You'd be hard pressed to describe Carlin as non-cynical. He questioned everyone and everything and called out anything he perceived as bullshit immediately. He often spoke about how much better the world would be if people put more emphasis on desiring the simple things in life instead of an endless stream of material goods to placate our stupid brains until it was time to consume even more material goods, classic cynicism. As for stoicism, it's a philosophy built on self discipline and acting virtuously and those were also both tenants Carlin espoused as well. He generally contended that one should do good to all those that deserve such treatment and give nothing to those who would abuse such compassion. Stoics also minimize the emphasis on material possessions in favor of a focus on self improvement which is also classic Carlin. I could go on but then this would become a dissertation.

I like stoicism and read stoic philosophy often and I’ve tried to implement stoic philosophy into my daily life. My main criticism of stoicism is the modern interpretation of the philosophy as a sort of path to success. You read the books and you take cold showers and wake up at 4 am and stop masturbating and grind grind grind like there’s no tomorrow and then you’ll be successful. Of course, success isn’t the goal (or they say it isn’t) but the message is clear: stoicism will make you rich and successful. And then you’re told that when you’re successful you shouldn’t be preoccupied it’s your success, but success is still the goal. Which is too bad because I think it has a lot to offer the regular person. A lot of philosophy is incredible but a bit too deep and inaccessible to regular folk. Stoicism is very easy to understand and implement in your life. I like the press it gets but I don’t like the Sigma male mindset it’s often associated with. humans are inherently and irrevocably self interested. Every action taken by any human is fundamentally always selfish and that is "good" because it has been benefiscial in our evolution. So yes cynicism, skepticism etc.. is a useful pov for all to survive. But beyond that practical application cynicism, nihilism and egoism are useful concepts to understand reality and people in it. Nihilism, absent of god or magic is the only objectively true depiction of the nature of universe and ethics. Being "moral" is meaningless beyond self interest, there is no obejective good, evil, right wrong. Universe doesnt care and besides scientific world view tells us that we have no free will anyway so moral agency is impossibility even if "magic" existed. Egoism is the only moral theory that accurately describes peoples stated "morals" and behaviour, which are always rooted in self interest... What do people seek? Happiness and contentment to satiate their hedonistic needs. Cynicism allows individual to peel the lies that are spoon fed to us by culture and understand the true nature of things.

Do you/y'all have any recommendations, both deep dives and introductions (that I can pass along to those who'll listen?). Thank you for reading my comment! I would love to see the "R" rated origin story of Oscar the grouch. How did he end up in a trash can and did have anything to do with Regan? God damn it I do have a Freddy got F story. My friend was at his moms but his dad grounded him and I was over. We hear the car pull in while we watching this movie. I hid in one of rooms and they let him in. That movie was playing and they all sat down to watch it. I didn't get to see this particular scene but apparently there was an elephant and it was worse than the hotdogs on strings when playing the key board. He said "What are you watching?" and they played it off like this was normal but that movie was not like other movies. Now that I think about it Tom Green my have been a pioneer on the frontier driven by the love of money and fame. Idk if he knew but he did leave and came out and everything was fine.

But you don’t give similar props to Endgame? I mean, I’ll agree Infinity War is probably slightly better, but Endgame lands the story so well, especially how Tony and Steve finally reach the end of their stories by borrowing something they initially resented in the other (Steve becomes a little selfish going back to have a life with Peggy, while Tony makes the big sacrifice Steve always doubted he was willing to make). I also thought the way they treated Thor’s depression and PTSD was very realistic (for better and worse) and the scene between Clint and Nat when they are fighting to save the other and sacrifice themselves instead is a perfect balance demonstrating what real love looks like in the aftermath of Thanos’s abusive love of Gamora ending in his murdering her for his goals. Plus who didn’t cheer when we saw Captain pick up Mjolnir and squeal like a 8 year old when Cap finally gets an “Avengers Assemble” off with basically every actor in hollywood playing a signficant character in the mix. Lastly, you have the juxtapositions of the two versions of Thanos that I really love. Specifically, I think Endgame Thanos only loses because seeing the success of Infinity War Thanos makes him overconfident. There’s just so much great balance between those two stories that I can’t really picture only one as great- they both are and both should have been Academy Award nominees.

@@ronalddepesa6221 I can’t argue with that. I’ve probably seen Infinity War at least 5x and the scene when everyone gets dusty just kills me, especially Peter and the way he is begging not to go because he knows exactly what’s about to happen. My only gripe with calling Infinity War the clearly better movie is that to me, it feels incomplete without Endgame, and that Endgame managed to do some awesome moments even before Cap is worthy and the big final all out battle. Something like the Cap fighting Cap scene is one of my absolute favorites in the MCU (perfectly capped with “that is America’s ass”.) While not exactly the same, it is sort of like picking the better Kill Bill film- the whole point is the story is not just one movie.

I am a cynic and often have the mindset that the only people who are happy are those who are simply dumb or not paying attention. But I like to think that whenever I am being a debby downer, it is coming from the right place. I’m not trying to make people feel uneducated or convince them they should be less happy. I like to think I use it as a reminder to especially younger generations that you have to work for happiness and even those who deserve it don’t always get it. My wife, who taught primary age kids for 12 years, now works as a corporate trainer and the main (senior) trainer she works with used to be a professor of Spanish Literature. At a recent training, my wife mentioned that she needs to use notes when presenting and her coworker was trying to present ideas to wean her off of the notes. To me, this was a perfect example of why most professors aren’t really teachers. My wife, who was hired because she excels at teaching, said what tools she needed to do a good job, and the professor began explaining why she should actually not be using those tools and should try to be more like the professor.

In science and in martial arts, cynicism is the name of the game. Question and scrutinize everything, but when proven otherwise, you politely accept that this new idea is valid. One benefit I think can only be delivered by a cynical outlook is seeing through the “orphan crushing machine” narratives. When stories seem heartwarming, a bit of negativity is needed to see the ugly truth behind it. Granted, positivity also has its place. The ideal is probably a healthy balance of both and become wise: knowing when to be positive and when to be negative and how to use both in proportion

12:46 this was interesting. It doesn't really seem to mean a whole lot with regards to philosophy, but it's definitely a powerful criticism of political institutions. I found that words not only define and redefine our lives, but they also effect our thought processes. We mostly think in terms of what we can express linguistically. The cosmopolitan idea that human beings share a common experience and have similar needs, and that they should try to live harmoniously, is pretty solid political/cultural philosophy. Honestly, I didn't get a whole lot out of this. I couldn't even tell you what either stoicism or cynicism means according to this video. I will tell you that I have practiced both first hand. As far as I'm aware, Stoicism is practicing humility, whereas cynicism is offering critique. They're inevitable compromises that humans must make in this world, it would seem. I feel like some of the stoic advice referenced, about getting comfortable and not expecting anything is not especially interesting. It's not very intellectually demanding, or anything you would need someone to tell you. Neither is diversifying your portfolio. Honestly, it comes across a bit white collar, or privileged. Like first world problems. It certainly doesn't really offer coping mechanisms for existential crisis or depression, although that seems pretty specific to me. He's right about one thing that I've said before, its easy to offer criticism, but hard to come up with a solution. I don't really intend to offer advice beyond the obvious to anyone, because it's the only good advice really. If its too subjective, it's just not appropriate, and it won't get taken or it won't work. I would say, the best form of cynicism is informed cynicism. If you have some evidence to back your claim, or perhaps an appropriate alternative, then you've been a successful cynic. It's actually a more relevant, albeit less exciting, topic for me.

5:45 I might be wrong in my understanding of what Seneca was trying to say. I don't believe that his point was as similar to the fundamental tenets of Buddhism as your comments seem to indicate. In other words, he wasn't stating that the wanting of anything (including MLXXXp, 3D, Hi-Res tapestries) is the cause of poverty. Seneca's lesson doesn't end here, with desire having caused poverty. Rather, he chose to anchor his lesson one step deeper, for a firmer hold. I believe he is pointing to the implication that having unfulfilled material desires, while simultaneously being unable to do anything to satisfy those aims, can lead directly to a mindset of scarcity and then to one of poverty (not to say that the two are mutually exclusive). So,when someone wants something (note also that Seneca is not talking about wanting things that are necessary; i.e., food, water, etc.; rather, he is talking about luxuries), something which is beyond that person's means, that person still has the potential to remedy the situation. And it's all a matter of the outlook the person chooses to take. Mentally destroying yourself over something that just isn't going to be affordable can occur, and when it does occur, it will be accompanied by a mindset of poverty, of scarcity, and of inadequacy. This feels bad. However, should you choose to take a different view of the situation, you can realize how this object of your desire is unnecessary. You can turn the table to see the other side. You can understand that you successfully avoided the damages to your life which almost certainly would have occurred if you had chased after the object. The money you saved by not buying the thing in the first place, and that you saved by not putting the thing on your credit card for four years or longer, at thirty percent interest or more, and, also, the absolute beating which your credit score didn't suffer for decades (and which would have doomed you to a life of having a low credit score and, as a result, having to pay many thousands of extra dollars for rent, insurance, a house, a vehicle, a business loan, etc., as a result of this...the necessarily high interest rates which accompany low credit scores); All of these should be enough to put a smile on your face. If not, then you can at least look forward to enjoying the schadenfreude when, in relatively little time, the object of your former desire becomes obsolete, or it is marked down in price for the latest model, or it suddenly becomes the centerpiece of a class action lawsuit, or it is found to cause genital cancer in baby kittens, or whatever other disaster soon befalls the product, finally occurs.

I just want to be like my dog, really - which is where cynicism comes from. Odd to have an episode on cynicism and not mention that. But, all-in-all, not a bad addition to the videos describing cynicism and placing it in a modern context. Quite a good one, really. Still weird that it left out all the stuff about dogs and homelessness. It was pretty key to what Diogenes was getting at. But I have never seen one of the non-homeless explain it all in terms I fully understand it. Not even the good ones, like yourself. 2 decades of homelessness opens your mind to Diogenes and cynicism in a way that you just don’t get without it. It’s the double-edged sword - great enlightenment, shit living conditions. But yeah, I do think it’s cute when I meet anyone who’s not been on the street describe themselves as a cynic, or try to define cynicism (this isn’t about you, I don’t know your circumstances and don’t want to assume anything, it’s just something I’ve found when talking to people about this).

Whether stoicism, cynicism or any other generalized philosophical approach to thinking, isn't there a time and place for all of it? I think everybody in the world exhibits traits that could be placed under conflicting philosophical labels at different times and when discussing different topics. I feel like we get lost under "academic banners" sometimes and get more from a philosophical approach when it is applied to a specific example. I need to read more about Diogenes, but at the same time like the comparison to modern comedians... something about telling the truth bluntly about a situation is hilarious to most people... so interesting.
