To be clear the “new standard” AS3001 everyone keeps referring to is not a new standard however a revision to an existing standard. The last revision of this standard was 2008. A lot has changed in the caravan industry since then and this standard is just catching up to what has been an industry free for all for some time. Long overdue in my opinion.

I have read a few of the comments and some people seem a little confused over what the new standard applies to.........basically if your van / ute canopy / camper trailer can be connected to any Australian commercial electrical grid then the standard applies. e.g. caravan park power (unless it is a remote area that is powered by their own generators) This is not only for your safety but also for the safety of anybody else connected to the grid, as a fault in your van may actually impact on someone else connected to the same grid. In conclusion, if you have no ability to connect to the grid e.g. no external 15Amp socket to connect to a commercial power grid, then you can do what you want with your battery /solar / generator setup. Even though this standard is not retrospective I envisage that eventually it will be applied to when you sell your van or if you rent it out, which is very similar to how the Government went about installing RCD's and smoke detectors into houses in pre-standard dwellings.

Do the "boxing" and ventilation etc. requirements apply to AGM batteries too as I am not intending to upgrade mt current set up to lithium at any time in the future I have two AGM batteries 100aHr fed by one single solar panel on the roof of my slide on camper. I have 12v system through an Anderson Plug to the car battery - regular lead acid from supercheap I have 240v plug in for caravan park etc. power access to keep batteries charged, I have a dc dc controller thar decides what to use, where to direct the power, turn off what is not needed and continues to feed the fridge, lights, power points for recharge of phone etc, and the fans overnight.

Question: so who enforces these new laws, manufacturer, dealer or buyer, just purchased our first van manufacturer 5/24 but after arriving home and the excitement and the smoke and mirrors have dissipated,and you start going over van and tightening up all loose latches and bolts on van that some how get “neglected / forgotten” in final inspection or at hand over and other minor type issues, we have 3 x 150 lithium batteries in plastic battery boxes strapped under seating area, lid is screwed down, but that’s where it ends,box is definitely not sealed, gaping 50mm hole to put fingers in to lift lid ect. So to my thinking, there maybe a law to state what needs to be done, but if no one is to enforce it but the customer, removing and double checking these things are to standard,or just relying on the word of a reputable manufacturer/dealer to say that it is all above board,then starts the warranty issues/disputes and out lay to return van to be fixed on the owner ect. the law is flawed from the start.Until this is checked and ticked off at build installation point, it will be up to the buyer to double check these things before driving out the gate, forgoing any trust in dealer/ manufacturer, rant over 😅

Question regarding solar. Does each solar panel wiring need to individually come through the roof of the caravan to fuse each of them? Thank you for the update regarding the new regulations.
@nocopyme84634744 Жыл бұрын
My understanding one would put a circuit breaker just after and before the solar charger for lighting strikes on the panels which does happen, can not see how a battery can leak gas from it when it is in-case in plastic container totally ,sounds like its away for Enerdrive to sell more stuff. I built a slide-on camper with shut off circuit breakers on each step to the batteries and after them put in co2 and lpg gas ,other gas leak equipment so far have not had any leaking from the batteries because there sealed.

Only apply if you have an external 15A power input you may have one in a campervan or motorhome unlikely you have one on a car. If you only have a solar panel or a dcdc charger charging a slimline battery behind a seat the regulation does not apply

Thanks for the info :) I can't see why an individual fuse is required for each solar panel though. The advantage of having a series-configured panel is that you don't need to run thicker gauge cable. It doesn't make sense to run separate cables (thicker gauge to avoid voltage drop) back to the van.

Personally I felt that comment by the gentleman was misleading but ultimately wrong. Lithium phosphate batteries can undergo thermal runaway in certain circumstances. This can be due to overcharging, damaged batteries etc. Tesla vehicles (to name one) have Lithium phosphate batteries and there are more than one report of them catching fire due to thermal runaway. I am also greatly concerned that he considers where the batteries are located is not considered a habitable area. Come on its installed under a sofa in a caravan where people live and sleep. I really would like to see the actual definition of habitable area.

Lifepo4 batteries to Australian standards don’t give off gases when charging they are a sealed unit (so why put them in a sealed box) also they have a BMS to regulate high/low temperature under/over current this prevents thermal run away unlike AGM batteries which give off gas when charging because they are vented also there is no BMS. That’s why Lifepo4 batteries are a much better choice for safety reasons. Do yourself a favour and upgrade to Lifepo4 for safety and more power.
