song. It was produced by James Ford, who has long ties to the Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine, and just worked with Depeche Mode. I feel his influence is definitely felt here. But nonetheless, and not caring if it's women or what ties they have (who cares about that noise) at the end of the day, the song is solid and I would like to hear more. Thanks for the ride sir...
