Are you worried about having surgery? You aren't alone. All of us feel anxious about coming into hospital even if the surgery is going to make us feel better. Most people overcome these normal feelings, but extreme anxiety sometimes needs expert treatment. In this video, I discuss pre-operative anxiety, and some of the strategies people use to help themselves deal with a common, but often distressing problem.

As you say, surrender to the process. I dreaded the op for years, when I woke up after, I couldn't believe that the whole thing was over with no fuss. I worried for years for nothing. Trust your surgeon.

I am happy I found this, I am a child going through his second acl surgery in the next few days and I am happy that I am not alone.

I have hydrocephalus and am about to undergo my 29th 'shunt revision'. The after-surgery care has been standard throughout all but one of my surgeries. An IV with a pouch of morphine and another for nausea. I am extremely sensitive to anaesthesia and vomit non stop for up to 3 days after surgery. On one occaision I was told after arriving back to my room that pain killer and anti-nauseant was 'NOT ORDERED'. I was given 2 Tylenol and a basin to vomit in. After hours of BEGGING for my usual after surgery meds I gave up. I got dressed and left the neuro ward in the middle of the night and hitch hiked home. I now have terrible anxiety and panic attacks even driving past this hospital on the bus. This is but one of the bad experiences I have endured post surgery. There are kind nurses who were born to be nurses and others who are in the wrong profession.

Thank you for this. I have been putting off gall bladder surgery for years and at least 2 days of every week I am in horrendous pain, and am so limited as to what I can eat. I know the consequences of not having it out now outway the risk of surgery but am absolutely terrified. I know that there are a team of specialists in the theatre with you who don't want anything to happen to you, so my brain says nothing to fear, but body etc goes into melt down, high BP shaking, panic attacks on theatre trolley etc you name it. I had breast cancer and had several surgeries including reconstuctive surgery and only had one bad recovery, so logically I know the odds are my coming through OK but still the fear takes over.......fear is a horrible thing especially when you NEED surgery.

Another great video, I must be an oddball as I look to the result of being pain-free and just as importantly tablet/medication free. Would have loved to see a video of my operation. Had a recent colonoscopy and was fascinated to watch the screen during the procedure.

It’s hard to surrendered to the process when I have trust issues and I don’t trust anyone especially the doctors my appointment is in less then a hour someone help

I'm 42 and having a hip replacement in a month. I've known this would happen since i was a child after having Perthes disease, but now that I've got a date scheduled the anxiety is hitting me harder than I expected. I think the trauma from childhood surgery and what i went through has come rushing back and I'm so nervous. I know logically it will be ok, but it's so very daunting.
