I was able to get him on my finger but before I got him back in the cage he flew off to our downstairs bathroom into the toilet. Unfortunately my reaction was to just grab him and lift him out of the toilet and put him back in the cage. It put our taming back. I've just been able to get him to come to the millet after two weeks since then.

I'm so happy for the existence of the bird community! I am looking to get birds again for the first time since I was a teen and I was looking at a happy hut. There was one I saw on Amazon though that had a review talking about how their bird had chewed a hole in the fabric and had somehow gotten caught INSIDE THE HUT between the layers of fabric. I thought maybe it wasn't a common occurrence but wanted to make sure and googled it. I found out that getting caught literally inside the things doesn't seem to be common, but after running into MANY videos like your own I understand the long list of reasons why these things aren't good for your bird. We adopted a budgie a few years ago who was so neglected that he was overly protective over his reflection and even his shadow. He would neglect eating and drinking to spend time with his shadow (we don't have mirrors at our aviary), and when he had to be forcibly separated from his shadow to eat or take medication, he would become aggressive and bite people and other birds. It took years for him to recover and for us to teach him to interact with other birds and become a fully integrated part of our aviary.

Sisal rope, jute rope, hemp rope, seagrass rope, and anything else that is a natural fiber (except cotton of course) is safe for birds! Even paper cord is safe! All you need to worry about if you have natural fiber rope is if the rope is treated in any way (sometimes it’s treated with petroleum and other chemicals) or if there were any glues used in making it. And if the rope is colorful, you have to make sure it only uses food grade dyes.
@HK-jb6hi3 жыл бұрын
There is evidence of birds dying from natural fibre compaction as well so you still need to replace them when they are really frayed or you witness the bird ingesting it, just to a lesser extent.

Started out with a sorta smaller cage, not a nice huge flight cage, but not terribly small either. Those small cages can come in handy. I kept mine. I had to use it to quarantine 1 of my budgies. I have also used it for transporting. I am not comfortable with those tiny bird carriers at all. Not when a vet drive is over an hour away. You can also use them as a side cage to explore. Fill it with foraging toys, keep the door open. Let your birds explore it during the day (that is if you let your birds out to free roam).
@kamaluonalani113 жыл бұрын
I currently use my smaller cage as sort of a play cage for my bird. I leave it on the desk open at all times, and hide a treats with some toys, and I change the set up every few weeks. My bird enjoys climbing in and out and all over it, foraging for all the goodies while I work on the computer next to her. My bird's wings aren't clipped, so she flies off whenever she gets bored. Her actual cage is much bigger obviously, and thats where she sleeps. But the smaller cage made for a great play pen Instead of buying a whole new playset.

At pets mart they told me the sanded perch would help her nails and as a younger kid I believed her. I got it and when I was putting it in the cage and cute my hand on it, if it cut me I knew it wasn’t that safe for her so I also didn’t use that. I literally paused this video and took off the sand perches from my green cheeked conures cage when Elle said these were actually bad for parrots 😅
@yaggukult97893 жыл бұрын
grit is actually for softbills who dont hull their seeds and the hulls aren't really digestable so they use hem to grind up the hulls, parrots hull their food and if you give grit, they can eat it and it can destroy their internal organ's walls
@FerDeLance063 жыл бұрын
It surprised me when Elle mentioned that. I was always under the impression that you should always supply grit for your birds. It makes me wonder if pet shop staff would advise you on that. I guess some would, but there would invariably be some that wouldn't - just to get the sale.

I made a similar video a couple of months ago and we seem to have picked the same stuff haha! The only thing I'd say is that seagrass huts can still promote hormonal behaviour so I don't usually recommend them either! Hope you and the flock are okay!
@mariniqueterblanche4313 жыл бұрын
Yes it can help still if they loved the hut

Hello Sophie, I also agree on the seagrass hut. It is still a hut. Birds do not get as broken hearted over the loss of dangerous items as some people think they do lol

My sun conure came with a happy hut when I bought her off someone that needed to rehome her. I lost her to liver cancer 4 years later. I am so lucky that the hut didn't kill her, but it could have!! I had no idea back then. I would NEVER buy one for my current birds. And I just looked up reviews on Amazon and you're absolutely right, straight away I see multiple people saying they have lost their birds to these deadly things! :(
@bruh-hk6tz3 жыл бұрын
This channel has me so angry at pet stores. Everything they sell seems to be for profit with no benefit for the birds! Definitely watching all your videos so I can make sure I’ll take the best care of my birds when I get them! Thanks for existing bc this makes it so easy.

Thank you this video is very informative. I had considered trying the furry huts, rope toys and honey stick treats. But what you said makes alot of sense, I wouldn't risk my birds' health. So glad I found your video before I spent money on some of these!

I live in a senior apartment with limited space. Rowdy, my green cheek conure, has a cage downstairs in the living room, although he spends most of his time riding around on my shoulder. Huckleberry and Pickles, my two budgies, live very happily in a table top cage like the one you show. The cage is on top of the chest of drawers in my bedroom, where they can watch me (and where they and Rowdy can visit safely with them inside their cage) while I'm working on my computer. Since I'm a writer, that's where I spend most of my day. Huckleberry and Pickles prefer to stay in their cage most of the time, so they have company while I work. And they love chattering at anyone on the computer

Thank you so much for all the informations. You really deserve more than 1M subs in my opinion. I am getting a pigeon soon, cause the only parrot in my area(counry too almost) is a budgie. I love them, but I don't want to get them from a per store, but breeders are like over 200 miles away and more. Also, since you are so close to 200k, I would love to see more merch. THE BIRD NECKLACE🤩🤩🤩Stay safe, I love you so much
@angsfeatheredfriends3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you fully research pigeon's needs. They aren't parrots. Diet, toys, cage size, other needs. If you aren't sure look for people who specialize in the species or talk to a breeder. If you know an avian vet you can talk to, even better.

I give my bird honey sticks only twice a year... On his birthday and at the summer, when I leave him with my friends and he doesn't see me for a weak. I guess this amount is ok. I use Soup almonds (shkedei marak) as treat, it made of mostly wheat, a bit of turmeric and doesn't have any sugar, preservatives or food colouring, my bird is in love with it.

That you for being a wonderful advocate for our pet birds. When people know how to care for them properly, they will discover what magical companions they really are. I just wanted to clarify they are not really "lactose intolerant", they simply cannot digest lactose, but it won't make them "sick". Our CAG loved to share pizza and grilled cheese with us.

The bird store that I have gotten all my birds large and small. She has a huge area in the center of the store with the Java tree perches and those tightly wrapped ropes all around so as soon as they are able to perch before they go home, that’s what they are used to. So I have Java tree perches with only those tight ropes. As far as the nails, I use the plastic perches that have the sandy surface on the sides and a smooth top. Even the bird store pushes those concrete perches. I mostly have the stick perches, and the smooth top plastic perches but I do have some concrete perches still for my Amazon but not my little birds. Thank you for covering perches bc now I’m going to have to replace them.
