Rihanna also had length in the beginning and has worn it at some point during her pregnancies. She's cut her hair, doesn't mean it can't grow or is in poor health. Some women also have postpartum shedding.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I was disappointed by some of the bashing that I saw, especially the “billionaire” comments as if we haven’t contributed to every other multi-billion dollar corporation-Walmart, Loreal, Pantene, etc. Instead of celebrating the success of our people, some choose to scrutinize, degrade, bash, bully… it’s so sad. It made me think of Gabby Douglas, Serena, Venus, Simone, and so many others who have been bashed by our own when they have worked incredibly hard to excel and are doing the dang thing-representing us all! They were down right bullied about their hair- they broke all kinds of records and some of our people were more concerned about their edges. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I know that constructive criticism can be helpful, especially when you are building a business but demanding our own to show their hair and then overly scrutinize it is so crazy because we don't demand anyone else to do anything and we have been making everybody else rich- no questions ever asked. There was a huge price paid by our ancestors so that we can participate in commerce so when one of us wins, it’s a win for all. If we can not be happy for those of us who have attained success and wealth, we can at least be inspired by it-and see what’s possible. I am so thankful that there are billionaires who look like us! I pray that there will be even more billionaires that look like us! I don't think I have ever written a comment this long but it's long overdue. I have been disgusted with how some of us have treated our own for awhile. I have often wondered how we will ever get the respect that we deserve (consistently) if we blatantly disrespect each other. We need to get it together. Just because someone is a “celebrity” or “influencer” doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings. Thanks again for taking the time to speak up! 💕

Having short hair and selling products shouldn’t be an issue imho. Some of us are so obsessed with length meanwhile hair health is more important. Her hair looks healthy to me and that’s what matters. Personally, I can think of at least 3 women in my circle of friends/family friends who purposely wear their hair short and they are beautiful hair. One wears her type 4 hair in a tapered natural cut with it longer on the top. Another one has a relaxed pixie for like the last 30 years (my mom friend) and it’s so thick and shiny that it looks like a 27 piece quick weave.

When Rihanna came out with her make up line or Beyoncé with her perfume line, I didn’t see all of this craziness aimed at them at the time. People either purchased the products or they didn’t. The same should be done with the haircare lines.

that's cuz hair is different. Hair takes time to achieve a certain result. Makeup and body smell is instant, so of course there was no issue. IF Rhianna showed up a year from now with different results, bigger fro, fuller hair, bald patches filled in and consistent pattern root to tip, THEN THIS, would be what people would buy the product for. I mean we can also look at it like this, she's making the product accessible to all of us while she's growing her hair out and healthier. ...in real time, so in a year's time people can see, wow! this product works!

There is a lot of mental pathology around hair. This is why hair products ( especially those being sold by celebrities) are such an issue for people. It should be embarrassing or at least a reason to get professional help in those who find value in skewering the celebrities in such personal and vicious ways. There is something more than "I dont care for the products" going on here.

Hair growth is determined by lots of things, diest, hormones, etc. This line is for grooming and styling. And we need to stop pushing the idea that the only hair worth admiring is long and flowing. We need to drop that stereotype.

In my opinion, i personally think what it all boils down to is that we are the harshest critics of our own people. I'm not suggesting that people buy products blindly simply because its from our community. But ive never seen anyone go this hard for products like Cantu....which has never been BLK Owned. Or like someone else mentioned, Olaplex, Pantene etc. We dont even know what the owners look like but we know most of these brands dont have us as the target audience (with the exception of Cantu). Yet our people will gladly spend their coins on it, While judging our own people.... celebrity or influencer for attempting to trying to fill in the gaps on areas where they are few and far between. I see some reviews of women with 4c hair rave about some or all of the products from both Beyonce and Rihanna's lines. At the same time i see women say neither brand is for 4c hair.... ignoring the fact that nobody's hair will act identical to the next no matter what hair type they have. And both brands are inclusive to ALL hair types. Maybe thats what people are really mad at.

Interesting perspective. As someone who has mixed feelings about both hair lines efficacy on my 4c hair i feel that it’s fair to critique a hair line that promotes that outs for ALL hair types. It’s impossible to me to have two conditioners in each line that will make all people happy. I wish they didn’t try to target everyone like that. But when the criticism starts to become personal attacks on them instead of reviewing the products, that’s when I feel like that’s our own ugliness coming out on full display.

Exactly!! Everyone should be able to own a business and no matter who they are and if they have on a wig or not. No knows who owns Olaplex. We don’t see their hair. So sick of our community and the antics online. These business woman can’t even enjoy their launch, which I am sure was exciting. Tracee Ellis Ross, Beyonce, Taraji, And Rhianna, as the three continuously promoting their brand, seem very passionate about beauty and hair. So for them personally, why not? I so far have supported Taraji, Pattern, and now Fenty: two are in stores and consistently available, and I am a Fenty consumer, so why not. They all work wonderfully if they want to dawn a wig every now and again. We need to zip it.

I mean I'd say the difference between these celebrity hair care products and the common household brand haircare products is that the latter is much more affordable. And even with the brands that are more on the expensive said, it comes with the understanding that it is more professional, it is higher quality (whether this is true or not is a completely different debate) whereas Beyonce's expensive line is doing what any other pharmacy shop brand is doing. Additionally, I don't think this general dislike of celebrities coming out with some sort of product is locked only to black female celebrities. All over, when there's another announcement of a celebrity coming out with a makeup brand or a skincare brand, its not entirely met with positivity. People are tired of being sold to

Rihanna said her pregnancy caused her hair to fall out. That happens to a lot of women. You can't control hormonal balance/imbalance. I think she would go through it all over again for her kids. She still have hair to grow back but in the meantime she's rocking thick beautiful short hair and weaves and wigs when she wants to. Shampoo and conditioner don't discriminate, people do. Short hair also needs love, products and people to represent them. No one is being forced to use her products which is made not to grow butt length hair to clean and style hair.

I think it's fair to judge since celebrity hair lines come with a price tag. If I'm going to pay $30 for 1/4 of the product, then there has to be an added value somewhere that doesn't come from having more of the product. However, the LANGUAGE used in the black community regarding hair is very toxic, PERIOD. And, as always, your hair looks great!

I don't trust celebrity hair care products marketed to us because I cannot be confident they put in the work to develop them vs simply agreeing to put their name on the outside. I am focused on what is on the inside of the bottles and jars. I also try to but Black and support small business when it comes to my hair. I feel I spent years buying products from people who do not look like me and know nothing about my hair. I’m from NYC. There’s black vendors everywhere selling their own lotions, oils, hair care products, accessories, everything. You BEST BELIEVE I’m checking out their skin, hair, nails, etc when I’m considering buying the product. So if Beyoncé and Rhianna have hair care products, I’m checking out their hair too. I wouldn’t have ever purchased Fenty Beauty or Skin if Rhianna’s makeup and skin looked a mess. That face looks stunning everywhere she goes. Therefore I’m a believer, imma cop that. "Where does the hate come from?" It starts from home. The females in my family were hateful when I was growing up. My aunts, grandmother, sisters, mother, and cousins were sometimes jealous of other women. They would say ugly things to people. I have one female cousin who is younger than me and thank God we have a good relationship. I went through terrible things done to my hair for years by females and it made me fearful of trusting a hairstylist over the years. But I'm grateful for the faithful few who did do my hair right. Adults need to watch what they teach the younger generation about what beauty is. Now that I am an adult, I realize the females in my family had problems and insecurities with themselves. But I am excited to try Rihanna's new hair care line. I'm hoping it will be money well spent.

I love you for speaking out on this issue. For the longest Black women have been obsessed with getting their natural hair to look like mixed women’s natural textures. From the hair on their heads to the constant upgrading of weaves and wigs, the silent group think has been to have hair similar to mixed women. The hypocrisy in the responses to Beyonce’s natural textured hair was illuminating… and embarrassing. Rihanna, being the culture watcher she is, decides to work with her short natural hair and again, responses have been enlightening… and embarrassing. I’m confused why these women were shunned when Tracee Ross Ellis was embraced to the nth degree. TRE doesn’t have Bey or Rihanna’s hair texture. TRE’s is a true high type 3 almost type 2. In other words, her hair definitely is goals for those women wanting a mixed woman’s hair texture. Her products have been met with open arms. But BW are now embracing a variety of other brands touting diversity but who have nonblack owners and always have. Many of the formerly black owned companies are now owned by white organizations. Period. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just figured that her hair type was so far from my own that her stuff wouldn't work for me. But , i think it has to do with people actually liking tracee as a more relatable person to them than how they perceive beyonce and rihanna to be.

Both of these ladies are the face of their products unlike a a corporation that has models for their products. I wasn't that excited for Beyonce products as nothing about her brand speaks hair care and Rihanna wore a 26 piece to sell products. Just no, no's in my opinion. I like Rihanna, her hair is always pretty. But... the market is already over populated with black hair care products. How many more products do we need? Gabby Union, Beyonce, Rihanna, Taraji P, and Trace Ellis Ross... I think Taraji P Henson has the best line, but it is usually the cheap ones that are the best like Auntie Jackie. Lastly, I don’t think celebrity brands would get near as much negative attention and push back, were it not for the price point. When products cost more, people naturally expect a ‘wow factor’ and for more than just a handful of people. When it’s not there, it doesn’t seem worth the time to try over more affordable products. I respect the business women in these ladies, but that’s the market they’ve gambled into. Gotta put up or shut up to be frank. Because the $10-15 gems are putting out and out performing. That’s just business.

When I saw Rhianna's hair it felt "real" She just had 2 babies back-to-back and had some postpartum shedding. This happens to alot of us so it felt normal and natural. I was very saddened by the personal comments. You can tell she really worked hard on the hair care line and as with all of her products, either people will buy them or opt out. But there is no reason to bring our own people down. I admire her drive, guts, creativity and willingness to try new things.

I feel that we are in fact being unfair because all these Black celebrity women are being asked to be vulnerable in ways we never ask other brands to be just to sell products to a segment of people that may not even buy the products in the end. And it's clear those people won't buy these brands because when have we ever asked the leaders of Olaplex, Shea Moisture, Mielle etc., to show us their scalps or whats underneath their braids? The only problem I do have with Cecred is that this brand should've really been marketed as Tina's brand and not Beyonce's since she's the hairstylist. We know that Beyonce's true passion is the art of music and probably even film making and photography. But, hair? She's never mentioned it and this project feels more as if it was done to appease her mother than as her own passion products and this can be seen by the fact Tina is the one who's now making the rounds for the project while Beyonce is doing what she loves marketing Cowboy Carter. So, that one bit of transparency is where I feel like Cecred fell short.

The thing is, (apart from Cantù) all those brands you mentioned that are no longer black owned-they were diy formulations that the creators used on their own hair or their relatives. There may have been tweaks here and there for mass production and long-term preservation purposes, but that’s the reality of what those products are. *The ORIGINAL product lines for SM, Mielle and CD are diy products created by women living and rediscovering natural hair.* I understand your point, I just think it applies more to other brands that have always been white owned, that several naturals have and still use. I.e. Aussie, tresseme, garnier, crème of nature, aunt Jackie’s, ORS, AsIAm (Pakistani owned) proclaim, etc. etc.

I get what you're saying. But oftentimes when those companies were/are purchased by the bigger corporations they end up changing the formulations to ingredients that are more cost effective and easier for them to mass produce. That to me loses the integrity of what the original product was. Also, if you were purchasing those products because you were excited to be supporting a small black owned business you're now no longer doing that. But, everyone has their own motivations/reasons for why they purchase products so I can understand that not mattering to someone.

The reason why I still think they apply in this conversation is because those were the formulas the public had access to at the line’s launch. This is also a discussion that always comes when a celebrity launches a line. So, to me, that’s the fairer comparison. Also you have to consider that several people moved on when those lines were bought out. Some came back (SM) and some didn’t (Mane Choice). It really does depend on how valuable that product is, regardless of the tweaks and ownership. I personally think it more so boils down to which formulation design/motivation you lean towards. Modern or old school? SM and Mielle, despite their ownership is not modern. They might be dipping a toe or two in that direction, but as a company, they are not. Next to none of these celebrity lines are old school. They’re modern on modern on modern.

I think a lot of black women are insecure and typically look for things that make them more white adjacent, will it lay my edges and not leave it curly, will it grow my hair to my buttocks, will it help with bleached hair. The question of will it help my hair be healthy or my curls springy is usually at the bottom of the list. It’s kind of sad. There’s nothing wrong with wanting long blonde hair with layed edges , but the fact that this is the ultimate goal when our hair usually does the opposite. Even when it’s long most 4c hair girls have hair that grows upward not down on backs. All of this is sad. That said, buy these brands if you want. If you don’t want to don’t buy them. Simple as that. I think it’s about reputation. A lot has been said about both of these ladies regarding their beliefs. Some even believe they dabble in the “craft”. Although that’s a rumor, the lyrics in their songs (especially Beyonce) don’t help. To your point, we don’t know the beliefs of these other companies either. However people are more likely to trust nameless/faceless. Is it always fair, no, but we can’t all expect “success” in everything we do. Very interesting, I have heard some of the rumors about witchcraft. But I don’t really know what the real truth is, nor do I really go down those rabbit holes because it would be difficult for me to ever really find out what is real. I think maybe she just did a big a chop or something to promote the line… I would say someone like Tracy Ellis Ross didn’t receive “hate” on her hair care line because she’s been a long time natural and it makes sense for her. I think most naturals have spent hours on their hair and grow a connection to it and a sense of pride to it, so it’s a bit disingenuous of Rihanna to promote a hair care line. I have seen reviews of Rihanna's products and after using the the conditioner gel, some say it didn't work for them. For me if I wash and condition I use an oil or grease my roots and use a leave in to properly finish up. So I wonder if others normally do same.

I think there’s a bit of unfair hate and ridiculousness. I’m a person who has always been identified by my long hair, but at points, like now, I’ve opted to cut and color it, people do that. More to the point, some black women with long aren’t so precious about their hair that they won’t cut it. There’s so much heat styling in entertainment without regard for health, that I get people protecting their hair with a wig. I experienced it once and I couldn’t imagine having any hair left if I had the same person doing my hair for a year. Briefly considered buying melanin hair care and pattern beauty, but honestly these celebrity hair lines have celebrity price tags. I can get 3 products at the cost of the one celebrity product. People have been saying beyonce and riri line was disappointing. I’ve tried Japanese products that women with 4c hair have liked, but I didn’t get the same results. Import costs made them pricey. I can’t fork out that much cash for another let down no matter who is selling it. I already have something that works for less, so to make another mistake like that would be the equivalent of cheating on a good man. I can’t be bothered.

Idc who creates the product, I want it to be stellar, especially when I pay top prices. If Bey and Rih price higher that Design Essentials, As I Am, and SheyMoisture, their products should be better and they aren’t. They created two minimalistic, generic lines that can be used across all hair types to maximize profit. I also don’t want more established brands to get any ideas, like if they’ll pay for $60 for Cecred and it works so-so, we can raise our prices, too!

Some women get triggered when people show their natural left whether that is very short hair or long hair. When it's natural, there's a problem with it. Now, I dont think I will buy those products cause we already have so many companies who cared about making good products when we didn't have any. Not sure if we can fairly discuss the negative comments on Beyonce and Rihanna using only a black woman's lens. At their level of popularity the negativity is just part of the package, you know? There's definitely a good number of black women spewing self-hatred, but I'm sure that the sources of jealousy are as diverse as the market that the two haircare lines are targeting. And that's why I'm personally not going to buy either one's hair products: they're not made for me. I'd rather spend my coin on black women-owner haircare lines made for my hair in mind.

I find this all very interesting . I feel like we’ve come so far in natural hair products . We’re use to seeing videos of pple using the products on their hair and asking them questions .We’re learning so much now about ingredients and techniques that pple can’t just sell us anything. Times are hard now and with everything going up some pple cannot afford luxury brands. But if the product is good and it will work for that person and they wanna support their favorite celebrities y not . I know for me when I started being natural I didn’t buy black owned. It’s interesting because when I think of Cecred, I definitely think of it as a luxury brand, but Fenty I just think of it as a regular mid priced hair brand, because if you look at the deep conditioner from Fenty versus melanin hair care For example, Rihanna‘s deep conditioner is actually cheaper than melanin hair care unless melanin hair care is also considered a luxury brand these days? All I know is that all hair care products in general seem to have gotten a lot more expensive than when I was a kid. lol But I agree everyone should just use whatever works for them

I don’t mind buying hair products from a celebrity. I use kaleidoscope it’s very good for my hair. My hair has responded well with it as well. I’ve been using it for a whole year. The BRAT and her wife made Kaleidoscope. The prices are very reasonable as well. Beyoncé and Rihanna have very unreasonable prices. I know they’re trying to keep a millionaire, billionaire status, but regular people cannot afford their products. So I know a lot of celebrities right now is going through a money phase. Money is not “moneying” like it used to. So yes, they gonna do what sales the best thing going right now: make up, skin products and natural products.

First of all, none of these products are going to change your hair texture. Second of all, hair grows from the inside out. If you want healthy hair, eat right and take the right supplements. Lastly, cut those split ends( what good is long damaged hair???...). I can use any shampoo, but I like Kenya Moore products. I also like the Got 2 B... seriously, it works. I would not pay $100 for any of their products. So fair or not, make it affordable, and folks will at least try it. Black women help build Asia through the hair care business. I just wish some of that money would benefit us and help build our communities. I will help any business that will bless my people!!

I was baffled by two things. The “not making a billionaire richer” took me by surprise. The other was the bullying (IMO) of saying I’m not buying because I haven’t seen your hair from some who don’t even know the owners of most products they use, let alone what their hair looks like. At the end of the day, spend your money where you want but there’s no need to bash someone if their product is not for you. For me, its the fact that their lines don't have anything groundbreaking enough with proper studies to prove their claims like something like k18 or olaplex does. Idc if they're black (and they're obviously not... k18 was clearly not made with black people in mind lol) but they actually created groundbreaking products. Fenty beauty and Cecred aren't cheap but also didn't put anything out that is interesting (only thing I'm interested in is the cecred protein treatment) so I think that is why people care more about the people who made it's hair because their hair would be selling the product. YT people felt the same way about that yt influencer who wears wigs but promotes hair gummies. It just makes sense to prove that it works. And since these are brand new lines with nothing to really back it up (rihannas study is really bad. 30 people for 2 weeks. literally the bare minimum) her hair wouldve been proof or a marketing strategy cause as of right now, it's uninteresting. Also both cecred ans fenty hair are market towards all hair types yet people with straight, wavy, and curly hair (as opposed to coily) don't seem to care as much. they seem very indifferent despite beyonce and fenty wanting hair care lines for ALL only one group didn't have products for them not too long ago so the others don't really give a damn cause they have a plethora of well established brands + new groundbreaking brands (like the aforementioned k18 and olaplex) that cater to them. That's just my opinion though. I don't even live in a country with access to either of those lines and black people are like less than 1 percent of the population.
