A recent trip to the hygienist made me think about the importance of good oral hygiene when it comes to hip surgery. There is an association between gum disease and the risk of infection of a hip replacement. I'll discuss this and put it in context. We'll also have a look at the guidelines for taking antibiotics if you have dental work done after hip replacement surgery. Don't be tempted to do what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away when he had toothache...!
