Are you suddenly wide awake when you enter your bedroom at bedtime?

I often hear this from clients. They are in their living room, bedtime is approaching and they're getting all sleepy, thinking “ok, tonight is going to be a good night,” but the minute they walk into their bedroom, they are suddenly wide awake.
What is going on?
In this week’s video, I use an analogy involving a tiger. If you were to walk into your bedroom and find a tiger sitting on your bed, it makes perfect sense that you would instantaneously become fully alert and get yourself out of there as quickly as humanly possible. That is what your nervous system is designed to do. To see, hear and feel danger, and react automatically in order to keep you safe.
But how does your bedroom signal danger if there is no tiger?
The answer will be different for everyone but chances are it’s because it’s a place where you’ve struggled with sleep so much. It’s why some people can sleep on the couch, but not in bed.
In the video, I explain how we can associate events, places or people with an emotion or bodily sensation, even if there seems to be no logical reason. But below the level of consciousness, there is a valid reason.
So what’s the solution?
First, we have to become aware of the association and then we can use our tools (like Tapping) to create a new experience for ourselves. If we can bring calm to our nervous system when we walk into the bedroom, we are likely to sleep better that night.
After you’ve watched the video, I am curious to know what you feel when you walk into your bedroom. And if you are ready to do something about it, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
Hugs,
Carol
