Are You Insulin Resistant? How to Know and What to Do - Thomas DeLauer
There's some very telltale signs that you could be insulin resistant. The scary thing with insulin resistance is that so many people walk around not even knowing that they're insulin resistant. When I was a hundred pounds overweight, I didn't know that I was insulin resistant. I didn't know that I was prediabetic until I actually looked at blood work.
But now in retrospect, I look back at the signs, I realize, "Hey, I had a lot of these symptoms." So I wanted to lay them out for you. I also wanted to explain what insulin resistance is in a simple nutshell. So we're going to dive all into this and you're going to have a clear understanding of whether you're insulin resistant or not. Or maybe you can start pinpointing people in your life that could be so you can help them get some help.
So first off, what is insulin resistance? Well, let's make this very, very simple. You have your pancreas and inside your pancreas you have these little beta cells, okay? When you consume carbohydrates, these carbohydrates come in and they trigger the beta cells to produce insulin, okay?
So insulin is then released and normally insulin goes to a cell and tells the cell to open up so that the carbohydrates can get into the cell. Well, insulin resistance means that your cell has a little wall in front of it and it can't let insulin and carbohydrates in.
It's insulin resistant. So you see the insulin just kind of bounces off the cell. So basically what happens is the cell has gotten so used to seeing insulin all the time from, of course, blood glucose coming in so much that it ends up just shutting the door to it. It's like developing the habituation of a fan being on for a long time. It just becomes white noise after a while. So it can be very dangerous stuff.
So the first one is what's known as Acanthosis. Okay. Now what this is, is high levels of insulin in, and basically the body's trying to produce a lot of insulin, it causes the skin cells to reproduce really rapidly and also increases melanin. So what ends up happening is you get this almost blotchiness to the skin, but more so you get like a redness and a darkness. So you've noticed that, well, I'm not really tan, but I look kind of reddish dark.
Well that could be a sign, okay? Because the skin cells reproduce rapidly. So you really end up developing this acanthosis. So that's a hard sign to really diagnose because you really have to know what you're looking for. But when it's coupled with some of these other things is when it adds up.
Okay, the next up is going to be tingling. This is one that I suffered with and didn't really realize. In fact, I thought it was just the fact that I was overweight and my muscles were fatigued.
Okay? So excess glucose ultimately ends up damaging the nerves and the extremities. So then what's happening is your brain is having a hard time sending the signal, and when it does send the signal, it gets disrupted and it gives you that kind of pins and needles feeling.
Okay, here's an interesting one. You're hungry after eating, you eat, you're satiated, you're full for a minute, and then you get hungry again and you start thinking that, "Well, maybe it's just the blood sugar just rising and falling." Now it's a little bit more complicated than that.
You see, what's happening is your glucose is not getting into the cell because the insulin is not working, right, it's not letting the glucose in. So what's happening is the cell is never getting a true signal that it's been nourished.
So your cells throughout your body are just waiting for glucose to come in, but the glucose isn't coming in. So the cells are telling your brain that they're hungry still. So it's sending mixed signals to your brain, telling you to eat more when in reality you're just packing on calories and packing on pounds because what's happening is your cells aren't actually getting nourished.

Thomas, I first got turned onto LCHF, Keto & IF by watching and listening to Dr. Jason Fung and then I found your channel and have been watching a lot of your videos. I started doing LCHF combined with IF on May 23rd at a weight of 320 lbs. I then went to Keto and IF. Since finding your channel I have now started trying to do Clean Keto & IF and as of this morning I am down to 270 lbs. But today I found several articles saying that LCHF & Keto both will cause insulin resistance in the long term. I am not sure I believe that. I tend to believe you and Dr. Fung as the science you both provide seems to be pretty clear on it. One article I found is titled "Low Carbohydrate Diets: Understanding the Grim Long-Term Effects" on the Mastering Diabetes site. Would you mind looking into that article and the studies it references and commenting on them. If you have already done this could you please point me to where I can see them. Thanks.

I have every symptom, and recently started getting cellulitis and no idea why. My father died of complications from type 2 diabetes years ago. I suffer from insomnia and when I'm lucky enough to fall asleep, I have woken up to find that sometime during the night I have sleep eaten a giant spoon or two of jelly or 1/4 of an entire cake maybe pudding. Its crazy. Have you ever heard of sleep eating? I have not. Once on a road trip my son asked me why was I ignoring him when I got up he was on his computer in the hotel. I told him I didnt get up so how could I ignore him? He said I went to the mini fridge took out two pudding cups, peeled the tops off and didn't even get a spoon I just squeezed the pudding from the cup into my mouth got another one did the same thing, threw the cups into the sink and went back to bed like a zombie. What the heck? Its a bit frightening actually to me.

I’ve always had acanthosis nigrians since I was a little girl, around my neck, elbows and knees. Its amazing to me that my mother never caught on, to get me tested for insulin resistant when I was little: she thought I didn’t scrub myself enough as to why my knees were dark because I’m sure I would’ve made the conscientious decision to monitor my food choices then, as it wouldn’t be as hard now when I’m a year from 40. Year 39, I’m heading to the Endocrinologist to see what’s going on with my Endocrine system. I hate being made self conscious, if it’s preventable. Thank you 😊

I know I experienced so many of these before I started Keto. I didn't even know I WAS insulin resistant until after I started, but these symptoms went away, and it amazes me just how addicted to carbs I am. I'm trying to be more aware of my diet and planning ahead because this way of eating actually makes me feel best, but convenience and laziness are the American way, unfortunately.

My doc told me I am insulin resistant even though all my bloodwork is normal. At my annual physical he says "lets go get some blood work to see if you are diabetic yet." I bring up my consistent weight gain - despite working out and eating healthy - every visit. He keeps telling me "exercise more and eat less." So helpful. I'm starting Keto next month.

Thomas, I want to personally thank you. When I first started my journey around this time last year, I was looking for help. My A1C was a 10! I was full blown type 2 diabetic. I was devastated and I had just reached 41 so of course I was "great I'm old". I was looking for ways to avoid taking metformin or any other medication or complications for that matter. I somehow, stumbled upon your channel. I have watched religiously ever since. I'm a science guy. It's not enough to me for someone to say hey, eat this, don't eat this, I need to see the data. You do such a fantastic job of providing information in a concise, but entertaining way. I'm an instructor by trade so I know how important that is! I'm happy to report that as of today following a sustainable model using all the information you've provided, I'm no longer diabetic. Granted I know the work is not over, but my A1C is now at a 6, I've lost 50lbs, 12% body fat and I know I will keep it off. I cannot thank you enough for continuing to share the knowledge you have as it has impacted my life and and I now spread the word of your channel any chance I get. Not to mention, I feel confident on what I can do to help other around me as well. Keep up the great work!

Weight gain even after exercising more, fatigue, visual disturbances, and tremors. I started to think I was developing Parkinson’s. Symptoms alleviated once I started fasting. Keto and low carb improved symptoms, but it was about a month into time restricted feed riding and some 24 hour fasts that I realized I hadn’t had those symptoms for several weeks. 2 weeks of overindulgence after 10 months of being good for the most part, fatigue had starred creeping back along with tingling. I will be much stricter again with time restricted feeding and what I eat.

When I hit the weight of 360lbs I was getting the sign of losing feeling in fingers and toes; and I was eating every hour of the day; spent so much money on food. When I was feeling the tingling that was it and I started to cut the calories and diet healthy. I recently adapted keto diet and Thomas' videos have helped me make that change. I've lost 70lbs so far and these signs have gone away and I actually don't need to take blood pressure meds anymore.

The hardest part is when you know MORE than your PCP and it’s like “pulling teeth” to get him to see you’re serious about your health. Pushed back (but I won) when I requested extra tests from my blood draw like HOMA-IR, C peptide D25 and CRP. Even my cardiologist pushed back when I told him I’m doing keto/IF and said I didn’t need the CAC test. Said keto was dangerous especially long term. I say “TOO BAD”

I don't have PCOS nor Diabetes but I am expecting a prescription of Metformin any day now. I told my doctor that I wanted to try it for insulin resistance - even though I am not even sure if I have it - but I do have a feeling that I have NA Fatty Liver. I don't have a lot of time to wait for things to happen. I am no spring chicken. I just looked at the results of my blood test from last week - I had a metabolic panel done. My glucose is 93 and all of the tests within the panel were in the normal range except for whatever an Anion Gap is. I had a 14.7 but the range end at the highest being 14. So I am just over the edge with that one. I Googled it but I don't understand what it is and how to fix it. By the way, I am 53, 228 pounds, and 5'4. The only other medication I take is Lisinopril/HCTZ 50mg and I added OTC supplements like zinc, D3, K2, low dose aspirin, and fish oil. I have tried the keto diet but I just don't have the willpower to eat NO carbs - however, I don't eat as much as some people. The only skin item I have is on my right thumb and its been there forever - something called dyshidrosis.

What about inflammation? From gingivitis to plantar fasciitis. I lost two teeth to gum disease and my plantar fascia was being eaten alive by inflammation with no clear cause. Also, old joint injuries started acting up: For me it was lateral and medial epicondylitis on both arms ( tennis and golfers elbow) and other joint pain: from fingers to hips. All of these, together with 40 lbs around the waist, went away in 6 months after I started a low carb diet and some summer yard/house work to satisfy code enforcement (there's a GOOD reason for everything). I really liked that weight since it made me a size 32. Now I'm back to my (most of my lifetime) waist size of 28/29 with very limited pant options. I only started to gain weight, suffer gum disease, and old injury pain AFTER I QUIT SMOKING. After all was said and done, I concluded that SOME smokers, like myself, use cigarettes as a snack/food substitute so we inadvertently INTERMITTENT FAST. I turned into Kojak when I stopped smoking and had a sucker at all times: Healthy ones like yumearth.com/products/vitamin-c/vitamin-c-assorted-flavor but basically, sugar; which probably made things worse. Today, over nine years later, I've found my new balance sans smoking: IF, Low Carb/Keto, and Block Fast weekends until GKI

Cut out the breads, sugars, other high glycemic foods, Toss the vegetable and canola oils in the garbage. Eat better quality eggs, meat, fish and fasting , becomes easy. My greatest single day improvements in fitness seem to come just after breaking a longer fast of 48 hours or more. My single best day, came immediately after breaking a 62 hour fast. Fasting improves insulin sensitivity!!!Take your time and build up the length of your fasts.I plan on doing a 7 day fast in January

Keto or IF are the best (keto reversed my pre-diabetes in about a year), I would recommend is cutting out any drinks beside water, coffee or tea and then reducing the simple sugars, starches and carbs in your regular meals if going full keto is not an option.

He said, "I am not doctor but I can speak from my personal experience" then he said go on diet (Keto) and intermittent fasting It's so so simple Intermittent fasting will help you not snack = less insulin spikes Keto, has less carbs = less spikes Your blood sugar will remain the same By doing keto and fasting with right calories You will lose weight Your body has no energy to feed the cells, so it has to use fat as fuel (ketones) It has to, your body it's main aim is to make you survive It will convert fat that you eat into fuel Resul in less blood sugar You will lose wait The insulin resistance will go away And even if you have diabetes, it will go away You can only have medications just in case but you won't be needing them Again Intermittent fasting ,helps to lose weight and less insulin spike The less insulin = fat burning Keto regulate sugar because you won't be eating sugar What more do you need??? You can eat vegs, olive oil, tuna, bacon, avocado, nuts There tons of so testy stuff that has less sugar Why do go for bread, cornflakes, chocolates, sweets and so deadly stuff, because we are socialize into it There was no diabetes 2 or 3 years ago let alone 1000 years ago Companies make sugar products to cause diabetes for other companies to produce drugs That's they market things Just like McDonald's and the rest They are killing people with obesity and they don't care All they want is your money You get obese, you eat more You get diaby, you buy drugs Why? For centuries people have fasted Once you kill that insulin resistance then you can go back and introduce your carbs Because you will be more insulin sensitive But again carbs in moderatio unless you are an athlete

@@brann6001 I think because your body is damaged so bad by sugar, you would need extra time to get your money back it's default settings. But if you think about it, its a lot better than taking drugs Definitely, Ketos works 100% I dont have an issue with Insulin, but I tried it for 3 months or so and I lost a lot of weight but I really managed to reduce my carbs below the recommendation. For myself, I would love go back on Keto but because I only used to lose certain KG but it's really nice You will see the difference Look, the whole trick is to cut that weight and stay fit, after your insulin resistance will be reduced. It will never go away because any time your body detects sugar it will try to get rid of it but if you cut weight its really the trick I mean look at those who became insulin resistance, they all got bellies. I would recommend to listen to Doctor Eric Berg But also, you need to use IF or Interment fasting. You combine these two and boom, you will see the benefit of fasting. I am a muslim and I do dry fasting (No water, no food) for 16-19 hours from time to time but on regular days I day IF with water only and they I get to have two big meals in a period of 6 hours and boom Again, Listen to Dr Eric Berg is really really god

DeLauer: (Video request) I really like the way you explain insulin resistance. The question I struggled with was: if cells need glucose for fuel, how do insulin resistant cells survive? The answer: they don't. They starve to death and are replaced by new cells that are slightly more predisposed to insulin resistance than the former generation was at their creation. The cycle then continues and the increased frequency of apoptosis causes/contributes to chronic inflammation, especially in an absence of autophagy and presence of the SAD eating habits. Correct?

Or these symptoms could mean your body is not producing enough insulin and you are a Type 1 diabetic. I have been living for over a decade as a misdiagnosed Type 2 diabetic thinking I have insulin resistance when actually my body is not producing enough insulin. Make sure they test how much insulin you are producing and for islet auto antibodies if you are type 2. In my opinion these test are just as important as getting A1C on a regular basis. I have heard estimates that up to 20% of those diagnosed as Type 2 could be Type 1 LADA diabetics.
@my-yt-inputs2580
@my-yt-inputs2580 5 жыл бұрын
From someone I heard online.......if you look down and see your belly you're already insulin resistant to some degree. More than likely. Perhaps the best device is a simple blood glucose monitor. Even if you're not diabetic yet. I was not diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic until it was too late. Most doctors only look for a fasting blood glucose of over 125 when in actuality anything over 100 is a sign of prediabetes. Of course along with insulin resistance comes higher blood glucose levels. And a bad side effect of higher blood glucose levels is that damages the beta cells on the pancreas which then lowers your bodies ability to manufacture the insulin you really need.
