Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks and insights! I always love seeing the thought process of other artists. I tend to gravitate more toward Tate's "exploration" style of sketching--my sketchbooks are typically filled with anything from sketchy unfinished scribbles to more rendered/inked drawings. I went through a period where I was worried that if I didn't have only finished, beautiful drawings in my sketchbooks, I'd somehow loose my credibility as an artist if people would happen to look through them. But then I realized that a sketchbook is what I do for myself, and for my creative and personal artistic exploration. I now feel the most comfortable and relaxed in my sketchbook--knowing that I am drawing for myself rather than for the approval of others. It's a very safe place for me. Jake: I liked the bit about your "first page" in your sketchbook--how it's easy to feel pressured to make an awesome drawing for the first page (I've struggled with this!) Tate: I love seeing all your exploration and comics--you've got those punchlines down pat! Thanks again! :)

Keeping your sketchbooks around is great because it lets you see how much you've improved from the past. You also are able to appreciate the new abilities you've acquired over time keeping you a humble artist and look back into things you might have forgotten about. It's a nice memorial to keep as an artist that keeps record of your interests and abilities :)

Thank you for this video. I have been subscribed to your channel for quite sometime now but never really watched your videos. Haha go figure. Well this one for sure has helped me. I am a struggling artist trying to find my niche and someone to look to for some guidance. I wasn't able to take any formal art classes in high school because I was always too busy with band. I look back now and sort of regret that decision to do music instead of art, but my Senior year I started in Drawing II and then was moved into the AP Studio art program where I grew leaps and bounds. After coming home from my mission, I found a renewed inspiration and have been trying and fighting like crazy to break out and get my name out there. My wife and I are in the process of writing a comic book ourselves and I am trying to get my name out there so that I can stop working for the man and start pursuing my own dreams and my talent that I have been given. I didn't go to art school so do you have any advice that could help me just start doing it? If that makes sense? haha I know it won't be easy but I am ready to go full steam and see where it goes from here. I use the same method as Tate's. I use A4 printer paper and spiral bind it with black cardboard at the ends. I normally don't like thin sketchbooks though, so I usually make them contain 100 sheets of printer paper. It can take up to 7 months to finish one, though I think that time can definitely be improved to be shorter.

Jake, Tate, and all the commenters bring up some good points on the use of video games for producers and consumers. I only play games on the weekends after around 6pm as a rule, but I feel like they're still important to stay inspired and relieve stress. Then again, I'm a senior in college doing capstone classes, so nothing really makes sense to me right now anyway in terms of consumption and production lol.

I just got a Moleskine Cahier large size pack!!! I decided on those instead of a classic sketchbook or plain notebook because they are light and thin(not extra large... I wanted to be able to carry it around and take it to school) and although they are minimal and kinda nice at first they aren't the nicest of sketchbooks so I wasn't as scared to dive straight into the book! I also got the book with the cardboard cover (mostly because it kinda reminded me of the Field Notes book) and the cover can be drawn on easily and erased

I cannot sketchbook. I cannot sketchbook for the life of me. I honestly Have trouble starting drawings in my sketchbook and sticking too them because I'm too scared to have bad drawings in my book... I'm studying to be a concept artist and after seeing the sketches that professionals like Fheng Zhu create it terrifies me that as soon as I try to draw whatever is in my head that I can't do it... Usually composition and my ugly sketching is the cause... I'm thinking about just picking up a cheaper moleskine style sketchbook and slowly start expanding from what I'm comfortable in drawing to what scares me

Maybe try getting a super cheap sketchbook or one of those notebooks with blank pages? And then just stick your drawings in them. Then you can just slowly start drawing in it while still sticking in the drawings and just start drawing in it more and more?

Maybe try using leftover paper and notebooks around the house to sketch to start off with, instead of getting new sketchbooks, to build your confidence? I've been drawing in my school lined exercise books since I was a kid, so that made me more comfortable transitioning to a blank sketchbook. Because it felt like I was "upgrading" to a better material as I take myself more seriously as an artist, instead of thinking it's too precious to waste.

just don't worry about the quality. If you just draw without focusing on how bad or good it is you will get better without even noticing it. Your own fear holds you back the most; and that's the beauty in a sketchbook, it's just practice and random doodles, you don't have to be afraid, it doesn't hold any value to anybody in the world but you, and that means you can put anything you want to in there and not be afraid to mess up

Slightly flawed opinion of there being producers and consumers and it being better to be a producer. I do agree to some extent, however if there were no consumers out there to consume our creations, we wouldn't be able to make a living for ourselves as self employed artists. I'm a freelance artist and gamer, and i game as much as i draw, ain't no biggy, games fuel my imagination

There's nothing wrong with wasting tons of time playing video games. Often times video games inspire us to create. It's fun to be both a creator AND a consumer. And besides, if there were only creators and no consumers, then no one would consume anyone's art, because everyone would be so busy creating. I don't know if that makes sense? I kinda do this sometimes. I like to make comics, but I don't actually read other comics. I rather make my own. BUT the problem with that is if everyone thought the same way, no one would end up reading anyone else's comics, because everyone would be so busy creating their own, and thus the whole purpose of comic making would be meaningless because there would be no one to read them...

I would disagree with the producer and consumer part because with production comes consumption. With that consumption comes more production, in a way, of sharing opinions and maybe even a point of view on life. What would be the point of producing if there were no one to consume in some sort of way?
