You’re right, ‘normal’ life is always there with its demands, challenges and curve balls. But having something to get lost in really does help rise above it all. I love being out on the water, away from people - but can’t afford a proper boat. So I bought a cheap inflatable kayak and it’s utter bliss paddling along the river with swans, ducks and moorhens. To me it’s as good as an expensive boat because it gets me where I want to be. All the noise of ‘normal’ life disappears for awhile and when you next get rudely reminded of it, it doesn’t feel so bad. There are no sounds more soothing than those of bird calls and lapping water. Thank you for sharing your walks and wisdom Nigel - loved the ghost story too. Also love reading the comments here. It’s very uplifting.

Hi Nigel. I have had an awesome day today. It started out in a little coffee shop in the old part of downtown. Only a few stores remain open. After that I took my cup of hot chocolate and walked further down the original old cobblestone street. Upon entering an old used bookstore that is when I saw it! Fahrenheit 451! Oh I picked it up right away. The price.. $1.50 I couldn't believe it. It's almost in perfect condition. I immediately thought of you and told myself I must get this book. I also found a 1929 copy of Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life. Well I brought my lil treasures home and concluded I had had a successful day. Nothing fancy or expensive. Oh and I stopped at the deli for a bagel and cream cheese. Times are difficult for many. Some with financial troubles, some family troubles, illness and I guess a host of other issues. Getting outdoors I am convinced will cure most if not all of what ails us. Keep it simple I keep telling those I know. Find a way to trade the corporate world for the farm/ forest / cottage or RV but find it. Thank you, for taking us along to such a beautiful spot on your walk. And remember this: Everyday is a good day some are just better than others. ~ 🌟 Debbie

Thank you Nigel for another insightful journey of your mind, and reflection on living, a slow life. Your dry humour is a delight that makes me laugh! Laughter is a much needed daily source of self encouragement, encouragement we can give ourselves with each step of the way! Slow life is literally just that. Pausing to listen to what you you have just said as you repeat it in your mind, and who cares if you have to repeat it to yourself many times 😂! Spontaneity I do enjoy that! I hope in my vehicle and decide which direction I am heading to, how far can I go today. Looking at the same perhaps but with fresh new eyes! Using all my senses, touch, smell, listening, seeing as you do each time you go into your woods, forests and fields. Lovely Lancashire! I was meant to have grown up there. Now I see why I continually seek out the, countryside just like where you travel. Muskoka, is similar, but for the rock cut. Similarly to the stone walls, dividing the land. My two trips traveling to Lancashire, the Lake District, the Moors, I fell in love with my ancestral background, I didn't want to come back to Canada. I have traveled East to West in Canada and nothing totally compares, with it. Canada is uniquely it's own vast land of variety. I'm rambling on ... quirk I have. Take care of dear Molly, give her a cuddle from me, roaming independent little one! Love and peace to you, Nigel! - Joy

@@joystott1867 Yes! That describes it perfectly. It saddens me to look at our world today and see how technology has replaced being in nature. I am so thankful I grew up in a time (60's-70's) when we basically lived outdoors til bath time. Even though we had a TV growing up my mother did not let us kids stay glued to it all day and night. A few cartoons on Sat morning and it was out we went. We wanted to be outside. Kids today do not know how to use their imagination and society is no better off for it either! No matter what part of the earth one lives on we have eyes and ears and can see and hear the moral, emotional, and intelligence breakdown of society. People have changed.... really changed and I do not enjoy being around most. Enjoy your simple living sounds like you've got a very good idea of exactly what that is. 🦋🌸

Well that was interesting, not 20 miles away it's not 'gob on' but 'cob on'! I have tried meditation, I even went in a Buddhist weekend retreat, no use I can't do it. I swim instead, it's the nearest I ever get to a still mind. Interestingly, I'm also dog sitting before I pick up a rescue dog on Sunday.

We are actually sitting a rescue dog. Molly is a rescue. I got her when she was 5. We say cob on as well. Round here I would say ‘gob on’ is more of a sulk, so perhaps I should have said ‘cob on.’ 😊

I think what helps me when im at work, when people are stressing and fussing, the daily mini dramas projecting their fears abouts whats wrong or whos not done whatever, I remind myself they dont really or necessarily want my opinion or need my solutions they just want to vent, im getting better at observing and then letting it go, as I ve got older, the pressures off I dont need to fix the world and his wife and couldnt if I tried. Inner peace is worth cultivating

I can’t quite remember what wool I used, I made it a few years ago. I’m almost positive it was a Sirdar 4ply. We had a little wool shop in the town where I lived, and I bought lots of Sirdar wool from them. I also used King Cole a lot. It was almost definitely one of those two.

I hope you know how much peace your thoughts and advice lend! I’m a gen z, and your reminders are a salve for me - being steeped in a content-based culture where that content is more and more just sensationalism, or glossy and over-produced marketing in disguise, you’re a breath of fresh air - candid and authentic, exceedingly wise, reminding me exactly what I need to hear without sugarcoating it, and not to influence me to watch your content or buy something, but to actually help and to share for the hell of it, it seems. KZbin isn’t like this anymore, you’re a real rarity. Thanks for reminding me I don’t need to keep up with the joneses all the time, and that not every day is going to be perfect. You seem like a wonderful person and I just really appreciate what you’re doing with your channel :)

Thank you so much, Sarah. I, too, get bombarded by glossy marketing. Luckily I long ago filtered it out, but I realise how pervasive it is to other generations and those of my own generation who are still susceptible. I long ago chose a lifestyle that has allowed me to be comfortable, whilst at the same time prioritising the world around me. It’s also quite nice for a boomer not to be blamed for all the world’s ills. 😊

If you are a Christian, meditation is a little different than Eastern religion versions. Instead of emptying the mind, you fill it with God’s word and ponder on the wisdom of it. Think about His beautiful creation found in nature because God is an artist and has made beautiful living scenes for us to enjoy and relax in.
