Are trucking companies really forced into hiring unskilled workers?

Are Companies forced to hire unskilled dump truck drivers? Or are they paying low wages and no skilled driver will do the job for that wage?

I would’ve slap that friend of yours in the face if you just said that to me. That was hurtful and disrespectful obviously from someone who’s uneducated about the real world. But if you’re driving a dump truck, you better check that’s just common sense and make sure before you leave the job site that your bed is closed and your gate is locked. That’s just common sense or it should be but that seems to be lacking in the world these days. There are operators and there are truck drivers. You are an operator. Be safe on the road.👍👍👍

Thank you for the educational rant. I remember guys in CDL school who wanted to Drive cement mixers. The instructor tried to talk them out of that field. I worked for a paving company the first day I said what is this NAME on the side of the driver's door thinking it was a great driver. The answer I got back."O" that was the poor dead person that the dump BACKED over. I was just shocked, one of their company dumps had been splatter all over a pasture. No down gate on R-R crossing, the driver thought he could beat the train. The owner wanted to pay me less than the minimum wage out of the yard. I was loading up pavers and loading Dump with gravel. The paving crew in pickup just sat in pickup. I said this is BS Because I challenged him on wages, the first time the tilt trailer broke down in yard NOT my fault. He had crappy equipment. You had to use a piece of wood to force the Hydraulic lever, to tilt the trailer as you ran equipment up the ramp. That's why it broke on me. The chains he used on equipment were under rated. They snapped apart. Here is the kicker, he tried to STOP my unemployment benefits, challenging them to the State. The State must have known this company. I got unemployment between jobs.

25+ year accident free Trucking Veteran here. 1-There are a lot of idiots that somehow acquired a cdl. Head scratching actually. Every new hire last year that used my truck on my off time broke it. 2- every decade I've seen owners/dispatchers/brokers pushing drivers harder and harder while giving bare minimum $, and less respect. The trucking industry is it’s own worst enemy..the companies need to raise standards and stop hiring folks who have no business..I’ve been in the trucking industry for 25yrs and seen it fall standards wise..it’s imperative that we take the initiative to clean up our industry..we need more drivers who take pride in this industry as well as company owners with same mentality..until that happens it’ll get worse

@@jimknight501 I know exactly where you're coming from. I got my CDLs at 19 then at 24 I went into EMS. Was a EMT for 16 years. Everyone thought we were all just dumb amulance drivers until they called 911, then we were expected to work miracles. Pay was always low and worked long 24hr shifts. Now that I'm back to driving a semi truck it's no different on the respect level. I'm just looked at as a dumb truck driver. I don't really care what these people think. I'm blessed to have a really good trucking job making really good money. It takes everyone doing different jobs to make the country run.

Great video!! I drive truck, and I'm well respected where I work. Its some of the general public on the road that have no respect for trucks they share road with that is a concern for me. They cut you off, use the center turn lane to pass and get ahead. They just don't understand what it takes to stop and maneuver a large trucks. Thank you for sharing. In Quebec there is a new law, that all dump truck, must be equipped with a visual and audit alert when the box is off the frame. This alerts the driver of the situation of the dump truck box

You said 3 important things, make sure the box is down, the tailgate closed and the PTO is off. I wonder how many times the box went up going down the road because the PTO was still on! definitely check the box and surroundings in the mirrors.

@@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver Depends on the equipment you are driving. I first started driving dairy farm corn silage trucks in 1964 at age 14. My first driving job as a new dump driver in 1984 I was put in a 1957 Mack B-81 with a 5x4 tranny. The truck had 2 levers coming up thru the floorboards for PTO and up-down box. The old truck rattled like a can full of rocks, and the butterfly hood flapped up and down along with the square pit style fenders. The trannys had different howls for each range/gear combination. The levers on the floor would rattle back towards the rear of the cab, which happened to be PTO engaged and body Up. I caught that body going up in the air seven times the first month I drove it, until I finally bungee corded the levers forward by drilling two more holes in the floorboards. The shop boss tried to fire me for drilling those holes, until I explained to the Big Boss why I did it. 2or 3 times a year they would tear out power lines or traffic signals with the 5 old clunkers, Out of the 5 old B-81's for newbie drivers, mine was the only one with the bungee cord floor levers. Go figure...

I was a OTR driver over 20 years , with over a million mile accident free. The major companies started putting steering wheel holders in the seats . Because they kept cuttig the rates to keep places like Walmart and costco in bidding wars. We had drivers messing up parking all over. So now they reaping what they started.😢

Hey girl !! The 74 yr. old former owner/operator from way over here in N.H. back at ya again. I had been driving small dump trucks for a couple years prior, but I wanted to spread my wings I guess, so in '78 I decided to try some OTR stuff. I was 29 yrs. old and very inexperienced. I bought a '65 Mack B67 single axle tractor for $1500 and set out. Shippers and recievers were very disrespectful back then too, just so you know. If you're 10 minutes early for your appointment you heard "you're not due here for 10 minutes so go sit in your truck and we'll let you know when a door is available". And if you're 2 or 3 minutes late due to traffic or whatever it was " you missed your appointment, so go sit in your truck and we'll do our best to squeeze you in at some point". That got old real quick, so I bought 1 then 2 then another until I had at one point 5 trucks running. Triaxles and dump trailers. So yeah, we're very under-rated and have been always. And as you said, "without trucks, America stops". My dad hated trucks. He was all for the railroads. I'd say "so every store and house is gonna have a rail siding going to it ?" Anyway, I'm it total agreement with you, and that video is bs. You are one of the truckers that make all of us look GOOD, and screw the haters you referred to. They're probably the ones that knock down the "9 ft. Clearance" sign at McDonald's with their motorhome !!!! Keep up the good work girl and we'll keep subscribing and liking !!!!

Dominique, I'm a driver in central Canada, and I agree with you on everything you mentioned. Low wages and really low rates for any type of freight. And I've hauled everything you can think of, from gravel, furniture fuel, general freight, meat, fertilizer, etc. etc. 76 years old and still driving, deck work, mostly super B's. Got my chauffer's license, as it was called back then at 18 years old. I've been around awhile and seen different wages and rates. Got 95 cents an hour when I started doing local work. Highway was 10 cents a mile I believe. Anyways, thanks for bringing this up. Take care and good health.

Dauminique I have been watching and loving your videos for over a year and I have all the respect in the world for what you and Bobby have accomplished. I own my own business in California and I know what it takes to start, run, and maintain a profitable business. Not only that, I drove 18 wheelers for an oilfield service company for several years so I know what it takes to drive a truck. I'm glad you made this video. Companies these days only focus on maximizing profits at the expense of workers. My company requires state certified asbestos and lead trained professionals and there are not enough in the business so they can pretty much dictate their own wages. Everyone should be paid a living wage for doing their jobs.

My thing is this. If a Driver can't make enough money to support him and his family, he or she will jump ship. Now will the grass be greener on the other side of the fence, maybe? I don't want my drivers to even have to worry about that, what bills to pay, what bills to only pay X amount on. All my drivers make enough money to support their families with out additional income. Will they have to budget more than likely, but they will never have to worry about what bills to put off till next month, or have to experience living in a homeless shelter like I did for 8 months.

I left lowboy hauling because the money wasn't there because like you've mentioned in your post companies are too "cheap on their pockets" to pay us. I dabbled into becoming an equipment operator in the Union and haven't looked back. but I do keep my CDL up to date in case the day comes that for whatever reason the union goes on strike and layoffs start or we hit another "furlough" pandemic lol I still do appreciate y'all brothers & sisters of the highway though because my equipment shows up because of y'all bottom line

Started driving a truck in the 80's and its always been that way. The reason is that truck driver that leaves the bed up or plows into the back of a car. The damage done by one bad driver paints a bad picture of the rest of us.

Our fire trucks have large flashing/rotating lights, in the cab on the cieling, that warn of a compartment door that is left open. Dumptruck manufacturers should start making these standard.

You may be forgetting of the Fringe Benefit package : Hospitalization Social Security Taxes Retirement ( 401K’s ) Workman Compensation Uniforms Paid vacation package Paid sick leave Breakdown pay Often these add up to more then the wage .

Who gets those in dump trucking? Some of those are required by the government but most dump truck jobs don’t pay uniforms, vacation, sick leave, breakdown pay or any retirement other than social security.

Hi Dauminique, I started driving a dump truck in the late 60's for the highway dept. in the town where I lived at that time. Went on to drive 18 wheelers for 38 years after that. Never drove cross country, but for a number of years I was a regional driver. Those people who call us dumb because of the industry we're in are the same people who call animals dumb. They don't have a clue. For the last 25 years I drove, I was a teamster, and retired a proud teamster. By the way you speak you are proud of what you are doing, and rightfully so. So many thoughts running through my mind here. I drive Triaxle for a road const company. Have for many years. Also was an O/O for many as well. You're spot on young lady. My company has actually been using an apprentice program. Bringing people in who have never driving heavy equip before. It's scary. Rhythm is the key. Perform your operation the same every time. Position, set brake, check clearance, pto in, open gate, raise bed, walk the load, pto out, lower bed, set brake and check gate, get in and latch gate. If someone calls you on the CB, phone, or stepping on your battery step. Can break this rhythm. And that's when trouble happens. Of course, hauling asphalt, which is mostly what I do, is different. As you well know. I tell my company that we are the most visible part of the company. We are the most scrutinized and criticized. Yet we're treated like you said. Go figure.

I have been an OTR driver for 45 years, even as an owner operator, many things get passed off in the name of safety, but I believe safety is paramount, a driver should have enough common sense to know what to do, and what not to do, I received a text message this week from my Director of safety, telling me he was nominating me for driver of the month. I work for a fairly big company in Canada with 800 trucks, I am about to receive my 3 million Miles safe, driving award with the same company off over 25 years. Just want to say kudos to you for your tenacity and that I enjoy watching your videos. Keep ‘em’ coming.

When I lived in Northern California. I used pulled dump vans hauling soda shavings from the Mills. Back to the yard and back and forth all day. And you as soon as they let him down turn the PTO off look through the mirror make sure they were down. And got off and did a walk around. Even though it was only shavings I saw that still. I knocked him off. When I moved to Missouri I drove in dumps and dump trucks. Always made sure they came all the way down before I got off. Turn the PTO off. Get out make sure the tailgate was locked no rocks anywhere on the tailgate the tongue or even up above on the box. Start a month ago girls going down the highway I guess he forgot to close the tailgate or didn't shut the PTO off and it went back up and hit the overpass. And yes this is where trucks have rear view mirrors.🤷🏽‍♂️. Good thing he was empty.🤙🏾

A few years ago a dump truck driver left his trailer box up in Hamilton Ontario canada and it ended up hitting a huge bridge which was shut down for days to be checked out for structural damages. Everyone was blaming the driver and wanted to literally burn him at the stake. It came out in court that the driver was being forced to work crazy hours and was literally going through the motions. Working 17 hours a day 7 days a week for months can and will make any highly professional driver eventually make a mistake just like this. He was found not at fault.

Love the rant and agree with everything you said. I am a truckie here in New Zealand. I drive a Freightliner Argosy curtain sider that is legal up to 54,000kg or 120,000 pound for you guy's over the pond. I am also a former driving instructor for people wishing to drive trucks. My truck is 23 metres long so I spend more time looking in my mirrors, to check my trailer position, than I do looking out the windscreen. Keep up the good work, the industry needs more people like you in it globally.

We use Mack DM’s as site trucks hauling from the mill to the landfill. We have a limit switch with a dash mounted red pilot light that’s on when the bed is up at all! New employee hit a pipe crossing with waterlines and airlines damaging them! Just not paying attention!

A driver of a dumptruck left his dumptruck bed up and hit a pedestrian overpass and it Killed him. Leaving the bed of a dumptruck up should be easiestly noticeable if you're the driver. Unless you're on drugs, drunk or to stupid to be driving.

A lot of companies are under paying their drivers,even the ones that have been working for them for years, so that driver is eventually going to move on to a different company paying a higher salary,that’s pretty much what I’m doing at moment. And for real there’s no reason why a dump bed should be up in air rolling down the road. All of those indicators you mentioned are spot on.

Well said. I love watching your videos as I am a flatbed tractor trailer driver hauling construction materials throughout Florida and Georgia. I haul mostly rebar and fasteners. I go to a lot of job sites and I see how a lot of morons look down at us drivers. I think to myself if it wasn’t for us truck drivers people wouldn’t have anything. Anything that we have in our homes or vehicles a truck driver brought it to the store for us to purchase whether it be your vehicle, materials that built the business or house we live in. Or even something as simple as the food we eat. A lot of people really take us and the crap we go through for granted. Well said Dauminique

I don't want to generalize but this is a world wide phenomena where truck drivers in all sectors are underpaid or the employee make use of unskilled driver / operators. This must be stopped. So, I’ve been a mechanic in the trucking industry for over 30 years, I’ve not heard truck drivers ridiculed or called the lowest of the low. There people that are inexperienced and make mistakes in every industry. I think more often than not drivers get complacent in the truck. You can see that every day on the roads with their speed and following distance. The driving habits slip. On the bodies being raised, and this goes for ant truck with a bed the lifts, roll off, dump trucks, flat beds, there is supposed to be a bright light and alarm to alert you your bed is up. But most in the private owner operators have been defeated or bypassed and removed. Roll off trucks are speed limited when the carriage is raised, at least at the blue garbage company. Truck drivers are the vital backbone to our country. Your entire house and household was brought to and made available to you by truck drivers in trucks. Thank you for the job you do.

I agree with you 💯💯💯💯💯 Dominique, I drive end dump & lowboy, most of my moves with the lowboy are over width like a foot on both sides so yes I gotta be going back and forth from looking in front of me to mirrors. A lot of times I can see another driver starting to come towards me & I get there attention & they pull it back over so we dont swap paint.

My thing is how could you not feel that the bed was up . I mean the truck would very unstable . I drive semi OTR and when something dont feel right I pull over and check , of course I check my truck constantly as I am heavy haul .

In the plumbing and hvac industries we see it a lot too. Owners and managers don’t want to pay good wages for good experienced people. You end up with a flock of goobers and one good tech that is kept to clean up their messes

I was just thinking the same, Wages in the hvac industry are way low and good techs are leaving the trade and moving on to do other things. Fresh out of trade school techs are not well prepared or trained even in the very basics. Low IQ is a real thing (not meaning to be disrespectful), but we are placing people with no common sense or aptitude for jobs in trades they have no business to be in just because we need to find them something to do, these are the ones causing all the problems for those who actually know and care.

Hi Dauminique, you're video's are awesome thank you for putting some great advice out there. It's just the same here in the UK, the majority of the public's attitude towards truck driver's sucks, even some of the OTR driver's look down on dump truck driver's. The majority of truck driver's here are pushed to the limit by there employers and are maxing out there hours hence the reason they cut corners and drive as fast as they can, that's when the problems start. I've been lucky in my driving career to work for companies that want you to do everything by the book. Keep up the good work and stay safe. Sending love from across the pond ❤ 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
