Where aikido fails most in an MMA style contest is in the aikidoist's belief that he can catch punches and then execute his techniques. But in an MMA style match it is very difficult to catch a punch. Where aikido style joint manipulations can be most profitably used is in the clinch. See Dan the Wolfman's videos on this. They are very useful.

Rokas Sensei, It's nice to see an update from you. I really enjoy watching your journey through your experiences. You spoke to me some time ago, and we share very similar goals in the martial arts, though we approach it from very opposite sides of the same coin so naturally I always enjoy seeing where your next step is. I actually posted a video on the whole "Modernizing traditional martial arts" topic a week ago to Reddit, though I imagine it got buried by now and I never cross posted it anywhere. You may find it interesting though and can find it on our channel if you're curious as I always enjoy and welcome others insight. Regardless, I'm looking forward to your next video with Nick. Definitely curious to see what he has in store for you.

is it sanitarily safe to have a dog where you rub your face when rolling and all the contact to the floor involved in practicing martial arts? Btw, great stuff

I suppose it all depends what you want out of a martial art.

AikidoSiauliai Well what I really like about you is that you are open minded and you’re really working your martial art to the limits, your aikido will become the best aikido, possible the Number 1 in the world. you and I are doing the same if you’re doing it with aikido and me with Kung fu. Good job sensei

You two could make an amazing colab. You both have a very similar perspective on traditional martial arts, and test your skills under pressure.

ive been studying silat since my teenage yrs and its a traditional martial art where im from. we are actually taught to get hit and feel pain. and we train with real weapons sometimes. real sharp knives and sticks. the reasoning is if you ever get involved in altercation you are used to stress and pain. we dont really spar like muay thai but we train to hit and kick and also to receive them. i think the problem w aikido is that it focus too much on choreography and this guy looks like hes really afraid to get hit.

A core problem with aikido and karate is that neither art was invented for use in an MMA type fight. They were designed to provide tools for combat, often involving weapons as is the case with jujutsu and aikijutsu, aikido's ancester style, and the common street attack for karate. They must be substantially modified by boxing concepts, which was designed for the duel or match, in order to be useful in MMA. Until you understand this issue you cannot make the necessary adjustments. But the comment about testing the techniques is critical. You must do that to know if what you are doing is real or something made up in the dojo.

I don't think that is the problem, the main problem is mentality, when you get in the ring, what is the first thing come into your mind? You want to win, that's all. Because of that, not only Aikido practitioner, but any martial practitioner will want to "do something" to the opponent, it is not "self defense" anymore. That is the first mistake. The second mistake is ego, want to prove our martial is the best and can beat MMA guy. Third mistake is we lost our cause, doubt in the middle of fighting. MMA guys are going into the ring with the correct mind set, they are trained for that, to win a match.

MMA evolved from traditional martil art specifically Brailian Jujitsu. Like what your guest said, the traditional martial arts stopped evolving one due to the lack of needs in peaceful period and thebfear of losing. I believe MMA will also go that way eventually. All martial arts do.

I'm always hesitant to accept when someone says something such as "There's a lot of good stuff in every martial art". It's a statement that sounds good and fair but there are martial arts out there that are complete and utter bullshit and there's nothing in them that can be redeemed. So, it isn't true. And if you are trying to say that there's something of value on Aikido because there's something of value everywhere, you haven't proved your point at all. I actually like Aikido and I practiced it for 6 months. I'm aware of its strengths and weaknesses and I do believe there's some value to be extracted from it.

Fine, invest a lot of your time in a martial art, studying with a competent teacher (you know, like in any art, there are bullshitters and capable instructors), so you would be able to judge :)

J. Pablo Fernández What? You said that some martial arts can actually be bullshits. I said you are right. So by practicing a lot with a good teacher and studying a lot, you will be able to judge.
@pupeno
@pupeno 6 жыл бұрын
My point was not that some martial arts are bullshit but that the statement "There's a lot of good stuff in every martial art" is not true, so you cannot use it as the proof that there's good stuff in Aikido.

Right so every athlete over 35 is burnt out!? I think it's fair to say that a professional athlete should take recovery serious, but to say they're completely burnt out because they don't do Tai Chi!???.... I don't know seems silly.
