Occasionally species that were thought to be extinct do turn up sometimes still very much alive. This is the exception and not the rule and besides that are there enough species in their population to recover their numbers or did they just get a temporary reprieve. In most cases the threats that caused a species to become to APPEAR to have come extinct are still present and even worse in many cases. Thus the threat on a species that is found extant instead of extinct contiinues will continue to push that animal to full extinction a second time for real!!

Why does he still get so upset about his academic standing? Besides the only hopey thingy left is a rescue from Above! Especially since there are prophecies about exactly what is happening now... For example, 'a star' named Wormwood will 'fall' on the rivers and oceans... Chernobyl means wormwood (Fukushima means Happy Island, or something with tongue-in-cheek) Also 1/3 of sea life is predicted to die, not only in prophecy. Both Kevin re nukes and Hambone re Humpty Dumpty tribe are talking extinct salmon and skinny grizzlies. They all need to look up!

If anyone wants an endangered species to research, I urge you to look up the pangolin. They're the world's most trafficked animal and are endangered solely because humans use them for meat and for their scales. They get a fraction of the coverage of other species because people don't really care about them. Pangolins are fascinating creatures that we know little about which is why it's so upsetting that they're not more well known. One day, they'll be gone and we will only have what little we know about them.

Christopher Willis Kahan's work is definitely a big influence on how I look at this. Two other Dans, as well: Kahneman and Gilbert. And a host of other sociologists and psychologists. In a few weeks we'll be putting out a couple of videos that talk about climate change from two different points of view, but that won't be the last time we talk about it, and I'm interested to play around with different strategies in the future.

“Let children walk with nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life, and that the grave has no victory, for it never fights. All is divine harmony.” - John Muir I used to hope that the world would see the issues with climate change and deforestation, and correct its ways to preserve our beautiful planet... but after watching the vicious, brutal nature of people under even the slightest pressure, the unquenchable greed of capitalism, and the outright indifference... I now just hope that we render humanity extinct and allow the earth to recover and re-diversify without us.

@dnw009
@dnw009 3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes empathy of species you don't even know going extinct making you hate your own species so much you want to see it go extinct. The earth is fine. We couldn't harm it unless we make the earth split apart from some kind of massive explosion. Most species that have existed have gone extinct, leaving little if anything behind in the fossel record. You couldn't have met them, won't know anything about them. But they existed just as much as the creatures you now seem so overly concerned about. Humans creating mass species extinction isn't something to be proud about certainly. But our Earth isn't in any danger from us. It will continue to orbit the sun until the day it finally goes dark and that would impact it enough to where life wouldn't ever be able to life on this orb anymore. I agree that the lack of care about the world we life on is abhorrent behavior, but I unlike yourself am not so much a nihilist that I would want my own species and all those that I hold dear to go extinct. Simply so life that will exist after us and is existing and coming into existence during our time on Earth could have an easier time thriving on the planet. Nature doesn't care, the species that make others extinct don't care. The only ones capable of understanding it are the ones also responsible for what is happening. I think you need to look more at the positives and coöperation that does exist between nations and groups to help combat the problems arising due to our increased global footprint than all the negatives. After all without any power to change it you are just making yourself depressed about something you can't ever change.

Yeah, unfortunately, the controlled distribution of all media is in some way or another influenced by the fossil fuel industry. Just look at how they are blocking out the sun with these chemtrails. Everyone thinks its destructive & dangerous chemicals, which I have no doubt they are. However, if there's no sun, there's no free solar energy either. I'd be willing to wager that the vast majority of views on this video came about due to user intervention & searching this channel. Its definitely how I'm here and I've only just found the posting channel today...I must watch 5 to 10 videos like this one every day. the thing that bugs me is that, as a species, all we have to do is give up a few little conveniences and this problem would be so much less threatening. We tell ourselves that we need material comforts to be happy but they really don't, I mean so much of the world lives with little to nothing and they can still find happiness in non-material things. We are choosing to wipe out what may be the only place in this huge universe with life and its gonna cost us if we keep being so ignorant and selfish

One of the biggest things each person can do is skipping animal products, since most of the deforestation is due to making room/growning food for the animal agriculture. @@mikshin9825 and yet that is not an excuse to do nothing yourself. They may do more harm than you, but that doesn't mean you should continue doing your little bit of harm as well. Let us stop being ignorant.

@@urtisk4288 It's even worse than that. I'm talking about getting people to care. To give a damn. Humanity is composed of average persons. Even the wealthy ones spending millions on exotic animals. We are all average. Yet we all have a responsability to care. Wether someone votes or not doesn't really matter. My favorite quote is "It takes one to change a few. Few to change many. Many to change the world. Starts with one." We all have power. But by not giving a damn, we relinquish that power. By saying that other bigger fishes are the problem, we relinquish that power. I don't blame average people for the problems we pose to Earth. I blame average people for giving up, relinquishing their power, and ending up not caring anymore.

@exeggcutertimur6091
@exeggcutertimur6091 9 жыл бұрын
+Pinky7889 What's ironic is this is pretty much exactly how we've manage to cause this problem in the first place. We invented agriculture because at that time we'd maxed out what hunting and gathering could provide. The release of Thomas Malthus' idea of population right at the time of the industrial revolution also suggests that Britain needed to industrialize to feed itself. In a hundred years or so we'll probably switch fully to nuclear power and other less messy forms of energy.
@zorrostealth
@zorrostealth 9 жыл бұрын
+Pinky7889 - your cliff analogy doesn't work because one has to STOP at the cliff before falling over in order to build the glider. No. A better analogy would be humanity got on board the Titanic during the industrial revolution and has wanted it to go faster and faster. Once you crash into that ice berg, you can't repair the hole. The ship is sinking and the band is continuing to play. Getting on the life boats is chaos. Metaphorically speaking, we as a species have no life boats because this planet is all we have. Sorry to say it but enjoy the life you have right now because life on Earth will probably be over by 2040.

+Exeggcuter Timur On the topic of nuclear power, the reactors are still very messy, if not messier. The nuclear byproducts contribute towards our pollution problem, while if just one thing goes awry, the aftermath won't just destroy a couple thousands of species' natural habitat, but ours as well. The good thing is that we're hard at work trying to find an alternate source of energy. No one knows when it will happen, but it will come, and when it does, our lives might not be the same, but we could probably live good lives.

+Maximilian schreijiaeg People think that trees produce oxygen but this isn't entirely true. Photosynthesis uses the energy of sunlight to combine CO2 and H2O to produce simple sugars and oxygen, the plants then respires the sugars with oxygen to produce CO2, water and the energy to live. The plants can use any excess sugars to either store them as starches and oils or as building blocks such as cellulose to grow, even animal proteins are assembled sugar molecules. When plants die, they decompose producing CO2 and H2O. If you include the death and decomposition of a plant, the net lifetime oxygen production is zero. Now geologic forces can bury dead organisms forming fossil reserves and this is where any net gain in oxygen production lies but the real reason why so much CO2 was removed from primordial Earth's atmosphere is water and chemical processes such as the formation of carbonates. Planting two trees for every tree cut down would only falsely soothe the conscious of people who believe themselves to be environmentally concerned.

+MAXIMILIAN SCHREIJAEG Well for habitat displacement, you should have every developer pay to have two acres dedicated to wild life reserves for every acre they develop. Problem is that we already have something like that in place but the banks simply create wild life funds for developers to invest in to get around environmental legislations and such funds essentially allow double booking the respective claimed benefits to the environment. Whenever you create man made regulations, someone finds a way to circumvent it. We probably won't be able to just legislate our environmental problems away but it is at least a start.

I don't think it would be an alien, but as every time we had an extinction event we had a huge leap in the evolution towards complexity (the last one erased dinosaurs as reigning and introduced the age of mammals), I think that after this mass extinction we'll have another senicient earthling species quite fast (in geological terms), and I think that that new civilization will marvel at the fossils of our big cities and artifacts and have huge questions about it.

In a way, its actually really really interesting that one intelligent species is capable of wiping so many animals. People talk like if we are disrupting the natural way of things, but aren't we part of the natural world? aren't we a product of this world? Are we earht's biggest achievement or biggest failure? And if we ourselves are another force of nature, isn't this another example of natural selection? the best fitted animals to survive a human world are thriving. Its unfair to say that we are killing all animals equally, rats, dogs, cats, bees, roaches, pigeons, etc they are all a lot more succesful because of humans. The fact that we humans are actively trying to stop some extinctions is actually the unnatural thing of all this, the most "human" thing. Animals usually don't care about species outside of their own. I'm not saying that we don't have this moral duty or that we shouldn't try to stop it, i'm saying that it is really interesting, how we apply our own human moral to nature. I also want to point out that saying that we put in risk ALL life on earth is a huge exaggeration, a lot, and i mean a lot, of life forms on earth are a lot more resilient than us humans, we are actually quite fragile. So in the future, when we die by our own doing, life would survive and would thrive once again on human's absence. Just look at the other massive extinction events, the condition of some of them are so extreme no human would have survived them.

We are nothing but some atoms bumping into one another. Yet we are something entirely different. (see Conway's game of life) So, in a way, you are right. We are the crowning jewel of the Universe. Except, we might go extinct along with other species. (or survive the fall of the hammer by turning into machines. Maybe it is the final step of evolution.) Anyway, I am eager to see the solution of the differential equations of the dynamic system known as earth!
@diegog1853

Taosif Ahsan yes i do believe we are earths biggest achivement, although the argument for the other side is also very compelling. Since any time you look at any natural environment (aside for maybe bacteria and other microorganisms) nature always seems to regulate itself, to find that delicate balance. Even if you are the apex predator of an ecosystem you don't wipe out all big herbivores, because a better prepared herbivor will take its place. So in the end you have these highly specialized creatures, because all the niches need to be occupied. But then the human comes and its nothing like that, its like its own thing, we don't ocuppy any particular place in nature and we are able to disrupt any other particular ecosystem. So in a way it looks like an evolutionary failure, since we mess up our environment, every time that people talk about natures beautiful balance i think, yes... But what about us? The theory seems to fall down if you mix humans in lol, so usually people just ignore it. But in the other hand, we are the only species that is able to determine what its own place in nature is going to be, and ultimately that could be a good thing for nature as a whole. We are able to say "you know what? we are sorry for so much trouble, but we are in this together lets try to survive together" there is a huge cancer epidemic with tasmanian Devils that will wipe out the species and we are trying to stop it. Hundreds of species are being protected to avoid extinction regardless if we are responsible for it or not. A species going extinct is part of the natural world, natural selection, even if caused by humans is, well... Natural, and common, and even healthy. But we are able to say, we are having none of that, these are our animal friends we will make it together. So yeah... At the end of the day, a human is not just the biggest evolutionary achievment, but it may also be earth's smartest move, being the earth a huge natural habitat. Even if we already suffered some casualties, i have big hopes for us to be better as earth protectors lol
@DestryKorth
@DestryKorth 6 жыл бұрын
Roads, buildings, pollution, and much more are all things caused “unnaturally” by humans. And all of these affect ecosystems resulting in habitat loss and the death of many animals, even leading to the point of extinction. Essentially, humans only do unnatural things to the earth now, having a worse impact than an asteroid. Even the screens we are looking at are only possible through intense mining by people we forget never get to live like us. First world countries are the first in line to drain every possible resource, and release every unusable contaminate back into the earth. Earths biggest achievement would be a species bent on helping the earth and all those on it, not the opposite.
@diegog1853
@diegog1853 6 жыл бұрын
Destry Korth i agree with you in some things, but not in everything. We are not close to be the biggest mass extinction event, the great dying actually was the closest thing to loosing all life on earth, and as i said, even if we do something really stupid and we all end up dying, we are quite fagile, stronger organisms will survive and reconquer the earth. Also... calling what humans do "unnatural" is pretty arbitrary, as if we are something above nature. Construction, living in society, even leading other species to extinction is something normal in the animal kingdom. The fact that no other animal does it at this scale only means... well exactly that, we are smarter than any animal the same way the cheeta runs faster than any other land animal. But thats okay, thats why i find interesting the question "are we the biggest creation or the biggest failure". Because in a sense, we are indeed the biggest achievment of evolution, thats what it has being trying to do for millions of years, trying to make a species that adapts, that has no enemies, and after millions of iterations of trying sharper claws, thicker shells, faster legs. It turns out more complex brains was the solution all along. "Earths biggest achievement would be a species bent on helping the earth and all those on it" i 100% agree with this, and i said it earlier, one of the most unnatural things that humans do is caring for other species, we actively try to save species from extinction for no particular reason, just because it feels wrong. Even if extinction is a natural part of evolution. Thats something that animals simply don't do, its hard even to find species that care for others in their same group. Yes we don't care enough, but society is improving in this matter, 1000 years ago no one cared, 100 years ago there were hardly any laws to protect nature. I think we might get a chance of becoming that "biggest achievment" :) or maybe not, maybe we are far too screwed or we'll never change.

Yeah, we’ll have to wait hundreds of millions of years for pigeons or billions of years for roaches to evolve into something equivalent to human innovation and then they will have a good laugh that we thought we were so advanced and yet couldn’t save ourselves.

I hate to say and it sounds cruel to most people, but I think there should be worldwide strict reproduction regulations and rules. Overpopulation is the main reason of those problems. One biological child per couple and not more! They should do education on family planning and protection. Free birth control for everyone! There also should be tests before people are allowed to have kids and adoption should be a lot easier. One thing that for sure is if we keep going like that, it will come back to us and it won't be pretty!

True, first world countries waste a lot more, but human is human, and every human has the same basic needs. In fact one of the main reasons why those countries are so poor is because there are too many people. And similar signs are already starting here as well(lesser jobs, bigger gap of rich and poor, more crimes, more diseases, etc). In fact there are programs that educate people in the poorer countries not to have many children. They explain that more children means less for the rest of the family. When the couple has only one or two children, those children have higher chances to go to school since it is easier for the family to support them(kids cost a lot of money).
