I'm pretty new to this hobby but I'm coming into it from a fine arts background, so I have plenty of experience painting realism with acrylics and oils. Coming at it from this perspective, I think it's terrific to see you guys experimenting with oil painting techniques in this capacity. The learning curve of working with oil materials can be a little bit steeper than water-based stuff, but as soon as it clicks it's a whole new world of possibilities. Cheers!

As someone who went from Mini painting to Fine arts... haha You'll excel at the whole general to specific thing. Be open to sculpting/painting bases as well as your model. People overlook how much a base can act as contrast. Whether its in colour, or texture. Can also thematically fit your model too. Best example of this, is how well Dark Blue Crimson Fists Marines look on an Orangey/Brown desert base with some Ork debris. Like that is a home-run Cheers
@AndrewFishman2 жыл бұрын
@@j.b.7133 So true, the base can be used set off the entire miniature. A good base can save a bad paint job somewhat and a bad base does little to showcase a good paint job. However, I do prefer to not use any specific pieces, like ork pieces, as when playing against say Tau, it kinda ruins the thematic experience having Necron or Ork bitsies lying around.

Growing up in the last century, I painted military miniatures exclusively with enamels for basecoats and oils for shading/highlights. I found the biggest differences between cheap and expensive oils to be the density of their carrier-to-pigment ratios and the degree to which those pigments are ground (finer is superior). So little paint is required to do most figures that single tubes last forever, so definitely buy the best quality you can afford. If you use an artist's wheel, you'll be amazed at the range of hues that can be mixed from just a few basic colors.

actually oil paints drying is a chemical reaction with oxygen. the mineral spirits needs to evaporate first, but then the paint reacts with oxygen to cure. this takes a few days I think, and after it is dry you cannot reactivate it again. if you seal oils under acrylic it will never actually dry.

A few things to know: the linseed oil in the paint is part of what makes it take so long to dry. If you give it 30 minutes to sit on a bit of cardboard, it will make the paint bind a little worse to the model (which isn't a concern if you varnish), but it speeds up the dry time a ton. Traditional oil paints don't dry when submerged in water or when frozen. Between painting projects, dunk your palette in water, and just wipe off the water afterwards. Otherwise you can plastic wrap your palette and freeze it. Remove the plastic wrap before the paint thaws, so it won't stick to the wrap. Different pigments affect dry time. Avoid cadmium and titanium based paints, and your oil dry time will speed up significantly.

I have always used exclusively oils in mini painting. Also even buying high end oils they are the cheapest to use in the long run. I bought a set of 20 oils 30 yrs ago (no more colours are needed) and i am still using them. I remove the paint from the tube with a tooth pick so little is needed. Use white or coloured acrylic undercoat never black. Until the late 90s or early 2000s oils were the standard for historical figurine painting. Acrylics became popular because of the games Workshop explosion and the move away from 54mm as the standard size. All the best

Any spirit based thinner reduces drying time because the spirit evaporates faster than the oil carrier so don't panic about that. Try not to wash your brushes between colours because residue thinner will thin your paint in a way you can't control. Thing to remember is that oil paints are designed to be used thicker than we're used to with acrylics. But you can drag an mix the paint longer than any acrylics.

One thing I respect about oil paint manufacturers is that they are upfront about what is in there paints compared to acrylics. They list the pigments and oils (and sometimes the fillers). With artist oils you get charged by the quality of the product. The high quality oils have high pigment content and you end up needing less paint and less layers to cover a mini. Invest in artist oils unlike what Luke did.

I had a piece I wanted to participate with in a painting competition. I took the plunge and bought me some oils and decided I'd learn with that piece. Did just about everything wrong - too thick, too thin, started with an almost black basecoat... And even still I loved it. I've been using oils with most of the models I've done since then. I think they're the better medium for new painters. You can make mistakes and fix them without waiting for layers to dry. You can fix mistakes AFTER the layers have dried. You don't have 5 seconds to put down the paint, you have five hours to fudge about and put the tone you want down. Don't like the tone of that blue bit? Take a tiny dot of green and rub the pigments on top of that blue. Too dark at the highlights? Some spirit, brush the color off. Oil paints are so forgiving, they're amazing.

I used to belong to Cornwall Military Modelling Society, we had a lot of Napoleonic enthusiasts painting small busts or 54mm figures and they almost all used oils exclusively and made excellent use of blending. Using oils on wargaming/display seemed to fall out of favour in the late 1990's with all the pushing of "own range" acrylics by miniature manufacturers. The smell of oil/enamel paints and thinners can be a problem to some, and acrylics are perhaps slightly safer for getting youngsters started in the hobby. In my case, the lack of a dedicated painting space prevents me from taking full advantage of things like oils - I've wanted to give them a try for over 20 years but I'm stuck with using water thinned paint that dries quickly enough for me to pack things away without getting dust or fingerprints on the evening's work.

For me, the inconsistent dry time (even with galkyd sometimes they dry overnight, sometimes they dry in a week, sometimes they dry in a month) and having to throw away (carefully!) great gobs of thinner-soaked paper towels and q-tips after every paint job are a non-starter. Even as a wash, those white spirit soaked q-tips you're left with afterward have a pretty low flashpoint. I have to use gamsol instead of white spirits so I don't immediately get a headache, either. I enjoy painting in oil but I like to get minis off my desk, finished faster than oils allow. Nothing like "Okay I'm ready to touch up the details and put this on the table' only to pick the mini up and smear all the paint onto your fingers because 3 weeks later and it's still not dry.

Cheap OIl paints work perfectly well - but just pop them onto some cardboard to slurp out the "cheap" linseed oil that's used as a filler. (Abteilung and Winton Colour user here) White Spirit (Turpentine) works nicely as a thinner too - recommend getting hold of some odourless stuff. Also use a "base" coat all over prior to attempting to put on your colours - the same way that Bob Ross would or even James Wappel do with their minis. As with any paint there's definite skill requirements - Enamels and Oils (and Waxes) behave almost the opposite to Acrylics (including Inks and Washes) and Alcohol based paints. At the end of the day it's all just pigment floating around in a "medium" and each medium has its own quirks.

Great comment, just a correction however, white spirit is NOT turpentine, turpentine is obtained from the distillation of tree resins and is generally more annoying to work with(so I've heard, not speaking from experience I've never used it, there's no reason not to use white spirit) but (odourless, always get artist grade odourless)white spirit is procured from distillation of petroleum.

Been using oil washes for a while now and quite like them. I've been wanting to try painting a mini fully in oils. I just need more than browns and blacks to do it.

Should really be using a piece of cardboard as a pallet. Let it soak a bit so the oils come out of the paints (need to wait like thirty minutes or so). That would really help coverage. Also watch some of James Wappel's videos. I cringed a bit mate, but it's great to see you using oils! I've been using them to paint up tanks and such and loving it so far.

try using makeup sponges to clean the oils vs q-tips which leave fuzz behind

I’m sure someone has mentioned it already but cheap oils have less pigment. The Windsor Newton you bought have less pigment than their more expensive line.

I love oils, and everyone should try it, but it's got nothing to do with contrast paints

Awesome video. For extra tips check out master oil painter - James Wappel, he makes it super easy for complete beginners/acrylic converts on his Twitch/YT channel. The same with Marco Frisoni. Third guy to check out is Dmitry Fesechko and his "Painting small scale miniatures with oil" on YT. Cheers!

Thanks for the shout out! It's pretty amazing how those have developed just in the time I've been doing the twitch streams, isn't it?
