I'm amazed you didn't mention transmission fluid change, that's also a must with these VW vehicles
@mikealicious3848

By the time I started driving mine, the transmission was never serviced. Started shifting hard, did a drain and fill and then six months after that transmission service, it started slipping at 120k+ miles. These transmissions are not “neglect tolerant.” If I do decide to replace my transmission I’m just going to go by the Haynes manual and service it every 30k miles or 2 years which ever comes first.

@@mikealicious3848 General rule of thump is never service a Automatic gearbox after 100k miles if it's never been serviced. You you will loosen the coating and clog everything besides other things. Any honest mechanic would have told you that. Sounds like you did it after 100k miles. If you were ever in this situation again. Just ride it until it dies.

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Thanks for the info. I'm still on the original gearbox now. I'm going to replace it with a low mileage used one. I wonder if sourcing the gearbox myself and giving the gearbox to a shop to install will make a difference in bringing the price down. Not in the financial position to get another car at the moment.

This is great to see. I have a 2006 vw rabbit 4 door 5 speed I purchased brand new for what turned out to be the best $16k I ever spent in my life. I am attached to this car now. Even the exhaust is still original, 247k miles and counting. Similiar issues as well, but perfectly a normal part of any aging vehicle. I magyvered the valve cover gasket leak by just putting bars leak in every oil change to avoid that replacement hassle and it worked. Only somewhat major repair ever I had to make was replacing the water pump at 234k miles. The rest is basic maintanence. It's by far the most durable and reliable car I have ever owned. Bulletproof engine, clutch and transmissiion. It will most certainly reach 300k miles. It just keeps going and going and going!! 👍

Mine is an '09. Its been through some work, but it always got me from point A to point B every time. Other than fluids, filters, tires, and brakes, this is what my Jetta has went through. 1. ABS module, 117k 2. Valve cover gasket, 119k 3. Timing belt, 119k 4. Alternator/Idler Pulley, 121k 5. PCV valve, 123k 6. MAP Sensor - Bosch 0261230234, 127,224k 7. Clogged sunroof drain that was emptied, 131,450k 8. Rear view mirror fell off, 131,501k 9. Spulen Ultimate Brake Vacuum Pump Delete Kit For 2.5L, 131,700k I will need to also replace the valve body soon. It currently has 132k miles on it. Center console doesn't close all the way. and 3 door lock actuators are failing.

@mikealicious3848

@@methosa8818 I don't know how it was done since it was done by the dealer. I did not work on cars 4 years ago. The valve body was replaced back in 9/2022. The gearbox shifts are very rough most of the time ever since the valve body was changed. I technically did a transmission fluid flush since the valve body had to be removed. The whole gearbox will need to be replaced with a used one at some point if I decide to keep the car. If I put a used gearbox in, I will make sure to service it every 30k mile/3 years or at the latest, 60k miles/5 years.

Our German made 2010 Golf 2.5 has 139K and it's been very reliable. I change the oil with Mobil 1 since new along with air filter, spark plugs and believe it or not, it's running better than new. I haven't flush the radiator yet but have always topped off with OE coolant and the engine never overheated. I haven't touch the brake fluid yet; it's still great but will soon bleed the brakes just because it's long over due. The brake pads also last a long time. Engine light occasionally came on then off and I just changed the purge valve myself for $13. Changed the engine valve cover with PCV valve last year myself for $100. AC still blows very cold; colder than my 2018 Audi Q5. The headliner suddenly sagged down last year and we replaced it for quite a lot of money by an autoshop with OE parts. Right front strut was blown so I replaced all 4 struts with Bilstein OE4 struts and it's superb. I think I will keep this car till it won't run no more. We had the dealer changed the auto transmission fluid @ 50K & 100K and it's still smooth most of the time. At what mileage did you service the A/T fluid?

I have a 2005 2.5 with 123,000 miles. The trunk stopped closing very early I modded the spring in my Trunk Fix video, original serpentine belt broke, a shop replaced it with some random belt that lasted like 20k then that broke and I had to replace on the side of the road (luckily on the weekend so my wife drove me to VW dealer for belt), my doors don't always lock, passenger window gets stuck down sometimes, I had to rip off headliner, my coolant tank broke replaced myself, otherwise still okay. i bought a 06 2.5 in 2019 for $1000. All ive done to it that doesnt count as regular maintence is a new water pump, valve cover, and some wheel bearings. I have the money for a 2018 Audi S4 (my next car ive already decided), but my Jetta runs so flawlessly that i dont see the point of retiring it yet. Based on how it performs at 240k, i just have the feeling that no joke it would last at least to 300k or potentially more. I don't baby it either, i dog the piss out of it solely due to the fact that it sounds so good at higher RPMs with a custom exhaust & CAI. It's truly a feat of engineering.

VW stopped selling this engine a long time ago- the later 170hp version are great engines. No way a modern turbo gas VW lasts 200k miles without major issues. Though I think the entire automotive industry has moved towards disposable small turbo engines TBH, so it's not just VW.

I have the same year and model with 218K on it. I had to replace the main seal a year ago and in a fit of pique I muttered that this was the last repair I was going to make and my mechanic pulled me aside and told me that with the manual transmission and the bullet proof 2.5L engine I basically have one of the best cars VW ever made. He also told me that he has someone with the same make and model with 400K on it. The secret is religious oil changes, I do mine at 3-4K 'cause oil is cheap, and waiting to drive until the RPMs drop to 7000 at idle, that's when the oil has distributed throughout the engine and prevents as much start up wear as possible. I just start the car and then put on my seat belt, pick my music / podcast, etc., and I'm good to go. I fix little things and replace worn parts they come and it's been serving me very well. I love this car and luckily living in California I have no rust issues so I'm going to keep it going as long as I can.

For ur sunroof. Of you buy and replace the switch/button that opens and closes it, id be willing to bet that it would solve that issue for you. It's very likely it's a short in the switch or if that doesn't work it could be an exposed wore that had the protective layer rubbed off or possibly even a bad or damaged ground. That might help you 2. idk a ton about rid ny cars but can ususally figure out the little simpler things like that. Hopefully my ~not a mechanic~ advice helped! Lol

However I had a colleague with the same model year Jetta with manual transmission last time I saw this car it had 180k mikes and it never had any major repairs. That generation Jetta with the 2 5l or the TDI combined with a manual is the best generation. Then they came with the next gen Jetta in 2011 which was a disaster in terms reliability
