Excellent mate, what you have done is give a great step by step guild into the purchasing criteria, a list anyone can put together but more importantly the order in which to think about things. It is important to note that individual requirements will shape the budgets of the individual items, and we should always consider our expectations when looking at products, I know you expect exceptional and that is exactly what you are creating, your room will be a reference level, actually the equipment you have selected will give you above reference level performance, what I love the most is that you have not been caught up in the room size, you have a space and you have now tailored everything to work in your environment, which should give many of your viewers confidence that any spare room big or small can become a kick ass home cinema. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Mick. That was the aim with this video. It's all about compromise and making the best from what you have and constraints you have. Not everyone has a perfect scenario or room that they can use to build out their room. My room isn't huge but when you're in there, watching on a 120" screen its great, emmersive.. I can't wait for my new screen to arrive :) Then I'll finally be able to watch something!

Clear and informative. Nicely presented. In my opinion, money well spent. Put it this way; you could buy a Merc for $80k or a Toyota for $40k and spend $40k on a theatre. In 5-10years when the car is up for replacement, the HT will still be there performing as well as it did on day one. Well maybe the projector could be upgraded 😉

Another good video. Well produced and thought out. When it comes to seating position, I think it’s a good and simple rule of thumb that the distance between you and each front speaker should be the same as the distance between them. If the screen fits comfortably between the front speakers, it’s a good size. In most small rooms that would be 100”-150”. A smaller screen is of course also fine and you may choose a 77” OLED if your compromise between image quality, size, noise and price favours image quality or zero noise.

Thanks Jacob. I didn’t include USD as it’s not an apple for apples comparison. For example simply converting the 7100 aud price to USD is still more expensive than what you can buy it for over there. I had to think long and hard before I made the decision to omit. Hope it still give an idea of what decision making processes I went though which are pretty universal :)

Did I hear you correct? You added a window? My building inspector said I had to add a window or a door for outside access. I opted for a door. I also wanted a small dividing wall and they said that would be considered a closet and therefore could be a bedroom and would then have to have a window. So I opted for a electric drop down screen with a 75 inch mounted on wall. Needless to say I have probably watched less that 40 hours on the TV. So I would have done differently if I would have realized this.

I'm planning to run wires for everything I can think of and then run plastic conduit everywhere I can imagine I might need a cable some day. I have one advantage, the theater will be surrounded by attic space on three sides and on top so that will make it easier to add cables after it's built. There will be a dedicated power breaker box in the garage below the screen end of the theater. I'm planning to run a dedicated 20 amp outlet to each amplifier group, a total of five groups plus a dedicated outlet in the control room for front end electronics and the projector... I might do two for this. I should probably also run one for the distributed audio amplifiers, maybe just one for both the amplifiers and controllers. Maybe one more in the control room as just an aux or extra. I would rather run too many than too few. Each riser row can have a dedicated string of outlets for the seats, I think that should be plenty. There will be five seats in the front and middle row and four in the back row. Actually one dedicated string of outlets might be enough since the seats don't likely use much power to recline and I doubt all of them would ever be moving at the same time. Still, again, I would rather run too many than too few. I'm going to have a lot of work to do once the house gets to the point where I can start working on all this! "First pour" is on Monday, I never heard of this before, they are pouring the outer perimeter trenches of the slab first and then the slab itself later. So I assume it will be about a week later to pour the actual slab and then a week or so before framing starts. I'm going to schedule two weeks vacation once it's to the point I can get to work on the pre-wire. It's going to be fun!

Thanks for the content.. Good to hear from other perspectives. I recently finished building my purpose built home theater room after the house addition. Hopefully I can share it on a vid later on with the inspiration you give. I lurked on for awhile on forums and youtube getting inspirations, ideas, and how to. I have built the room interior pretty much myself, stage, riser, false soffits, decoupled double drywalls with green glue, floating floor, two solid doors with auto drops and etc. I still spent a ton even tho I saved alot on labor costs on the room even before equipment so I am not surprised on how much you spent already. Last project of the theater is the star ceiling which I will do myself but I need to cover lots of space. I am still learning and seeing if the things I did made a difference in the sound and etc. Funny thing is I haven't even started with hardly any equipment yet other than a few things borrowed from my brother in law.

It is crazy how expensive this hobby can be. My room was finished when I bought the house. I just put equipment in and ran wires. My first 5 speakers I have had for 20 years. I was able to find same line and generation of speakers that were designed to hang on wall to use as my rears and ang on my ceiling for atmos. Got those off Ebay cheaper than they were new 20 years ago and certainly cheaper for same caliber new speaker. One sub was purchased as B stock from manufacture and other two used from a seller online. TV was on sale. TV Stand/equipment shelf I got at Walmart sale price. Receiver was half price at local store even though they sold online at MSRP. They were clearing them for replacement model. 2 channel amp so I could do 11 I got for half price as a factory refurb. Seats I got extremely cheap from a FB Marketplace seller. 4k player I got really cheap from BB and haven't seen it that cheap since. Besides getting everything cheap/used/discounted I still have a brand new entry level car worth invested.

Hi Tony, I subscribed to your channel a long time ago - back in 2020. Your home theater videos are very useful. We were building a new home and signed a contract in 2020. I always wanted a dedicated home theater so we built 6m X 4.32m X 2.5m HT room based on Sepmeyer ratio of 1 : 1.6 : 2.33. (HWL). Yes, the height is messed up a bit. We wanted to have 31 course bulkheads (same as yours) on the edge of the room and wanted 34course ceiling in the middle. Instead, the builder built bulkhead in the middle by dropping the room height at around 29 course. Anyway, I have been thinking of finishing my home theater project and wanted to know how Krix MX-5 system would suit. It seems from your videos that you are in Sydney or somewhere in the eastern states. I am in Perth. Westcoast hi-fi does Krix systems. However, would you know anyone else who could do complete home theare build? Again, thanks for sharing wonderful videos.

Appreciate you watching this video - my room has changed a lot since this video. The MX-5 may be a little small for your sized room. If I won Powerball tonight, I wouldnt dash out and spend thousands on seating / gear etc (particularly with HDMI 2.1 still rolling out) - I would start trying to design the 'perfect' listening room. Yep - I said listening room not theatre - my ego is big enough to believe that I can somehow have the best of both worlds. I initially thought that acoustic treatment was wildly overpriced (and I still believe that some of it is !) but the penny finally dropped - until I get the room right, the rest may as well be a smart TV and a soundbar in the living room. No such thing as the perfect room, but dreams are free ;) Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for the info mate, seems like it's going to be an awesome setup, very jealous haha. Appreciate your sharing tips and costs, really helps to put plans into perspective. I'd be very keen to know the differences and comparisons between the klipsch setup and the krix one. So many brands out there, like SVS and JTR but not as easy to get at in Australia, let alone Canberra.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks for watching. I have both setups but it wouldn’t be a fair comparison as they are designed for different things. The main difference in Australia is cost. A low end Klipsch system is priced like a high one due to import costs. Krix being local you get local prices and support. The Klipsch ones I use n my living room and the setup is fantastic but my krix setup gives me a theater like experience. I’ll have better data once I actually get to watch a movie in there! Jump on the Discord server if you’d like to chat more.

@@BuildMontage Thanks mate. Yeh, I realised about that :( I guess I'm curious about the finesse of the sound, could you listen to music with the Krix system and still have some of the subtleties and nuances come through or is it really just a heavy-hitting system? I would be really interested in supporting and buying local but unfortunately, we don't have anywhere to try to out in Canberra. Thanks, ill check out discord.

Sure. It does depend on how far the cable runs are. The longer the run the thicker the cable should be. There is a gauge /distance calculator you can Google for it, I don’t have the link on hand.

Another great video Tony.. Reading some of the comments in here it seems a lot of people are surprised buy the total cost. And failed to see that all the prices you have listed are RRP so people can get a "estimate" of everything. Lets be honest, who pays retail? And if you do you're a muppet!! Most retailers are happy to take a bit off especially if you are buying multiple items and bundling. You can actually get some pretty good deals.. :)

So if I break this down you spent $AUD27K on the room (structure, seats and lighting) and $AUD35K on the AV tech including $AUD5K for the wiring? Of the $30K for non wiring tech, less than $6.2 was spent on the ‘visual’ part of AV. I can see a need in your future for an expensive 8K laser projector to match your awesome audio system! That is, after living on bread and water for a year to afford the amps. I have told friends the soundbar they have just purchased is a gateway drug into a very expensive Home Theatre addiction.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
I was just being honest about my setup. It’s not even a high end setup by any means. It’s like anything, it’s personal choice and how you want to go about it. The room cost was included in the video as a guide but the reality is it was part of the cost when I built my home.
@dingbatt4 жыл бұрын
Yes. I agree and some of the cost of the players and media needs to be attributed to the visual side of the equation. There are plenty of examples of $US100K on YT, so your spend isn’t extravagant. For all I know you may have a 1996 Commodore sitting in your driveway because your passion isn’t cars. But your neighbour may have a 2019 HSV Commodore that cost him $AUD100K because that is his ‘thing’. In my far more modest HT set up, the visual (screen and projector) accounts for 45% of the cost, while audio (receiver, speakers and subs) make up another 45%. The rest is players, streamers, remotes, etc. Even so a quick add up of the AV gear comes to $AUD14K. But my room is not a dedicated HT one, it is a multifunction family room. I am envious of your situation where you can have a dedicated room to follow your passion for HT.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Glad you see it that way. As a Ford man I wouldnt be seen dead with a commodore but a 1996 one may actually be worth something now lol! (VT maybe?) anyway I was just being transparent and as you know once you start adding more speakers the cost of av gear goes up. I’m not rich, but done well over the years. The biggest issue I see is people project their own situation onto others so can’t imagine how people can afford things. Tbh my setup isn’t even close to high end. Anyway thanks for commenting.

Been through some home cinema related videos now and soon I will be buying a new tv and sound system (when the new couch arrives I will buy a tv). Unfortunately, the appartment in which I want to install things is being rented and the owner does not allow to mount things to walls or paint them, so im thinking of just putting a 65 inch LG OLED tv (the CX) on a tv cabinet that I already have and add an LG soundbar plus subwoofer. I'm thinking about the LG DSN8YG soundbar + subwoofer. I already have an LG 4k blue ray dvd player (LG UBK90) and do wanna use the atmos or dtsx features that comes with a lot of dvds and my dvd player supports. Does anyone have other recommendations or experience with the items I will maybe buy?
@BuildMontage3 жыл бұрын
You can get bouncing Atmos on floor stander speakers like the Klipsch speakers which have the angled speaker on top. That's one way to get Atmos - I just don't think you get much "cinematic" audio from a soundbar.
@DeMeRkS1003 жыл бұрын
@@BuildMontage Ended up going with an LG soundbar + subwoofer combo because of the limited space, the wireless connection from the subwoofer (not allowed to drill holes in the appartment) and because of the discount when bought with the LG OLED tv. The difference between tv speaker and the soundbar + sub is night and day for me. The overhead thunder from the Atmos demo on the soundbar actually spooked me. This soundbar has definitely kicked off something in me and I can't wait to buy my own house in a year and get a proper surround sound setup

I am thinking on buying a vava projector but the projector doesn't support Dolby atmos. Can I still have Dolby atmos even using this projector? P.S= I will be streaming everything on my apple TV. Thank you for the help.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean you want to use just the speakers from the VAVA? It's a 2 channel setup so not possible to do Atmos. You will need additional speakers as well as height speakers. Do you have these? If so, then it doesn't matter as you won't be using the speakers from the VAVA.
@lorenaeglasiano4 жыл бұрын
Build Montage thank you for replying. I will use a 7.2 receiver, 2 speakers on the ceiling,2 tower speakers,1 center channel, 1 sub and 2 rear speakers all from klipsch. In this case I will be fine according to your answer , I was worry because I thought that even having the entire set up I would no get atmos since vava doesn't support(by the way, total noon here as you can imagine lol). Thank you for the help man.

The projector or display has no bearing on Atmos. Your receiver needs to support Atmos for you to experience Atmos so if it does, no issue that vava doesn’t.

I don't mean to be an A-hole but I feel like you are likely to upgrade soon. Those speakers might be made for cinemas but their frequency response (subwoofer) is pretty disappointing. Cinemas are profit-oriented businesses, and you and I know that normal people would even be okay with a sub that can't go below 40Hz. Yes, they are made in Australia etc, but you can get more for less elsewhere. You will miss a lot on that 25Hz in-room response. But hey, as long as you are happy.

A lot of focus is made around this but yep I’m happy, and I think you may be surprised by the output. My room is small and contained so they pressurise my room quite well. I can always add an additional sub in the future as well :) but I can tell you from my perspective, they sound great!

The L and R are rated down to 40hz and subs dig deep down to 25hz. That chest slap bass is going to be intense!!! From what I’ve heard, krix is pretty conservative on their measurements, so I’m sure you can dig below 25hz as well. There is lot a lot of content that goes below 25hz in all honesty
