Years ago I was horribly depressed to the point of being suicidal and a co-worker who was a nurse said that it wasn't depression if I was still going to work. That made me feel even worse. Thank you for being willing to share your experience, which I am sure wasn't easy. I'm sure there are people out there struggling that might not have the support they need or don't feel like they should take the time for themselves that can now see a light at the end of the tunnel because a housecleaning expert took the time to share. 😘

I'd say that nurse probably shouldn't be a nurse. Just because someone shows up to work doesn't mean they can't be depressed or suicidal. I've felt that way for years. I still needed a paycheck. And you really don't want people to know you think of driving off every bridge you pass on the way to work.

Oh no, what a sad story to be horribly depressed and have a nurse misdiagnose it from a distance. Did you finally figure out what was at the root of the issue? And how are you doing now? Thanks for watching, and for joining the conversation. 🤗

You are so right, Angela, about systems! When I was 42, my little girl, age 6, died after a short illness. It was totally unexpected! At the time, I had a mother living with me with dementia, a father nearby with Parkinson's, and 2 aunts with serious heart conditions. PS I was an only child , so everyone depended on me! ..It was brutal and my health failed from all the stress. However, the fact that I had to care for my mother and family, as well as, a surviving 3 year old kept my sanity long enough to eventually become whole again! I had to get up, keep house, care for my family,....I had no choice....But, it got me out of bed in the morning and made me function....I would never want to relive those 10 years of my life again. Nor wish it on anyone else. Through your pain, you have developed logic and compassion. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

Thank you for responding. I was raised in a very dysfunctional family, starting with our mother, of back stabbers, liars and trouble makers and as the oldest of 5 at 71, I am intentionally estranged from them all to protect myself. It has contributed to a lot of depression. I do not trust any of them. But it is still very hard. I am glad that you were able to make peace with your family. I hope you are very happy.

One thing I would do when overwhelmed with all I needed to do yet feeling a total lack of energy and motivation was to do that thing I wanted to do. However I only allowed myself one KZbin video or one book chapter before doing a task like washing the dishes. Then I would reward myself with another video/chapter before wiping down all the kitchen surfaces and so on throughout the day. By the end of the day I had completed everything that needed to be done and enjoyed multiple enjoyable diversions which would leave me feel both productive and rested.

Anyway, you’re an ANGEL to so many people on here. You REALLY CARE about others…. And that shines through. Thank you so much for sharing a part of YOU/your life…. And for giving people some tools and mostly - HOPE. We never know what people have gone through or what they’re going through, currently…… being helpful and kind is always in style….. and you are ALWAYS that. As for menopause…. Ha….. about through now…… WTH????? WHY did our mothers not TELL us this would be what it was like. Probably because they didn’t want to scare us to DEATH! Haha! Whew! Thank goodness for a little hormone replacement therapy!

As someone who was a single mom who worked and went to college, can I make a suggestion? Tell her that you are getting a sitter for a day, you are taking her to get her nails done (or get a foot massage, etc), and while you all are gone, you're having a professional housekeeper come and clean the house for her. Give her a clean slate to work with. Let her set the date if she wants. Having something positive to look forward to and also a helping hand will be a giant help for her.

Thank you. This video open my eyes to get help. I have suffered from depression for quite some time. On top of having issues in my lifetime that has brought it on, I was diagnosed with RA a little over 12 years ago. I don’t want to take meds for my depression but doing it my way is not working. I do have a small cleaning business, no employees. I know I could take on more houses to clean but because of my depression I just don’t accept new clients. I let things stress me out because of my depression. I don’t bring up my issues with my clients, for example, I have a client who is a new mother and when I walk into home lately, every other week, she is totally not ready for me. Dirty pans, dishes, mail, clothes etc… in the kitchen…miscellaneous stuff on island, dining room table, etc. Lately I just want to walk right back out the door. She always apologizes as she’s picking up. I just shut down because it’s getting old. I get stress before I even walk through the door. It wasn’t like this at first because she worked outside of the home, now she works from home. I just feel it throws me off because I have a routine and because of this I have to start in a other area of the house, which of course isn’t ready for me to clean but it’s a smaller room, I make it work. I understand being a new mother. My depression/stress is taking a toll on me. The ups and down. Thank you again for this video.

I've been severely depressed since around 2000. I take meds, can't live without them. I'm 50 now and in October I started on ADHD medicine and it has really helped. Menopause brings those issues out. My house is still cluttered and dirtier than I would like. I do find though that I can get cleaning done, or tossing junk, while watching Hoarders. Seriously.

This is super advice! I’ve been living with depression for at least 25 years. The analogy of the road signs is a revelation! I’m retired and I last worked at the end of 2019, so I went into retirement and isolation at the same time. I’m a very creative person, so I have channeled the isolation into quilting, crochet, and other crafts, but the lack of contact has been difficult. I’m going to take your advice and pay attention to the symptoms and put some systems in place that will help me get my house in order. Thank you so much for this video. I’ve become a subscriber and look forward to seeing more from you.

I was a mental-health therapist and your advice is spot on. I have major depression so I have surrounded myself with animals that I have to get up and take care of each day. I know that, without them, I would eventually make really bad decisions about my life because I'm fighting metastatic breast cancer and the battle has gone on for 29 years. I often want to give up, but I know that is just a temporary feeling that will soon pass, and there are lots of great times still ahead of me. That has gotten me through repeated rounds of radiation, chemo, and surgeries. And, like you, when it feels like too much to even get out of bed, I tell myself I'll just make myself a cup of coffee and return to bed. But once up, I decide I might as well get something to eat, and one thing leads to another until I find I no longer want to go back to bed. Setting small goals, when tired and depressed, are vital stepping stones to achieving larger goals.

thank you for posting :) I do this too: "make a cup and then go back to bed" and once I'm downstairs there's something there that interests me. I have stopped trying to get out of bed on willpower and then being cross with myself. "Let's make a cup and see" works much better. Or this morning the cat making vomiting noises downstairs! that got me up too. But I went straight back to bed :D Don't give the animals ideas for training their human ;) I hope you have some nice moments today too. I often look at how animals live, in their moments, and try to copy. Or just enjoy their moments. Best wishes to you doctor! best from Anna in Europe

Thanks for sharing and for joining the conversation. I love how you get out of bed and give the day a chance. Sure, you can always go back to bed, but what happens if you get sidetracked while you're up and you stumble into something magnificent to do for the day? Every day when I get up, I long for more sleep - but I tell myself I'll squeeze in a nap later, and sometimes I do. But once I'm up and in the middle of something productive, I'm so glad I got up and got going. 🤗

Good Lord, this is what I needed to hear lbvs. I actually got out of my depressive episode yesterday. Did dishes, cleaned my pool, and used some weed killer. I'm so thankful that I have a husband who understands I have these episodes. When I was a teen (32 now) I was diagnosed with Major Depression. I was on anti depressants for a year or 2, but it didn't work for me, so I decided to stop taking them (it was Zoloft). Then I met my husband in high school and he was sort of my medication. I didn't think of my depression when I was with him, I was just me and I loved it. It's probably not healthy to think like that, but that's how it is and it's how I cope. I get up every morning (4:30 am) with him, make his and my coffee, ask him if he wants anything to eat, and set him off with a goodbye kiss. With this video (and your clean through depression video), you've earned my subscribe. Thank you for sharing your story. ❤

Amazing life testimony. I can relate to everything you said. Only I ignored ALL the warning signs because if fear. I went off the cliff. It was and has been catastrophic. Wow...thank you for sharing...I came out of extreme child abuse by my mother..I had to take over at 14 and STILL got abuse.. attracted crazies, and 3 out of 4 siblings turned out as abusive as my mother. I ended up in poverty due to MAJOR thefts and savagery by those I made huge sacrifices for.. Then fell in a manhole do to criminally negligent employer..7 years recovery ..hung out to dry... Finally well enough to try to recover damages and thefts..I got hit with Hurricanes Katrina/ Rita back to back... 14 years drifting FEMA trailers to public housing.. Joblessness due to disasters..finally gave up..took pitiful retirement at 62 to try to survive.. I functioned ONLY for my pets..as the long term pets went one by one I got deeply depressed...and severe weather brought back crippling... I keep trying and falling back... You are HUGELY inspiring..THANK YOU! I did really well the last couple of weeks but was getting stressed again with worry about the future... This was a big help to me right now. There are some studies out that show brain inflamation can be an important part of being depressed. If you don't eat right get enough sleep and get exercise etc. You can add to the stress you are going through and you go down hill. It all fits. Thanks so much you have helped me a lot. I am watching a video here in 7/2022 of a fellow that was going on homes of people with cats in New York City. And he was amazed at what he discovered in some homes. One of the most profound was a lady who was a corporate person. Extremely sharp. Extremely professional. And when he came into her home while she was at work to take care of the cats, there were clothes strewn all over the place. Dishes piled up. You know seriiys clutter. And she was a high-functioning. depressed person. And I totally got it. Now I am retired and still doing my best but it really happened..

A friend of mine shared this video with me this morning, 7 a.m., and I now feel... validated, I think is the wrong word, or perhaps somehow seen. On September 25th my father died after a painful illness, and we then went to Ohio to bury him on a Monday. I was so raw. We drove home and five days later my dog was hit by a car and I was carrying her body into the crematorium. I just felt blindsided by God, like I'd been hit below the belt. It 's now the Monday before Thanksgiving and I've been feeling like I wish that I could just sleep through this week and wake up when it is over. Your video has given me HOPE, Acknowledgement, and a PLAN. In our family, everything is fake, we fake "fine", we fake "happy", etc. I've decided to take your advice about my feelings. No matter what anyone says, my feelings are my own and I don't have to fake anything to make everyone else happy. Of course, I'm not dumping on anyone, but if they ask me how I'm doing I am going to tell them the truth, that I'm working my way through the grief process and I really appreciate their prayers and friendship. I'm not going to invalidate them by faking like I'm somehow happy right now. And you're 100% right about diet and everything else. Nail on the head. I'm going to try to be my own best friend for the first time in my life and nurture myself; I'm the only one here to do it and one is enough.

Hi Nate, I love that you joined us here today. You're in a magical place - wanting to change the living situation and feeling the full-on effects of not doing it. Instead of cleaning a whole room - pick one item, drinks, for example. Pick all the cups, mugs, water bottles, and cans from one room and wash or toss them. Go to the next room if you are able and gather all the drinks there. Do the same washing or tossing. Go to the next room. If you only make it through one room, that is okay. But you will start a domino-chain reaction where every room you go in you will start to see drinks - they will be highlighted and pop out at you - and you will know what to do. It's a great way to start without too much overwhelm and without creating bigger piles without knowing what to do with them. You've got this. I'm here rooting for you. 👏👏👏

I recently quit smoking through a CBT program. I discovered one of the reasons I smoked is what they call a lack of certainty. Smoking basically hijacks your dopamine system. Just completing a task gives a shot of dopamine. Walking gives you a shot of dopamine. So it’s not just the confidence it gives you, it is an actual physical response. The structure is really important. The bad news and the good news is now I have to face those things I’ve been trying to escape. It’s a process. I may not get my dopamine system straightened out for a few more months. In the meantime that structure even a small one provides a base and that healthy shot of confidence. It really works!

That was amazing. Thank you (again). I am reminded of the daily exercise I did whenever… a romance bombed😞. I did cut back on sugar years ago due to too many weird aches and also due to family Diabetes. I was/am also really hyper-energetic, when post-sugar, not unlike coffee. It never occurred to me that sugar might also help me to feel tired🚶🏽‍♀️. Pasta, for sure, makes me feel tired. And… I find that carbs during the DAY ONLY has been truly helpful. As a result, I go to bed earlier which helps with the (Advanced ADHD) fatigue and, certainly, I wake☀️up earlier too. (This all has to be planned, of course.) Still… The fact that you were able to deal with such a profound depression AND have employees rely on you at the same time boggles the mind😱. Perhaps, this fact was helpful to you too? I mean, I shouldn’t need a bad romance to remember to do daily soul-saving🧘🏽‍♀️ exercise…. SIGH. Need to have it regularly in place. Thank you🙏🏽 again so much for the valuable reminder. Cheers.

Thank you so much for making this video. There's some really great advice here. Paying attention to the early warning signs is something I've never done because I didn't know that was a thing. Now I see, there really are some subtle changes in behaviour and thinking patterns that happen for a few days before the depression gets really bad. So taking action in the early stages will help! Also, being your own best friend sounds like a major key. If we can be our own soft place to fall, we won't have that constant self pressure to perform to others' standards. Being sweeter to ourselves mentally and emotionally, I'm sure would make a huge difference in depression levels. I'm certainly very hard on myself and that needs to change. Lastly, thank you Angela, for being vulnerable and sharing your life experience. I realise you're not a psychologist, but you're really helping a lot of people.

I started crying when I realised you were describing me! I’ve found THE NEW TAPE, I will listen to it tonight. I hope you don’t mind me writing - I’m 66, 30 years ago I was diagnosed with CFS/Fybromyalgia. It had devastated my life from what it used to be. Cut a long story short it has caused my depression. I used to have a high powered job, exercise daily p, had a great social life until this condition took it away. Now I spend a lot of time in bed sleeping. I really want to change how I feel, I can’t change the fact that I have CFS, but there must be more to my life than this. I feel I have no purpose in life. I have never written this down before. Angela, here's a smooth for you to try, and modify to your liking. All in a blender. 1/2 cup oatmeal, 2 or 3 bananas(i keep a stash in freezer, peel n freeze if they start to go bad, 1/2 cup blue berry's (or frozen berry's mix) almonds, walnuts, 1 or 2 cups of water, (depends on what you want) this makes enough for 2 breakfasts for me. I change it up from time to time, but I also add collagen/protein powder. This gives me my healthy sweet treat.

Great advice. I think it would be useful if learning to be your own best friend is by practicing self compassion. It's in my opinion a great way to start an untangling life with high functioning depression.

I've struggled with PMDD having cyclical depression from my hormone swings. It's no joke. If you realize from your own experience that teens seem to lose their minds during puberty, you know hormones are almost like a drug. I finally got some help taking progesterone only birth control called Slynd. I can't believe it's taken me this long to figure it out. I did counseling and antidepressants and it just wasn't the right treatment. If the mood swings are cyclical for anyone reading this, definitely investigate it. Great video!

Progesterone saved my life too! In Europe the brand is Utrogestan which is not birth control, just the hormone in the exact form it exists in humans. No side effects thusly! And there's prog. cream, which is over the country, for the little wobbles.

You outdid yourself. This is such a Wonderful, Huge, Warm, Hug. Thank you So Very Much. You are full of Wisdom. You did go through those things in vain. You are helping so many people. Even if you only help a handful, even part of this video is OUTSTANDING. You explained it, that even people who are not fluent in English could understand. I will review this video religiously. On days I am well to consciously make this catch me strategies. On days I am not well, to know that I am not alone, and it can be overcome even when I am overwhelmed. Thank you. 😊 Thank you 😊 ❣️💕❤️‍🔥✨️💝😭🎉 you are a Super Hero to many.

Very good advise, to me it’s mostly thoughts anxiety, negative thoughts that keep coming up that makes me feel down. I think I need to socialize more to feel better, thank u for what u are doing!!

I like to socialize, because I like the feel of connection to another kind human. I socialize one on one mostly. Coffee with the neighbour. Talk to the old fashioned greengrocer. For the thinking I am in autistic therapy, because my logical approach to life is not efficient/happy making. It turns out you can also approach life in moments and/or in feelings and/or in how the body reacts (in non-language). It's fascinating. And my thinking also carries a lot of judgements and shoulda's that I picked up from my upbringing and I can shed if I want to. Just want to tell you I am much freeer than I thought I was and maybe you are too. I wish much freedom and peace for you :)

Thank you Angela, for your attention and compassion for those of us suffering from depression. I have struggled with this most of my life, I dealt with it with exercise, eating as best as possible, but menopause really kicked the life out of me. I lost track of whatever system I had and just languish now. I have therapists, medication, although my fabulous doctor of the last 15 years just up and retired. Going through the loss of several relatives, both our cats, daughter having a breakdown, parent developing dementia, husband retiring, I am not even able to get back up to feeling lousy. Nevertheless, I truly appreciate your advice on cleaning as well as so many other subjects that can be applied to a number of life circumstances. I have recommended your videos to a number of young women who I know will benefit greatly from your always positive answers.❤️

It WAS depression that you had!! Some people can work & some can’t. Luckily I was able to take Time off, but some people can’t do that. So many people are in denial about depression. Depression is a DISEASE, just like diabetes or the common cold. But it is treatable!! For the cleaning lady who was betrayed by her sister AND her boyfriend-I had something like that with a”close”(?) friend. All I can say is, what goes around comes around!!

Thanks Lynn for the kind words. My fiance ended up being a really nice guy, just not the best fit for me. I didn't see it at the time and I wasn't the person I was supposed to be heading into marriage. Had I married him we would surely be divorced because as we grew up, we both grew worlds apart. The universe and the good Lord took care of me on that one. 🙏🤗🙏

If you are cleaning with high functioning depression, I would say you are doing a _lot_ better than those with zero/low functioning depression where there is _no_ cleaning being done.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
It's true there are different levels of depression and the capabilities of a person will depend on a variety of other factors from the amount of sleep one has, their diet, their exercise, their commitments, their hormones, their cognitive function, their life experience, their environment. 👍

@@AskAngelaBrown Thank you for your reply Angela, you are helping all of us. I agree and an important factor is also the level of apathy one feels. Sometimes, regardless of other factors, there can be varying levels (and often inexplicable) levels of apathy which are very hard to understand if one doesn't suffer from clinical depression.
