Dr. Lisa, wonderful presentation, I really like how you were able to make light of things and getting your point across. I admire you for educating those who don't understand. We need more medical professional like you. Keep up the great work.

Hey Tree students, if Mr. Cousens uses this same video again next year (or if you're just now doing it this year), just copy this comment and save yourself some time. 1. According to the speaker, what is health literacy? The ability to understand and use health information 2.a) What is the impact of low health literacy on the economy? It causes people to spend more on healthcare 2.b) According to the speaker, how much is spent annually because of low health literacy and why? It costs people 106-238 billion annually because they only pay attention to healthcare when they get sick or hurt. 3. What is hypertension (you may need to look this up)? High blood pressure 4. How is the flu spread (you may need to look this up)? It is transmitted through the air by, coughing, talking, or sneezing 5. What is diabetes (you may need to look this up)? The inability to produce insulin or producing too little insulin 6. Where, specifically, are the kidneys located (you may need to look this up)? Directly below the ribcage 7.a) Do you think you need to call an ambulance for a migraine? No 7.b) What is a migraine? A headache 8. According to the speaker, what are some of the positives and negatives associated with the grapevine? Negative- message can get changed accidentally, lots of false information Positive- effective at transmitting information 9. In the presentation the speaker uses an Ebola outbreak as a teaching example. However, as it relates to COVID: a) What are some examples of good information shared on the grapevine? Eat health foods you don’t like since you can’t taste them, lay on stomach to help breathing b) What are some examples of bad/misinformation shared on the grapevine? Taking bleach/horse dewormer to cure covid, antivax 10. At 5:56 Dr. Lisa shares a list of illnesses/health conditions that health literate people should know. Define 5 of the 11 conditions, and feel free to use some independent research if need be. Flu- influenza, a common disease Pill- medication in tablet form Jaundice- a medical condition in which the skin turns yellow Anemia- a lack of blood cells which can cause fatigue Fatigue- feeling tired/having low energy 11. Why does health literacy matter? What’s the cost benefit? For every dollar spent on health literacy, you will save $20 on healthcare. 12. According to Dr. Lisa, what are 4 things that could be done to help improve awareness of health literacy? Manage the grapevine, have doctors embrace technology, avoid gaps in care, and find a doctor who works with you. 13. After watching this Tedx, from your own personal perspective, why is health literacy important? It can save money and help you be healthier.

One of the best Ted Talks I've seen. It's amazing how little we know about our bodies, and this has to change.

Might be commenting a bit late to get a response, but how do we consider the implications of dual use information (research that could potentially be used against us) when it is presented to the entire public? The strongest example of this I have seen is when there was a study that showed how botulism can be created in milk, but there were fears of this knowledge being weaponized. Thank you for your information, and I completely agree with everything you said.
