Does gum disease increase the risk of hip infection?

A recent trip to the hygienist made me think about the importance of good oral hygiene when it comes to hip surgery. There is an association between gum disease and the risk of infection of a hip replacement. I'll discuss this and put it in context. We'll also have a look at the guidelines for taking antibiotics if you have dental work done after hip replacement surgery. Don't be tempted to do what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away when he had toothache...!

It's interesting to see current guidelines. Back in the 80's, all our patients were given prophylactic antibiotics for dental treatment. Having said that, all hip replacement patients were seldom discharged until 14 days post op. Good old days and a brilliant boss!

How times change. Day case hip surgery is routine in the US!
