Many Russian politicians justify the recent actions of Russia in Ukraine with the excuse that Ukraine and it's people are Russian. In this video I try to explain why this view is problematic by delving into Russian and Ukrainian history and the origins of those nations.

Honestly mostly slavic since our language traditions and culture are slavic. We honor the accomplishments of the Bulgars who were responsible for establishing an actual functioning state (and Empire) but other than that their culture and language are long gone.Still their legacy remains. As for thrace many people indetify as having thracian heritage or DNA . Especially in the Southern half of the country where I'm from. However the only things that have remained from them are their crafts and a few old traditions like in Southern traditional dancing Our educational system makes us study ancient thrace , then pre-migration slavic peoples then slavs in the balkans and then the dissolution of Old Great Bulgaria when these 3 cultures meet together. I guess ethnicity is really strange and sometimes artificial thing especially in the balkans. Hope i answered your question.

Great video. I would like to correct the following: 1. Macedonians are Hellenic people. Slavomacedonians are indeed Bulgarians. 2. The concept of ethnic identity is not new. It became popular in late centuries but all ancient Hellenic states/kingdoms had an ethinc identity as well. They were divided for various reasons but overall all of them knew that there was something in common that linked them.

Yes although it largely isn't the same thing as today's ethnic identity, afterall if was so long ago if took time to mature into the same thing we got today. Not to mention a lot of Greeks also later abandoned it during Eastern Roman times to call themselves Romans already making it even more confusing. But I do agree ethnic identity existed earlier, I'd place the birth of the Bulgarian identity during the reign of Tsar Boris and Tsar Simeon The Great, although a baby back then it came from a mix of Thracians, Slavs and Bulgars and took a lot of time to develop but if I were to place a concrete time period of when it was born, it'll be that.

to understand this you must look at how the other countries percieved them... if a polish man came ti kyiv he said that the people in these lands are "rus" ...lets take germany for example...they were "germanic tribes" yes there were different german tribes but they were all "germanic"....people always find a way to divide first planets then continents then counties then muncipalities then citys then villages, then family.... so whats even the point...people are never "the same" unless they have a reason for it such as uniting for a bigger cause such as forein invasion or in todays time to "win an argument". we dont even know the real history we just know what was written of it...and that could be propaganda as well lol.

I'm gonna disagree about ethnic identities was created at 19th century. Greeks was nation during Persian wars even where built in different states with different governments. Herodotus says that crearly in his history. The other Europeans yes was made nations after they became country first. The first ever country was France, second Russia and third England. But they where not nations before. Greeks was. Also Hebrews, Punjab, Armenians, where nations before the birth of Christ and before they form their country. As for "Macedonians" they are not Macedonians, they are Bulgarians mixed with Serbs and Albanians. Macedonians are Greeks, descendants of ancient Greek Macedonians and only them they have the right to called Macedonians. No one else. Is like Slovaks start to call themselves as Bavarians just because they jealous the German Bavarian history. YOU see the things with Bulgarian perspective but you are wrong because modern Bulgarians they have nothing to do with the original BULGARS who was Turkic people. Modern Bulgarians are by 60% Slavic people, 30% Greek people who lost their identity and 10% other nationalities like original BULGARS, other Turkic people and Romani gypsies. Also no connection with ancient Thracians as Thracians or where Hellenic people or Hellenised. They was not Slavic for sure and the descendants of Thracians they mace the second Hellenic civilization of Eastern Roman empire who today knows as Byzantium. History means the history of the people not the history of the land. The land change hands. History of the people (nationality-ethnos) means same bloodline, same language, same tradition and same religion even the last today dosent exist. The only nation in Europe who remain the same are Greeks, no one else. All the others are mixed people who created countries and after their national identity
