How close should your Theater Seating be to your Screen and should you go from two rows down to one? I examine my own home theater to see if this is something that I should consider doing, as well as I reveal a surprise upgrade for my home theater with a possible replacement for my Klipsch Speakers!

Exciting upgrade. I sit 9’ from 150” diagonal 2.35:1 and absolutely love it! Before I had 103 inch screen and always felt I was looking at the screen while watching a movie. Now I have a completely immersive experience without feeling like it’s too close. Looking forward to seeing your theater transformation.

Thanks as always Michael :) I know your screen is an inspiration - and I enjoyed the immersion factor for a while, but now I just gravitate to the back row which is around 4m away from the screen and it feels better. Plus, now I get two awesome "theater like" setups for the price of, well, two actually, but you know what I mean :)

It's nice to hear another HT enthusiast mention the word COMPROMISE! I made a "home theater for beginners" video years ago and received a ton of comments from "experts" about how everything I did in the room was wrong, and I've always wanted to make a follow up video call "Having a Home Theater is about Compromise!", but I never did... People act like there are set rules that must be followed, but even in a dedicated theater room(like yours and mine) there will always be some sort of compromise that need to be made for financial reasons or because of restrictions in the room... Compromises are just a fact of life for this hobby, but it seems like no one else really talks about that on forums or on YT... Great video man! I look forward to seeing how the "wall of sound" works out for your room!

And this is why I made this channel! Because it’s for home, not a professional cinema, and spending thousands more for slight improvements is not feasible for people in most cases. Technically, I should remove my riser, bring my seats half a meter more forward, move my speakers into the ceiling more, and the list goes on, but that would cost thousands more to do in drywall work, paint, re carpeting, re wiring, and if I just use what I had, I probably wouldn’t even notice the difference! I love my room now as it is, but I just want to fix a few things that bug me. I’ll have to check out your channel. Thanks for commenting.

@@BuildMontage My channel is about gaming, so that home theater video was a 1 time thing back in 2013 because my subscribers kept asking me questions about surround sound after they seen my setup... So I just quickly made a "shaky cam" video where I talked about some things to get them started, and it ended up getting over 100k views! It's definitely not worth checking out now tho! Lol

I’m totally with you on the two rows of seating mate. Since the kids have grown up, the wife and I sit in the back row 100% of the time now because without doubt that’s the optimal spot to watch from. I kinda feel it’s a waste having the front row now just for the rare occasion when we use them with other people 😕. The Krix system looks awesome mate, can’t wait for the updates. Cheers

Thanks Jase! My kids are still little and they barely come in unless it’s going to be an action movie 🍿 and honestly it’s a total waste to have it there and ruin the optimal viewing position. I think your theater at least you made your riser high enough to see over, as that’s the main issue I have is that I need to lower my front chairs to sit on the back row.

Right now i have a 4 seater in my theater and i was thinking to do 2 rows but here is my wife & myself. In the future I going down to just a 3 seats 💺. From front to back in my theater is around 18’ (5.486 meters ) side to side 14’(4.267 meters) x ceiling is 8’ (2.438 meters) 3 seats I think are going to be perfect in every aspect ( the one in the center is going to be mine 😁🔊🎼) ! When we built our house we just had a couch and TV, the speakers were placed based on that. Later we upgraded the space to a dedicated theater, I toyed with the idea of having two rows but it would’ve been way more seating than we needed and too close in front and too far back for 2nd row. We ended up doing a snack ledge behind the row of chairs for optimal viewing angle/distance. Now we just need to move the in ceiling speakers

You are going to notice that your sound stage is grander too... I moved by seats back a foot and a half after removing a bar that was between my seats and a support beam in my basement home theater. This allowed me to move my seats back, the audio improvement was a pretty big upgrade, imagining and everything just made it sound more grand!
@dalechalfont112
@dalechalfont112 4 жыл бұрын
I really think for all viewing purposes you should stick close to the 15 degrees angle to the top and bottom of the screen panel, this tells you the max size and approriate height mounting. I know many think this is too small for some people but if you use your screen for internet, netflix, gaming and movies you don't want a broken neck and strained eyes. As for moving out from the back wall and having a single row of seating, big thumbs up from me. One row of seats in a 16x16x8 room. I have 7.2.4 speakers in here and there is no such thing as overkill for sound if you treat your room and listen at an appropriate level, but you can't 'turn down' your screen size you you put a massive screen up close.
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 4 жыл бұрын
For me the back row is perfect for my 120" screen. I love the look of cinemascope but I watch mixed content, plus I dont like the idea of the menu system being forced to a narrow vertical height - i like looking at it on the whole screen, so for me, this next round of upgrades are going to work really well I think!

Thanks Connor! It’s one of those things. Michael from KRIX gave me a great bit of info I should have mentioned in the video and that is to start with your seating position first - not screen size. That's awesome dude. Do a full detailed review of the Krix wall of sound as I can't find any on KZbin. I know they are huge in Australia, but not so in North America. I Personally would go with the Krix MX30, with additional infrasonic subs to handle bass from 30hz down to 5-10Hz since the Krix don't do infrasonic bass.
@krixdotcom
@krixdotcom 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rock Steady, you’ve got a good point. With Krix systems, we tend to focus on very high output with ultra low distortion, while still having great clean output all the way down to 25Hz. Much below this though (as you mention) an infrasonic sub or two can be a good idea if you'd like to reach 5Hz, as these subs are built specifically for this task and your main subs don’t need to give up output or harmonic distortion in the main LFE range (30-120Hz) to do so.

Great job, as usual! Upgrades should be awesome! I’m assuming you’ll be adding an AT screen since the diagram looks like the screen will block the front stage? Perhaps some of those oversized bean-bag chairs might help when you need to expand seating and keep heads from blocking the view. Kids love them and you can stuff them away or easily move them to other locations when not in use in the theater! All this of course with prior approval from the wife (what were you thinking man?)! 🤔🤣

6 ceiling speakers seems excessive, especially considering how close the rear 4 are. Also the one row of seats is too close to the back wall. Move your seats and side surrounds forward some. Front stage behind the screen will be a great improvement. Subs behind the screen may be convenient but usually not the best location. Get yourself a calibrated mic and learn REW (free software) and use your Klipsch subs to experiment with locations in your room. That is where you will want to place subs. Since very few subs can produce significant below 20Hz, consider getting some tactile transducers. As far as my speaker layout and suggestion, go to Dolby Atmos website and look at their recommended angles yourself to compare to what is being proposed.

I like that you’re doing 6 atmos speakers although the top middles and top rears are pretty close to each other. Will it give you enough seperation? My back wall is evenly close behind the main seating row and I’m considering the same 7.x.6 set up for the same reasons. I’m still in doubt though wether the top middles would be overkill because they’re that close to the top rears. I like your choice of speakers though!

Is your screen 16:9? If so would it be worth considering a scope screen and reduce the vertical height so a 16:9 image is smaller and a 2.39:1 is the same width? Do you find 2.39:1 ok from the front row with the reduced image height? (Assuming your screen is 16:9)
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 4 жыл бұрын
Sure that could work however I prefer 16:9 as it’s a light controlled room so I don’t see letterboxing and then I can watch regular content on it. I will be widening the sound stage when I get my MX-10 so it should improve quite a bit and feel like it’s coming from the screen.
@AceVPD

@@BuildMontage well, some HT types just need to think it out is all I'm saying A bunch of HT chairs I won't need can put a crimp in the budget. Just consider if you really need a movie theater on your house. I live within 2 miles of a huge theater with Imax,Don't need to build one.

Hi Tony, very exiting upgrage plan mate! Your videos are awesome. I was considering MX5 for my HT and my media room is exactly same as yours, probably you also have wisdom home. Based on my research I thought MX5 would be more than enough for 3.6m×4.5m room, any specific reason for going with mx10 for your upgrade? Cheers!!

Room looks awesome mate, I have a question what made you decide on screen aspect ratio? I am in the process of building a dedicated theatre room and I am torn what size screen to do I do really enjoy 2.4 But don't want to miss 16.9 contend
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s almost done. I’ve done a few vids since this one and I went with another 16:9 for the same reason. Sure scope screens look great but I also watch tv shows so that’s why I went with 16:9. If u have a really wide room you could go scope screen and it won’t affect u too much as u can go large.

Great informative video about seating distance, I know people who built home theatre in their alleys without thinking about optimal viewing distance. Would you be still using A Mart theatre chairs or did you find any other brand, Please comment, as I am looking to buy a 3 seater as well. Thanks. *Krix! Great choice.

Potentially, A Mart seating but I have something else in the works as well. I'll see which one works out first. The AMart seats are great though for the cost and the looks as well.

Is there a sound difference between in wall speakers and mounted speakers. Doesn’t the sound in a speaker come out of the cabinet too. Are you sacrificing sound for aesthetics? I ask because I’m in the construction phase and can build either. I would appreciate your feedback
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 3 жыл бұрын
It will depend on the speaker. Both are very viable options depending on the use case. You certainly won't be sacrificing audio fidelity by using a good in wall speaker however they need to be positioned in such a way that they are as on - axis as possible (aim them at the main listening position) which can be challenging for in walls as walls are generally at right angles. I have a mix of both and both are great for my setup. I like the stealthy look so it works for me.

my issue with my soon to be home is the theatre room is only 3.1m by 3.4m :( and i sit 2.7m from my current 55inch tv and westcoast hifi is suggesting my setup be a 5.1.4 but 2 of rear speakers are top speakers. i dont think thats a good idea not having rear speakers but my room is so small i dont know if i can fit rear book shelf speakers in my budget and if i do i will be sitting too close to my new 65ich tv.
@BuildMontage
@BuildMontage 3 жыл бұрын
Ironically my “rear” speakers were in ceiling for a while until I got the Krix Symmetrix in wall and i changed my in ceiling to Krix Atmospherix A20. Did Westcoast recommend a Krix setup for you? Which speakers? Jump on the Discord server and we can chat more if u like.

The rear speakers are not placed corectly for two rows of seats. Also when you have that many seats you can really benefit from a proper calibration made by a professional calibrated. I found 2.5 m to be the best for my taste with an 120 inch screen but I can literally choose any position I want since my HT has only one seat 😁

@@georgepopescu1327 that is your choice. I’m just saying it’s easy to comment without understanding why things are the way they are. You can say rear speakers are in the wrong position, but do u know I have water pipes running through that back wall so it’s not possible to position anywhere else? That’s all I’m saying… it’s easy to take one look and start criticising. Likewise you should be able to take my comments as well.

AT screens are so addicting they make beautiful flat panels stink audio-wise. Once set up properly the voices literally seem to be coming from the actors on the film. It makes setting up LCRs with flat panels almost seem worthless as the realism totally disappears.
