What's the best test for diabetes? How should I monitor my diabetes? The HbA1c test fits the bill for many people as a way to track diabetes progress and monitor how well your blood sugars have been running. There are a few problems with A1c as a measurement, but for most people, it works great.
The bonus hack at the end really works if time is limited and you need to get your A1c down quickly.

Started Dr. Berry’s Proper Human Diet at the end of January 2023. My A1C was 6.1. Checked it again today and it is 5.4! I’ve lost 21 lbs. Blood sugar is averaging 100. I stopped my insulin because my blood sugar was dropping too low; low 70’s - Yikes! Stopped the insulin and it has returned to a good number. Thank you Dr. Berry.

I’ve been a type 1 diabetic since 1970. For years my A1c was high, then I reduced my carbohydrate consumption. Then it eventually dropped to under 7.0. With care it was around 6.3 mostly. Going carnivore and paying more attention to my blood glucose levels (spurred on by my doctor, someone Dr. Berry probably knows well) has recently reduced it to 4.9 typically. Not sure I can keep that up, but it’s been around that level for most of a year.

Great progress --if you eat only steamed green leafy vegetables 100 calorie protein shakes and fatty meats you will probably have a testable morning fasting mg/dl of about 97 to 105 after three days which equals Aprox a 5.4 or 5.5 A1C Boil fresh leafy spinach for 4 minutes, drain, add lots of butter, salt and pepper and some fresh lemon juice--drain in a spinner and eat with 5 or 6 slices of bacon--serve with fresh lemonade sweetened with trivia-it’s a great breakfast and wil push your A1C off a cliff ! !

Keep going to the VA because you need free care, most people do. But, you do not have to heed every word the doctor tells you. Not a VA doctor, but on my last visit I explained that I took my bp for six months and it was normal so I stopped taking it. She approved. I also told her I went off my Statin and will never again take one because I read up on it and Statins are not good for us. She did not approve and we discussed it. I told her my health was my responsibility and I was working on it. When I left her office she remarked that I was one of her most educated patients.

@@madtruckamax3341 eating out is tough. The only carbs I get are from nuts, leafy greens, and assorted non processed foods. Just cook up stuff you like. I combine things I never conceived of before like butter in coffee, canned fish in scrambled eggs, more eggs, bacon and fatty beef. Throw out packaged things with sugar and corn syrup. Liking to cook helps and also cooking up batches and using leftovers. If you eat like that, you won’t feel the need to snack and your hunger practically disappears to the point where you can go 1 meal a day or eat in side a 4 to 8 hour window. Plus watch a lot of you tube and always included Dr Berry as one of your gurus. You’ll find others also. Good luck.

It is a pity that type 1 and type 2 are both called diabetes. They are completely different. I am a type 1, fully insulin dependent and I safely maintain average 4.9% A1c. Have done so for the last 3 years on insulin. BUT! This is only safe and possible with a very strict diet to calm chaotic excursions and the resultant chaotic insulin dosing. Bernstein Rocks!

that's exactly what my Dr. had said for me to just be on a diet/exercise and no meds is that i had to get my A1C down to 7. Thank you Dr Berry for explaining what target i really need to reach. Also i really appreciate your videos explaining a healthy diet and how this whole T2 Diabetes affects me. All i got from my dr. was a phone call saying i had T2 Diabetes and lower kidney function and to "stay hydrated". I was so overwhelmed and didn't know where to begin. My sister, who had cancer, chemo, kidney transplant referred you to me. You are AWESOME ! thank you. btw: lost 15 lbs in 6 days after starting your Keto.

HBA1C. I have been waiting for eight years to have a total shoulder replacement. I have already had three operations. One on my right shoulder and two on my left shoulder. My left shoulder wasn't really that bad until I had my first operation. It was done by a trainee surgeon at a teaching hospital. He destroyed my shoulder, and I ended up with a 3mm rotator cuff tear and all my tendons snapped. After the operation, the surgeon who was teaching the trainee refused to examine me and said there was nothing he could do. I was forced to see a second surgeon who was unable to repair the damage done. For eight years I have been trying to find a surgeon who could do the operation, four years ago I found a surgeon who said he could replace my left and right shoulders. I then had a heart attack when I was due to go into hospital. My operation was cancelled for a year. I had a pre-assessment before the next operation admission, where I was told my HBA1C reading of 70 was too high. My appointment was once again cancelled for a year. When I was due to have my third operation I once again had a pre-assessment and once again my Hba1c was 70 and once again my operation was cancelled. I have had to wait another year and now I am due to go into hospital on September 2023. The problem is I have to once again go for an assessment and I am dreading the HBA1C test. I have been a type 2 diabetic for 46 years. I am on insulin and my diabetes is well-controlled. However, I must be doing something wrong to get these results. I wish I knew what it was so I can put it right. I have seen doctors and diabetes-trained doctors and they are no help whatsoever. God help me.

Four months on Keto and my HA1c went from 6.9 to 4.8 and C peptide was 5.0. Five months later HA1c stayed steady at 4.8 my follow up visit from that August lab is this coming week. This is the visit I plan to “ respectfully” tell my Dr. “ I told you I could do it with Keto/low carb. My hypotension is also no more so NO MORE MEDS FOR ME!” On a side note it was just over a year ago that SARS CoV 2 almost killed me and I had my epiphany that I didn’t want to die being so unhealthy. No more DM, HTN, Transaminitis, reversing fatty liver, triglycerides down from 225 to 76, depression gone, down 91 pounds and look at least 10-15 years younger. The PHD works!

I've been using that same A1c test for a few years, now. It's a great way to motivate myself to keep doing well. In fact, I just checked my A1c during the course of this video, and it's gone down from 8.3 in August 2021, to 5.6 today, October 23. Intermittent fasting, with low carb/whole foods keto-oriented/inspired diet.

I discovered your channel back in May of this year. I'd been a type 2 diabetic for several years and had tried counting calories, eating lean protiens, exercising 5 or 6 days a week and I'd always go through cycles of improved A1c and glucose levels, only to eventually end up back with poor numbers and weight gain. I really started learning about ketogenic eating from your videos. In June my A1c was 8.9 and I weighed 239 pounds. I followed a lot of your advice about eating whole foods that really focused on satiety. Had a check up this morning and I'm down to 199 pounds. My A1c was 5.8 and my fasting glucose was 110. My Dr. was very pleased with my progress. My cholesterol and triglycerides have improved tremendously..all due to eating a "proper human diet". Thank you for the time and effort you put into educating folks like me.

Great teaching video. Going on my 4th year of the following fasting, PHD, good foods, and clean living keeps my A1C at 4.7 to 4.8. I believe that a low A1C is the building block of a healthier life and controlling medical costs. For the 1st 2 years I did hot test A1C and test home test were between .2 points of my every 6-month doctor and lab numbers. Using a BG meter and defining the food that impacts your BG is the quickest way to find the trigger food. Dr Berry has helped teach me what works and what fails. My local doctor was very concerned with one test at 4.2 but after looking at my diet he just suggests if my BG gets below 59 you need to eat. As you progress your body tells you when to eat.

This is the best video on Hba1c ! I agree all the three tests you mentioned give the whole picture. A1c could be low because insulin being produced to lower it. The hack of giving blood to lower A1c is ingenious, in times where a hack is needed, I suppose women of a certain age benefit from this because of their monthly cycle too.

You can give blood once every 56 days (it's a 470 ml donation). They also test for your hemoglobin content (iron). At my last blood donation, I had a 15.6 hemoglobin content. You can also give platelets and 'double-reds' -- the Red Cross has many options, depending on your blood type.
