Thank you so much for this video! I literally just bought MR Coulee 25 Women's Desert Fox, and I'm super-excited to use it. I'm a new(er) hiker, and I'm training to hike Pike's Peak in September. I had great support in the store (shout-out to Mountain Chalet in Colorado Springs), and they helped me find the perfect fit for me. Your video showed me a couple of features I was unaware of and made me confident in my selection. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks!

I have the Coulee 25 L/XL and for being 6'-5 the pack works great as a day pack. Fits well for how big I am. At first I wasn't sure if i would like the big dump area for gear but since grown to like it and organize the way I want. Like separate kit for first aid, small fire kit, kit with a compass and trail maps. Plus extra room or snacks, jacket etc.

Excellent video and the most thorough review on these packs out there. Some months ago I bought the Coulee 25 and no matter what adjustments were made - and I tried both sizes, I could not get it to be comfortable. I always felt that plastic yoke/support sled never fit right. But then again, my 2 hiking buddies love theirs. Other than boots backpacks are the most subjective of all outdoor items. I really did want to like it because it is a well made pack and the online reviews are almost universally positive, but simply did not work for me.

Thank you so much for this great review. I always check your channel before getting a new pack. I’m looking into my second MR pack, an all rounder for travel (whenever I can be on an airplane again..) and for camping/hiking with my dog. I got the prizefighter as a Christmas gift to myself because I wasn’t sold yet on the look of the tri zip. Your in depth reviews and my time with the prizefighter has me sold on the Coulee! Especially because there’s a women’s strap version. I also wanted to ask, what kind of dog pack/harness/leash gear do you use? Is there a specific brand you like? You may not want to do a dog gear review so I wanted to ask.

A few things I would love to see on the coulee to take it to the next level maybe. As you've said lashing points on the bottom for extra gear but also the internal hydration sleeve to be more like that of the Mystery Ranch ASAP/GoRuck GR series and the carryology X mystery ranch crossover with the molle on the outside of the expandable/elasticated hydration sleeve to attach pouches having more organisation capabilities. Also the addition of internal zipper compartments on the sides panels like some of their other bags, would offer more organisation without adding a lot of bulk or extra weight. Finally, three rows of molle either side above the water bottle pockets like their ASAP pack to allow for lashing points or quick access pouches such as their RFAK med pouch when the pocket is not in use, whilst still not looking overtly tactical.

Great review and comparison. I use a Scree 32 for my smaller day hikes and a larger MR Pop Up 38 for longer trips where I need to carry more food/water. The build quality difference between the Pop Up 38 and the Scree is night and day. Does the Coulee 40 seem to be better made than the Scree?

Can the compression straps on the sides be unrolled for enough length to clip to the opposite side as on the Scree? This is the perfect size for work EDC, carry-on and minimalist weekenders- my only issue is the lack of pad attachment (I use CCF pads not air).

@gideonstactical Thank you for the video! I’m still torn between the MR Scree 32 and the Coulee 40. It’s going to be an all around pack. “Bugout bag/Get home bag” and also camping. I’ve been looking at many brands and sizes and have narrowed it down to these two. I just can’t seem to make a choice.

I really enjoy your pack videos, but one thing you never mention is methods for attaching bear vaults to the exterior of the packs. Packs used to have attachment points for putting bed rolls, and bear vaults on the top and bottom. I know it is heavy as hell, but for this purpose I actually really like my old large A.L.I.C.E LRRP. the duel compression straps on top will secure the bear can ( when I was in the ARMY, we used that as where to carry our thermal mat) and the underside of the frame has really solid points to run compression straps for the bed/shelter half roll.

Solid review. I picked up the 25 about two months ago on sale. I've had (have) a fair number of day/backpacking packs and am impressed with the Coulee. Material is a lot thicker than most. But it's also heavier. Not a super concern of mine for day hikes. As mentioned in this, the adjustability is really awesome. Offers a better chance of dialing in the fit compared to most other day packs. Also REALLY like the removable hip belt. It's more robust than you need for a warm weather, light load, day hike but when you're carrying some weight in the winter it's a great option to have. The shoulder harness is thick and padded and carries really well without the hipbelt. Enough lash points too and the compression straps are solid. The only thing I'm having a hard time getting used to is the zipper system. It's two hands to close the zippers and I'm not entirely sold on the panel loading option. Not sure it's beneficial for a day pack. The zipper has waterproofing material and it's a bit stiff. I hike most every day in the mountains where I live and it still isn't second nature. Zippers are big and solid though and I imagine it will loosen up over time. While I get how the front pockets need to be separated given the design, they are limiting to what you can get in there. I knew it would be a trade off but sticking a wet jacket in there to dry off isn't really an option like with a mesh front pocket. The upside is the mesh won't rip like it does with most. I personally wouldn't consider the 40 for trips. It's just too heavy but I imagine the panel loading feature is much more beneficial. But you can feel the durability and quality of the pack. Great colors too. I'm smelling a lot of years with this one. But Mystery Ranch? Throw us a bone with a key fob, huh? I hooked a biner inside the main pack but something inside the top pocket would be way better.

Great review, very in-depth. People unfamiliar with Mystery Ranch should know they are run by Dana Gleason, of Dana Design. This is his new company, and all of his packs are highly refined, and very comfortable, superb packs. As you note, Kelty, Mointainsmith, Gregory, all make good packs, but in my opinion the only packs that really compete with this are the Arc’teryx Aerios, and Osprey Talon (late 2020 design, not the older version). Buyers should take a peek at these, which have micro adjustments as well and excellent for multi-use. I work at a job where I wear a green vest, so trust me here. :-)

I bought the coulee 40L pack and have put a couple hundred miles on it and it is well worth the price if you do a lot of day hiking. If your doing 5 miles or less and not gaining more then 300 feet of elevation only day hiking in good weather than yeah this pack is overkill. However I live right by the appalachian trail (it’s only a 6 mile walk from my house) and in fall, winter and spring was day hiking 12 to 16 miles on one of my days off each week and this pack is perfect for that. If you think the coulee 40 is to large it’s really not if your a bigger guy (I’m over 6’1 long torso inseam is between 32 and 30) putting layers on and off plus carrying extra water for my saint bernard this pack was just the right size for what I needed. The one drawback of the 40 is if you want to do overnighters it’s in a weird spot it can work year round if you are just carrying items for yourself for one night but if you have to carry items for someone else or if it’s cold in the teens or lower for example you’ll want a larger bag even for one night. I got the terraframe 50 recently and wondering if the coulee 40 is going to be retired as a winter dayhiking bag with me just using the terraframe because with it’s over load ability it’s easy to do 2 to 3 nights with that bag so I might just use it for dayhiking since it’s only 10 liters larger.

I have the 25 and I took the waist belt off and never use it anyways. I don't think the pack is big enough to have a big load that requires a waist belt. The only time I could see maybe putting it on would be if I knew I was going to be doing a lot of rock scrambling and climbing, and want it secured better to my back. Thank you for your service. It’s American flag bandanna that I tied on my pack a year or two ago as more and more people started commenting that they view the American flag negatively. It’s my simple tribute to America and that I’m not afraid to love the flag and what it represents. Free for all people and the chance of a better life.

gideonstactical our own government has been undermining our soldiers and law enforcement all these years until Trump stepped into office and did right by us.

Are they made in the CCP? You want a real backpack made in the USA buy a MC Hale pack by far the best I've ever had.

I'm pretty sure it's made in the Philippines or Vietnam. There is a company named Seek Outside that makes excellent packs in the US. Mystery Ranch FAQs: Philippines and Vietnam Production: Why did you add a production facility in the Philippines and Vietnam? MYSTERY RANCH added these facilities because of the increased demand for our product. We needed the additional facilities to build for customers who don't require (Berry Compliant) US production and / or don't want to pay a premium price for products built in the U.S.A. With these additional offshore facilities, we are able to focus our domestic facilities on the Berry Compliant orders.

It would be nice if you were a little more transparent and up front in your videos. You typically say you purchased the product at the beginning of your videos, and then you say you got the product for free at the end of your videos. I will keep watching because for the most part your videos are good and I do learn from them, even bought some products from them. I just wish you handled the free versus purchased products better. Thanks.
