This video is a stark contrast to the other painting videos I see. Base layer, highlight, next layer, highlight, 20th layer, wash, highest highlight. Never ends. Thanks for making it simple.

A lot of painting videos focus on pushing 1 model to a very high standard, like a showpiece or a bust etc. Army painting is a different ball game. Focus on quick gradients and high contrast and you'll get very pleasing results when on the table.

Many other videos are made by golden demon winners or competitive painters and it shows but think on it as tools in a toolbox 😉 This is a nice minimum but would get boring quickly if it was the only thing everyone made videos on.

Big fan of the "paint all first, improve later". A full painted army looks epic, even if there are "messy" paint jobs, then painting characters and other minis up after as centre peices feels like the cherry on top of the cake! Great video

Some good tips in here. It's always refreshing these kind of videos aimed at the absolute beginner. Painting can be intimidating to people new to it, so this is a great starter for them. I'm a big believer in the three foot rule for tabletop models

It's nice to see that the way I paint is a legitimate speed painting technique too! I go from blocking/basecoating (with a little drybrushing here and there) to slapping on a shade onto the model to finish it. Agrax Earthshade and Seraphim Sepia can do wonders for a miniature

Im not the best painter. Washes and a good base really are my main two cheats to make a bad paint job look good. But doing the bare minimum can sometimes be a good idea. I remember watching Midwinter Minis paint up a whole Eldar Start Collecting using basically 5 colours. A blue base and then 2 dry brush coats with blue which got progressively greener. Then black details and white helmet. He did an amazing trick, too with nail glitter on the helmets. I copied that scheme and painted up a start collecting + a Falcon Grav Tank and 10 Guardians. Only I couldn't get the glitter trick to work so mine have plain white helmets. But for saying how simple they were to paint, they are some of my favourite paint jobs to date. Simple, easy but effective. Good video dude. It can be hard to motivate yourself to paint so quick schemes like these are great

I find contrasts don't show patchyiness as much if you undercoat black, then dry brush grey, then an edge/top angled dry brush white. The gradient that shows through helps hide the pooling or patchy parts. I used to just do the base coat and wash, very quick, but i"d do one extra step after a super messy fast base coat i'll just batch neaten each colour one at a time before the wash.

To the point where I've missed playing games with friends because I can't bear to clip, clean, file, glue; etc. Any tips or tricks to make this chore less terrible? I've got piles of stuff I'd love to paint and play with, but I end up doing other stuff because the models have to be put together.

Exacto blade #11 in a more comfortable off brand holder. If you want quick assemble first, clear mold lines that are exterior and visible fast. If not comfortable with the sharpness, use the blunt side (back of the blade and a bit more force) Get a professional made for purpose sharp on one side, blunt on the other clippers for cutting from sprues. It will cut more neatly, cleanly and with less risky push that sends tiny plastic bits flying. Also cut far from the model, then once off the sprue cut gradually closer with the clippers, this will reduce gouging of the plastic. Tamiya sanding sponges or similar products, you can get these cut them to any shape or size you like with scissors (this also sharpens the scissors) on mold lines or dodgy looking edges these conform to a small shaped piece (like the curve of a space marines shoulder pad) and help you clear off mould lines or imperfections with less effort or finger risk from a blade. You can also wet the sanding side with water to avoid dust and sand resin miniatures safely. (Just have a glass of water next to you, to put your fingers in and keep the sanding side of the sponge damp) Use Tamiya extra thin glue, buy it in bulk for the cheapest price. When one bottle is about a quarter empty from use, cut up bits of sprue, drop them into that bottle and dissolve them to make sprue glue. You can fill gaps quickly with the same plastic the model is made from. You can also use Tamiya thin in a small amount on its pot brush to smooth out imperfections by melting the surface, cleans up hard to reach mould lines easily, but give it time to cure before touching it or priming. If you don't have time to muck around with styrene cement plastic glues, buy cyanocrylate glue (super glue) big bottles cheap on Amazon, keep it in your freezer and also buy the activator. Apply activator out of the pot to the part you want to stick. Aplly glue to the other part and connect them fast, this method causes it to bond on contact (so don't mess it up!) you need far less glue than you think when sticking plastic miniatures, really just a little bit on the end of a straightened out paperclip is enough for say a space marine arm attachment. Keeping the cyanocrylate in the freezer keeps it from curing on its own, so it will never dry up. Also handy to have ready to hand if you get a nasty cut on your finger from a hobby knife, as it can bond and cover the cound in moments, it will also be cured by pouring water from the tap over it, just avoid anything cotton! Also get some acetone (nail varnish remover) as this makes super glue debond, just keep in mind it is what the plastic glue is partially made of and it will melt your plastic miniatures, just use it if you get your fingers stuck together.

One idea I’d like to contribute: If you choose your force carefully, then slightly messy painting shouldn’t be a problem. E.g. If you’re playing 30k or 40k, choose the Death Guard, if you’re playing AoS, choose the Beastmen. This allows you to add grime/heavy washes towards the end the process and you can cover up any sins at that stage.

Not really looking for those results never the less the concept's merit is 100%. One of the best results i've had was a earth elemental that i swamped with a 1:1 thinned sand color and immediately started wet blending with strong tone. It was literally sitting in a puddle when I was done but when everything dried it looked like real rock.

I like this comment! I'm a little different from you, and probably a lot different from many of the people who enjoy the hobby. I've always enjoyed painting the miniatures, but never really been interested in playing the games they come from. Not playing the games means I have time to do the best job I can on the mini's I buy, as well as being able to concentrate on only the figure's I'm interested in rather than buying loads for an army. I just wish my limited talent matched my ambition with the lesser amount I choose to buy. 30 years later my paint jobs are still mediocre, good enough for me, but they'll never win any prizes. That said, I still enjoy the process and I'm still improving slowly thanks to hints, tips and tricks and of course youtube videos.

Totally reasonable to expect how to be taught basic techniques and an entire basic set of skills in an 11 min video. I mean if you are such detailed and thoughtful seeker of knowledge then surely you would have factored that into you choice. If you think you will learn to paint from an 11 min video then honestly you probably won't put the work in to improve and will keep trying to critique others instead.
