Two of the things I love about Blackmagic Design: 1) They LISTEN to customers, do free software/firmware upgrades (also free version of Resolve!), implement user feedback, are in tune with their customer community. 2) FPGAs! Please please please mention this in the LTT video! Their cameras are built on FPGAs instead of ASICs, so when they release firmware updates for their cameras, monitors, and other devices, they're effectively doing HARDWARE upgrades. It's how they can add better quality options to their devices than were previously available and even add RAW output options to cameras that didn't have it before or add encoding for new formats to cameras via firmware upgrades.

@@mikeycrackson certainly not casual, but the Reds he has still have value plus the accessories. I think it is more about not wanting to continue investing in Red. Sure $60k is a lot of money, but in the grand scheme of a business like LMG, they are going to be just as concerned about ongoing costs of the ecosystems as the upfront capital outlay. Plus of course are all the features and benefits that the BMs have that provide content opportunity for the channels like he said and @aspzk pointed out.
@wibble43214 жыл бұрын
@@mikeycrackson this is true, but I think we tend to forget that a lot of the time, what is bought for the business is often content as much as it is a tool. They'll get (and Linus said as much) a lot of content just from testing the BM cameras. The more videos about the cameras, the more they pay for themselves. Then there is the added productivity they could produce. Yes a 10-20 minute KZbin video isn't the same as a 2 hour feature film, but all of the same processes still apply. Also, don't forget that most LMG content is uploaded at 4k and that it is almost always better to shoot in higher resolution and then reduce. You get many options then to reframe, zoom and so on after the event. Lastly, LMG produces tech content, it's kinda part of the job to stay at the front of the curve in most areas even if they (as a business function) don't really need it. It is about generating buzz and interest as much as anything for them - and they do it jolly well.

so from being in the film industry at the start of the transition to digital here are some dated but hopefully worthwhile perspectives. Panavision who is one of the main makers of film cameras back at the start of the digital transition took a film scanner and their cleanest test film and found that under ideal situations film could produce the equivalent of 10k vertical lines of resolution at 35mm. This was obviously done with their best lenses and best camera as an attempt at discrediting the early digital cameras that were only doing 2K or 1080p. Along with this a lot of action films, directors stuck with film because they could blow up the image and crop in without losing as much detail. the reality at the time was that film projection for the end-user was somewhere around Standard definition to 720p equivalent due to the nature of film reproduction and projector maintenance. With those considerations, a digital 12k camera means that you can shoot at the image quality equivalent of 35mm on its best day blow it up and manipulate it more than 35mm due to advances in digital tech from 2006-2009. with those two advantages alone it makes 12k worth it and the lens have been and will continue to be sharp enough.

Totally agree, Blackmagic has always been a disruptor in the market, but always had too many quirks and bugs to be taken seriously, but now with the 12k and their pocket cameras, they have a firm hold on the lower end cinema/commercial market. But I will say, if they don't have some kind of useable auto focus in the next two years, I think they might become irrelevant pretty fast. Even the RED Komodo will have useable auto focus, and the Sony/Canon options are only 1k more with more practical features. I think very soon it will be a standard, and I think they need to start developing it asap, because they have already proved an Arri like image is possible for $1200-4000, so other companies will catch up but with auto focus on top of that.

@@jambononi Oh I agree and I strongly hope that there is room for improvement on their end/camera settings etc. However, for less than half the cost, it seems worth it especially given that they probably have their RED cameras perfectly adjusted after 3+ years of usage, whereas they just received these. does higher resolution mean anything on youtube considering the amount of compression that takes place when uploading?
@gavin20674 жыл бұрын
Its more for editors to zoom in without losing quality and stuff like that. You may get a little more bitrate outof a higher resolution camera on KZbin but I doubt it.
@jambononi4 жыл бұрын
Technically the better the resolution, the less noticeable compression will be. If you upload in 1080p it will be degraded by a greater percentage, so it's more noticeable. So 12k, at a high bit rate, should look significantly better once compressed. But even Blackmagic admits, they didn't make it to be 12k, they developed a new sensor for better RGB capturing and figured out a much higher resolution could achieve that. So 12k is a symptom of better colour rendition. And is presumably easier to achieve than what Arri do, with only 2k footage, but perfect balance of colour, dynamic range... everything except for resolution. My guess is higher res is a brute force way of improving everything else.

I think people need to understand, that certain things designed for professional use cases are measured differently. A private person could or would not pay for it perhaps, but a professional in the real sense of the word would. Nobody is going to bat an eye at paying billions for an oil rig or a village sized coal digger. Many servers will cost 5 digits, some 6. You can easily pay more than a million for a mainframe. The first half way recent supercomputer I heard from in the top 500 and could find a price for, cost more than 100 million $. That doesn't make it a rip off. You cannot get the same for consumer amount of money, and it doesn't have to be better by only the thing private people measure their devices by. A computer with ECC, transactional memory, or fully hot swappable memory and cpus or certifications for use in medical equiment, etc. will cost more, but might not computationally outperform a recent gaming or high end desktop chip.
