I think it’s also a symptom of getting older Dom, when I as much younger, I drove the biggest loads of cr*p ( rubbish MK2 Cortina’s) to places like Cornwall (Which is a long way from Suffolk) and really didn’t even think about the fact they may break down (Which they didn’t), now I’m old, I worry more that they may break down, even though there not likely to, strange, but thats how it is I guess…

The more you fix, the more you know can go wrong. Ignorance is bliss! I had the fuel gauge fail to register on my A6 a few weeks back- minor issue, and all I needed to do was smack the top of the fuel pump housing under the rear seats and it's been fine since. You can bet your ass I'm watching it like a hawk every day now though! Is it going down? Did it go up enough when I fueled up? What will I do if I run out of fuel? It's a pain in the ass.

yes i have felt this, but my weekend car i treat as a daily. daily = volvo v70 d5, weekend = volvo 850r manual. the worry was most when the 850r went back on the road. it did breakdown, had to get misses to come out and recover me. secret to get over this, have aa membership, keep a tow pole and rope in the car (sometimes easy to get wife\friend\dad) to come out and tow you home. also keep on top of maintenance for common stuff (car has single coil that failed at redline on slip road, should have replaced after car sat for 12 years and had 200k) that is known to fail, work on the car so your not worried when it has broke down and needs to be fixed. drive the cars hard so you know they can take it or you get into a habit of worrying then driving the cars gentler, the more you drive the car the more you will trust it and the worry will go.

So, my friend purchased a classic Mini in about 15 boxes that has been laid up for 12+years. After a new Front end and a piece by piece rebuild we drove it 3500 mile to Italy 🇮🇹 to raise money for children. Apart from a slight clutch issue on the last morning heading for home it didn’t miss a beat. In the 4 years of owning my mk1 V6 DSG roadster it has never let me down. The boys and girls at the Phirm (VW specialist ) have taken care of the major stuff but I have faith even on the longer trips. Cars do go wrong but not very often!

I have exactly the same feelings about my weekend whip and my daily lol. I have a Ford KA which I drive everywhere, to the shops, work, errands around the corner, etc. Then I have my 225 TT Mk1, which I only drive once a fortnight lol. I've spent thousands on keeping the TT in tip top condition but I still fear every time I drive it, that it will beak down on me lol. I think it could just be down to the fact that whatever car you drive the most you will naturally trust that car more that it will keep going. I'm sure if I drove my TT more often my fear of it breaking down would vanish (nearly lol) It's been reliable to me so far 👍

Dom, it sounds to me that it comes from great energy and responsibility we bring to our auto passion. No doubt anyone who values their work and strive quality gets anxious especially after doing so much great content and repairs. Some issues are temporary livable even if at first glance we do not accept the car issues at all, as long as it is on all 4 wheels it will be ok. I thought that my TT experience would be flawless but due to horrible previous ownerships my time was a nightmare, never the less I still love and value it. Give yourself a breather, for some issues give them 2 weeks to pass and see if they are still annoying or have the same sense of urgency. The bottom line is after a few years as long as we are in good health everything on these cars will be sorted out sooner or later and will be ok. I got this much from a 30 year old audi 100 and am excited to see how the TT's will be after 10 more years from now. I hope my long message gave you some clarity or anyone else reading. 1 more thing, focus and enjoy the things you've already done on it. Sometimes we get our head wrapped around whats next that we miss out on the little things that can be at times personal joy

My weekend mk 1 only left me stranded once, ran out of gas before I was accustomed to the temperamental gauges. But truly, that was my fault. It’s always been finicky as sometimes interior lights work, sometimes they don’t, sometimes the engine light appears then goes off, etc etc. I always have stayed ahead of all scheduled maintenance and as far as major issues are concerned, I have had none. You see, I'm in the opposite spot. My Mk1 has broken down on me a few times. Not so bad that I was on the side of the road, but bad enough that I've been stuck at a gas station or going straight to the shop. Coolant leaks, coil packs, random pressure valves, even a failed water pump! But I've done probably 10k+ miles a year regardless. So I figure, if it's going to break down, then it's going to break down - and that's not the end of the world! I can fix it! And in the meantime, I can still get where I need to.

This video just sums up why I rarely use my TT …. Mine has always got me home, but TBH I don’t enjoy driving it due to the fact that I am always thinking “what could go wrong / what was that noise or smell “etc…. Daft really, as my mk1 has a main dealer MOT and service, along with preventative maintenance done both by me and a very good specialist, as others have stated, must be an age thing.. When I first got the TT 10 years ago I just drove it and didn’t really care, so it’s strange that I think the way I do now when driving it. ;-)

CRANKSHAFT.. and Rods-pistons possibly? i believe i had the one with ALL forged for THOSE pieces) oh my.... how it sounds too.. it sounds Audi RR. no joke CHEERS UP PARROTT... keep that TT running!.. mine is having electrical issue somewhat, RPM going 0400-0700.. LOW rpm.. bad IDLE.. and then CUTS OFF at red light... i took it to Mechanic but he is :"lazy" lol i'm about to drive it to another mechanic.. But Parrott what do you think causes ROUGH idle THAT bad.. and then CUTS off power... but still STARTS.. and it just HAPPENED recently.. this car i had MAF sensor off for 3 years.. it didn't work at first, then i got a new Bosch original part... still didn't work well with it plugged in, so i run it un-plugged according to mechanics too, for few years, losing gas mileage but that's about it i guess. I can now run it with MAF sensor plugged in, it will TURN ON now, but it still works HALF power or LIMP mode.. maybe the SENSOR connectors are bad.. I JUST bought all new connectors and wires.. waiting for 2 months for other mechanic who can PUT THEM ALL in. Just question anybody.. i been running the car 2-3 years NO MAF plugged in now.. been great overall, what could be causing ROUGH idle ALL OF A SUDDEN, no maf plug in 3 years, i had rough idle LAST year it was a BAD CONNECTOR/wire.... do you guys think its just a BAD WIRE/CONNECTOR?
