This is a great video, because a lot of non-art people don't realize that most artists got where they are through hard work, not talent. This is a great video to help inspire people to draw more. Thanks for making this, it gives me some ideas on how to cheer up my friend who is an artist when he's going through tough times.

So true. It drives me nuts when people say 'you 're so talented' to someone. I find it insulting. It pays no acknowledgement to the person's efforts, dedication, hard work and persistence

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." This was on the wall at my gym. Practice doesn't always make perfect, but practice makes progress. That's what counts.

Art is not about perfection it’s about being yourself regardless of criticism. If you’re proud of projects then be proud. I’ve tried to incorporate that into my life because of a filmmaking career path after discouraging comments from a professor as they didn’t see how dedicated I am.

Yo, I needed this video. I've been struggling with unemployment for the last year, and suck at trying to market my art - mostly due to self doubt and anxiety. This makes me want to go dig up my old sketchbooks and take some time to reflect. You're a beast, man!

I never used to draw when I was younger, to be honest, I still can't draw. I was always athletic, looking for the next goal to smash. Until I turned 41 and I was training for a half marathon when my body started just not working like it should. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that dropped me to my knees. It took everything away from me, it took my entire identity. Lost, depressed, anxious, I picked up a paintbrush and haven't put it down since. I've been painting now for about 5 years and I'm still nowhere near a professional level imo but I do need to take periods of time off depending on what my body decides to let me (or not let me) do. I have sold quite a few pieces but I'm never satisfied with my work. I watched an art teachers video on KZbin one day and they were talking about not liking your own art and then said something magical.... they said "if you look at your art and think it sucks, look away. Then look back at it as if someone you love painted it. Do you like it now? " and I did! No matter how slow my progress I will continue to try because art saved my life. ❤ 🙏

You're currently my favorite artist. And it's crazy to me that at 17-18 my art was better than what you showed. But I gave up on art because I felt I wasn't good enough. And now you're miles better than I am. I still have the ability to make cool or interesting art, but my passion for it just isn't there anymore. This just goes to show that passion is more important than skill when it comes to art

The no.1 tip is to not compare yourself to others. REALLY difficult I know, but important! Everyone is on their own journey, and we all improve at our own rate. Even if you feel like you're behind others' work, improving all the time is what matters most. Everyone will reach the same goal, but not necessarily at the same time! The day we stop learning and improving is the day we should quit whatever we're doing. Until then, it's a process. Go with the flow 😊🏴

I’m going to be 33 and didn’t really draw for like 10 years so this video is terrifying. You’re in a pretty great spot in your life to output a lot of work… You just don’t realize it yet. One of the best tips in this video is to remember that you like doing it.

You are one of the biggest influences and inspirations for our entire family. Your kind words about the girls' work on our mural a couple years ago for your character challenge really ignited their artistic passion even more. They are 10 and 15 now and can outdraw me every day of the week and it's partly thanks to you. You are a joy and delight to watch. We loved the peek at your early art. Old sketchbooks are such fun.

I love this! As artists we are so hard on ourselves and often compare ourselves to others and on the wrong day, that can be so discouraging. Thank you for being brave and putting yourself out there to show us how far you come and grown. Progress is not easy and takes time and dedication. Thanks for the inspirational reminder and lesson. 😊

Thank you for further encouraging and teaching your community, Peter. ❤ My father (who wasn’t in my life, then passed when I was 18) was an artist. Whenever I made art as a kid, I was compared to him. People would tell me “your dad is an artist, draw me something” then look at my art and say “well I guess you didn’t get his talent”. Not only was it hard living in his shadow when he wasn’t even here, it was hard feeling like I sucked and would never be good at something I loved. So by my teenage years, I just stopped making art and focused on other passions. Art always called me back and it wasn’t until a few years ago in my mid-30s that I gained the courage to finally answer the call. I’ve been making art for the past 7 years and I absolutely love it!!!

I used to fill multiple sketchbooks a year in my teens and early 20s, and now at 31 I struggle to finish a drawing because my mind and creativity feels stale. But a lot of that comes from needing my art to be “productive” instead of truly enjoying it. Thanks for this video, it was a well needed.

@kjxxxxkj8 ай бұрын
Hi @themadcadder4847 I hear you! Something concrete I try to change my focus / reduce overthinking: Set a time limit, pick 1 main goal / focus to work on & STOP when time is up (I.e. goal is training 1 area, NOT a finished/complete work/outcome) Repeat again later until feel you met or made significant progress toward goal. Then try to do/create for fun again, or as before, & see how you go. Or swap between training & creating as works for you. Then, or when need/want, pick next goal... Best, keep history/video of results over time & review periodically to really see your progress. & be kind to yourself! Imagine you are talking to / encouraging a friend & look for good, or sandwich criticism: 1 good + 1 thing to improve + 1 good ! Hope it helps! :-)

Very inspirational. At 17/18 i won second place in cartooning at my school's art fair. I actually spent time on my art. I stopped drawing for several years years due to depression and recently started again. My characters are still the same skill level but I've improved my realism because I went to art school and took animation and design courses. You can improve no matter what age with practice and patience. I might not be advanced enough to be more than amateur and i suffer from imposter syndrome a lot. However because of artists like you that i admire, I started putting my art on KZbin and social media to share with someone who might want to learn what I learned over the years. Takes some time out of my week to just practice and now branching into other mediums.

Very encouraging, Thank you. It's been suggested to me that I battle with imposter syndrome and I can feel myself struggling to believe I can do certain art work constantly. I enjoy it greatly though, so I muscle through it a lot and just keep painting and creating when I can. It's pretty crazy to see artists like Jazza and you Ten expressing the very things I fight through as an artist in private but while on camera. But I know you are right about sharing. I see people all the time brighten up when I tell them the story of each painting. It really isn't enough these days to make a pretty picture anymore. There has to be deeper meaning and reason to connect others with what, and why we create.

One of the reasons I took my new job at a "tough" school is they focus on story telling, and use the Big Picture learning program (check it out, it's changing lives for so many kids). TBH I doubt that I would have had the courage to do this without your "work for your dreams" ethos that floats my boat. That, and when I was leaving the interview, their electronic sign was advertising their 7th grade field trip to look at street art around the city... Your messages in this video - all of them - are so important. Thank you, Ten Hun, this video was exactly what I needed in the midst of moving home, learning a new way to teach, navigating so many things. Somehow, your videos help me focus and provide a bit of mental breathing room. I'm so glad I found you, and so appreciative of all you and your crew do. Your words of emotion and persistance are absolutely true. If you love doing something creative, there's nothing that can stop you from doing it except your own fear/anxiety/depression/whatever - and when you push past all that "stuff", the world of joy for that "something" is there for the taking. Now I'm NOT an artist (I spent 30 years trying drawing and painting of various forms. It's not something I'm good at). But I AM 100,000% a crafter (knitting, beading, woodcarving, weaving, crochet). I love it, and I'm damn good at it - I've had professionals and teachers tell me that. I've spent the last 5 years not doing it (various reasons) but that stinky little b*stard just won't let go (I've tried every 6 months to say bye - that was a BIG no go.). So in 2024 I'm going back in. YIPPPPPEEEEE!!!

Wow! Yes! Yes! Yes! I was in education for twenty five years and it was my pleasure to teach art for one year - I’m not an art teacher. My background was in illustration and so I pleaded to be given a chance! Kids would say I can’t draw, I’ll never be as good as you and want to give up. Explaining that my love for art and hours of work was what made me better helped. But it was taking in my old sketch books that really did the trick! I’m retired now and my past students still come up to me and chat - a lot went on to study art in uni! Thank you for sharing your path!!!!!🥰

Thank you so much Peter ❤! One think that helps me a lot for taking the pressure away that my paintings could suck is taking the whole process a some kind of playing. Like… „hey, I’ve never done something like this before… so let’s try it,“ and the worst thing that could happen, is that I learn how something doesn’t work and know it for the next time better. Pushing myself in a kind of playing around mood helps me a lot.

I used to draw and paint a lot when I was younger, and even tried to make a living with it for a couple years. I have always struggled with drawing from my head, I've always had to use reference material. I discovered what aphantasia (having little to no visual imagination) is a couple years ago, and did not realize that being unable to visualize things in my head wasn't a "normal" thing. I also lacked the ability to "sell" myself and my art, and I eventually gave up on making art for money and just do it occasionally for fun or as a gift now. Lots of respect for being so open, and sticking to your art, you're definitely living the dream. :D

At the end of my career now (was too soon due to injuries: my big tip is don’t ignore pain because there’s no such thing as ‘just a little bit of RSI’. If it has an ‘I’ at the end it’s an injury and it needs attention, so stop and get it looked at by a good professional!). Wanted to write a book (partly humorous partly fuming with rage and sorrow) about how to fail in business and lose a fortune (and a house) but haven’t (yet) because same injury that hampered my drawing, painting, arting and crafting also makes writing hard. Hands are connected to wrists, elbows, shoulders, necks, spines and heads and if you have them you need them all working adequately to do most stuff. So, this is to young and budding artists and creative souls: listen to this man and take notes. This is wisdom, this is generosity and this is valuable teaching. Very shocked you don’t have at least one million subscribers. You deserve more. 🎨✍🏼🏆❤️

I realized while watching it that, while I love making art, I was using it as a band aid. I was expressing myself but I wasn't telling people about me. That has just been added to the list of things I'm gonna do in the new year. I guess I was scared for a number of reasons, but one of my personal gripes for this year was not being heard. So instead of shutting up, I'm gonna talk more and people are going to hear it.

Hello. I like your video. I'm an artist, music composer for movies, television, and videos, photographer since the age of 8. Writer, author. I'm always creating new things. I don't criticize my art, because I don't believe in failure, I believe in success, and the ability to accomplish a goal. I don't set goals either. I use my time wisely. I set the time on my phone for an hour at a time. Art doesn't consume me. I also compose a music composition in a few minutes. Sometimes I can compose 3 songs within an hour. Sometimes one. I don't let anything consume me, or my time. I am in control. I'm glad I came through your channel. Enjoy your day.😊

Thanks for this video! This message is so important. I am very allergic to sentence like: "Wow, you are so talented, I nevee could make this!" "I am not good in making art." I personally come from a household, where everybody is better in art than me. And where everybody tells me its because: "I am not that talented" or "I make to less effort" abd also "I will never a real artist." But instead to my brother, I had the passion. I painted and painted and painted. I have not the greatest style and I will not be a fulltime artist (mostly because its to stressful). But I love what I do. And others, too. So kids please remind: Talent or being gifted is a lie. Its the passion you are able to put in something to work hard and getting better every day. Also I will use some tips for my fulltime job. I am a magazine editor. So thanks 😊

Some golden knowledge dropped by a person who's been where some of us are right now! Can relate and noticed some of these already happen to me! 🌴🎭

OMG!!! You were TERRIBLE! This is SO Inspirational 😂 When I was in Highschool, I sat next to a guy in Art class who went on to be Internationally known.. a Natural talent! So I felt Art must not be my thing 😢Fast forward 40 years and I finally discovered the (clay) Artist buried deep inside me! Self taught so I break ALL the rules 😂I now believe we are ALL Artists and just need to find the niche we love in order to do it a lot and excel ar it!❤

Where do you get critiques? Where are the best places for portfolio reviews? Do you ask for critiques even when you label yourself as a professional? Even when I finished post secondary school, I couldn’t convince professors that I was good. I end up doing self teaching, watching KZbin etc. Do you or anyone else revisit fundamentals even though ppl label you as a professional? Is there a specific indicator that tells you that society regards you as a professional? I know I got to work on public speaking. It’s hard to make tutorials if you are practicing them. Currently I make speed paints/ time lapses of a concept I’m drawing.

I called 17-18! Bc I knew where you were going. And the new vm lie on Netflix, Love and Monsters, reminds me of this with Joel’s monster journal! Thank for this. My kids need this. I need this. I used to do body art with henna and jagua and used to paint. I am now 40 and terrified to step back in because I’m convinced I’ve lost it.

Love this. I shared with my 12 yr old granddaughter. She is an amazing artist already, but doubts her skills. Thank you for these words of encouragement that I could share.

As much as I love the message, the AI art in between truly takes away from it. Like I'm sure it helps to not have to pay for stock footage, but dang it's jarring as heck

Great advice! I would add finding a supportive community such as a group of like minded friends or a local art league. My local art league was a huge game changer for me when I finally got up the nerve to submit work for a show. Ever since then they have been supportive and encouraging.

Hullo Peter, I think it is Ok to be satisfied with your own art and still want to keep learning! I have been making art for over 52 years I was even able to make a living with my artistic abilities. I started college with the goal of being an accountant. I took a drawing class for some of my humanities requirements, I just got hooked into thinking I might just be able to make a living from this thing I had done for years for my own pleasure! Now I took many courses learning more about Art and its history, Now how to actually earn money? There were no classes on that at my college!! I did a lot of learning by doing for those skills! I want to thank you for continuing to be an inspiration to all of your viewers and encourage you to keep making Art for yourself as well as for profit! Good Luck and Keep on Keeping on!

It is really inspiring to see a video like this especially now when I need it most, having no money, job, and wanting to give up after months of job rejections and getting scammed out of commissions/art related projects. I love my work with all my heart and it really proves how much I would love to continue to do art no matter what, especially now when I have nothing to lose. Thank you for the inspiring video for a lot of artists out there, even yourself ;w;
