I was in medical school with someone who was almost 60, and she was amazing! I feel that we spend too much time worrying about what other people think of us. If medicine is your passion, divorce from your life every person who questions your age or ability to make it. Also, begin to prepare! Take care of your brain with solid nutrition and exercise, and begin to study like a medical student months (or years) before you even start! Good luck!!

Sometimes I think older med students cope with stress better. Because they've experienced the world beyond school. People who go directly to med school from undergrad I find are burnt out sooned and unless they had physican parents it's hard to find out the hard way how much work it really is.

Thank you so much for addressing this topic! It's comforting to hear your thoughts on this. Personally, I'll be 24 going on 25 before I can even apply to med school, so I'll finish at 30 and be a specialist by 34 or 35. After high school graduation I went into law school for a while (pro tip, don't do law if you hate it), failed at many things, worked as a waitress etc, all whilst having severe untreated mental illnesses. Now I'm 23, properly medicated, progressing in therapy, and currently studying chem and maths at uni. It may be strange to say this during a literal pandemic, but life feels good right now, and I'm so excited to work my way toward and then through medical school. All the best to everyone reading this, and a happy new year! 😊

Im 28 and still have 2 more years of college because I was in the military before. I was really getting worried it was approaching being too late but I hear of so many people starting in their 30's, 40's and even 50's and it makes me feel like I have plenty of time. I think with things like social media starts putting pressure on you to accomplish things quicker because you see your friends doing things and youre still studying for undergrad.

I get this question a lot also. I think one important consideration is family life. I went the traditional route and finished fellowship at 31. I had 4 kids shortly after, and was fortunate to have the flexibility to reduce my clinical hours with each baby. I have had a lot of friends ask if they should start med school in their 30s. It's a complicated question, but I think it would have been very difficult to juggle young kids in school or residency. I've definitely seen some amazing people manage it, but it was very difficult. Because becoming a doctor is a process with a minimum of 7 years of med school and residency, it can have a huge impact on your family life. I had to miss important weddings, funerals, and other life events because of my training. However you time it, if you want to be a parent at some point, you need to consider the impact this commitment will have on your family life also. Great video!

This was inspiring! I lost my mom very young and I had a lot of responsibilities and my sperm donor was no help. He put all the responsibilities on me as a woman. After high school I needed a break since I went to school all year round. I’ve enrolled in several colleges I wanted to be a music major but left. I wanted to do be an an advertising exec. But my true calling I believe is in the field of psychology. I’m always helping people in some form or fashion. My mom was going back to school but she passed and never got a chance to fulfill her dream as a RN. This was very inspiring. Now that I have the time and life is not in the way I want to go backs my fear is the debt, since I don’t have any but I can move past that if I know the field I’m choosing is going to be very rewarding. Thank you, sometimes a career path chooses you and you have to submit to Gods calling on your life.

I appreciate this man, after high school I became an EMT (in Detroit mah dude), and I instantly knew I wanted to be a Physician after my first major trauma. But I sat on it. I started a paramedic program, then dropped out because I wanted to spend time with a girl, who I then wasted a few more years on. Now that I had i moment to myself and had a chance to really contemplate what I want to do, and HOW to get there, I decided again to shoot for the stars, but the only feasible way to do it would take me an absurd amount of time, so I was hesitant to say the least. Idk if anyone will read this, but here’s the plan. I’m 23 now. 6 years in the Navy as a SARC (spec ops “medic” for the Marines), another year to finish up by BS in Paramedicine (that’s a thing now). Maybe do a masters in order to get into a better school. Then do med school, or, if I can swing it, an MD/JD program. THEN residency in EM or possibly shoot for Trauma Surgery. Possibly have the Navy pay for that too and serve some more as an MD. All together I’m looking at 14-21 years before I get everything I want. I’ll be 37-44 years old before I start making actual money. Idk how I’m gonna start a family, idk how I’m gonna do any of this. But I’ll fucking do it. Bite off more than you can chew, and then fucking chew it.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think doctors with a not so direct pathway bring so much more to the profession. Life experience and exposure to other areas of work enhances a doctors perspective and character. I also wanted to add that I think the biological and social pressures on female aspiring doctors are different than men. Losing prime child bearing years, for example, is an important consideration for women who may start their medical training later in life.

+Brit Bee A women who is on the ball could be a doctor practicing by the time she is 29 or 30 meaning she can still have enough time to have children. When you hit residency you are actually in employment so you career is already underway at that point. I am a man and had a family to raise but was in the middle of my residency and it was the toughest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I used to visit my mother and father in the UK routinely but during my residency I did not see them for almost 3 years.

Now I want more it’s more of a personal goal I will do my best to get into med school because I will regret it later if I don’t trying doing it now. Thank you for your videos!

I'm about to be 27, never did a single day of college and have no idea what I want to do with my life anymore. I was thinking about something in the medical field because I like helping people. But when I go for something I shoot big. Being anything less than an MD wouldn't be enough for me. Not saying I'm trying to go that route but I'm only weighing my options. It's comforting to know its not too late... yet.

Thank you so much Sir for sharing your story!!!🤩🤩.........I was so desperate since a few days for getting some motivation u know a lil inspiration from outside. Im 22 currently doing my masters and was stuck between whether to do research by going with phd( which is a hella uncertain thing) or to follow my life long dream of becoming a surgeon. Since I come from an Indian family and also being a girl( almost all my cousin sisters got married at the age of around 22 or 23) I have zero support from people around me. Your story gave me immense energy to boost my internal self. Thank you so much again. Also Sir please upload more videos on how to prepare for Usmle and a little info on expenses surrounding it.😊

I am 28 soon to be 29. I have a 6 yr old and I am planning on starting school soon again to provide a better future for us! I was debating it because he is pressuring me to give him a sibling and it breaks my heart because I want another child already, part of me blames myself for not finishing school before I had him but I just have to finish school now before I have another child.

Im 32 years old and I feel old to go to med school. I have a masters degree in microbiology and I want to be an MD. I’m married with two kids under the age of 4. Everyone tells me to go back I just think I’m scared. I feel old, I feel I will put my kids to the side and miss all the great moments. But I also think it will be temporary and I will have a secure future and probably my own business. My children will look up to me and say that’s my mom dr. .,..I hear everything you said and I watched other videos. I’m constantly thinking and even dreaming about medical school. I just have to act on it. What’s the worst thing that can happen. Nothing.

I feel your pain. It's a tough scenario. You don't want to miss out on the kids growing up, and I think that is definitely a real problem. Think about a 3 year residency. Don't do a 5 or 6 year program. ER, Medicine or peds (although honestly peds you don't make enough money). ER is a good schedule for a Mom, you can work like 14 shifts per month and 1/2 the month off. That's what I would do. You will be about 40 when you finish residency. Not great but not bad. You're kids will be 10 ish. Would you regret missing out on your kids growing up between 4 and 10 more or missing out on being a doctor more? I think that's probably your answer. Whichever one you would regret the least, do that.

I’m in a similar position with masters in microbiology and preparing for med school at age 33. Your videos is very inspiring and gives me a much needed push in the forward direction. I’m planning to go for family practice (gp) and open my own clinic eventually. I too feel everyone has their own time line and have accepted that I am starting out late, but I really want to follow my dream and feel practicing medicine is my true calling. The only thing that stops me is my responsibility towards my kids. Just wondering how much a gp makes considering all the debts I will be accumulating over the years as I will be leaving my full time job and have to provide for my kids future.

I’m 32 and I’m headed to med school. Some times you just have to prove yourself wrong and take a chance on yourself. I don’t feel to old to go. I look at many people who struggle to identify why they want in life in their 20s many people decide who they need to be when they are in their 30s, some later in life.

How did you find it?? I applied for my doctorate in clinical psychology and I’m really happy in the psychology field but I’ve always deep down wanted to become a surgeon and idk if I would be too old to do it. I also want to do my doctorate though 😩 so I’ll be 30/31 when I qualify as a clinical psychologist but then I’d also maybe want to do medicine after that so you’re basically doing what I will probably do. I’m just scared at the idea of actually doing it

I am struggling with this so much right now. I am planning to apply this year and, if all goes well, will begin med school next year at 26. I will graduate from med school around 30 and may finish residency around 34 if I choose a 3-4 year residency program. I came to realize that time will go on either way and I don't necessarily have to wait until I am 34 to start a family. However, my biggest worry is having to wait that long to help take care of my mom. She is currently 64 and will be around 74 by the time I finish residency. I struggle with the thought of my mother having to wait so long to have me take care of her in the way I want to. My incentive for going into medicine is not money, but once I finish this journey, I will finally have my first true job that will allow me to help care for my mother and not have to worry about her continuing to work to take care of herself. I would still like to pursue medical school, but I want to take care of my mom now so she can finally rest from the many years she worked and struggled :( Any advice on this?

I know I will be old before I begin medical school. I'm in Australia where most schools require you to have done a bachelors before entry and some don't have any prerequs. I am in my undergrad in nursing, and I chose it because I recognized the need for my undergrad to be a means for me to make an income as well as being a pathway. I have students in first year with whom I work who have gone into nursing for the same reason. because its something they are good t, something they enjoy and something that is going to make them an income as well as assist them in getting into a post graduate degree. This is me. I've met people who have been anything from accountants to bus drivers before deciding on medical school. Since I have no expectation that I'll want to retire at any time, I think that I will go on for as long as it takes. As much time as it takes. Don't ever worry about how much time reaching your dream career will take you.

Vet school is tough because there's not that many schools and they're compensated maybe high 5 figures to low 6 figures vs. High cost of schooling. I've never had a passion for animals but if that's what interests you maybe try getting a part time gig as a vet tech before you commit to veterinary pre reqs and vet school. Send some Vets questions working in fields you wanna work in.

All these people in the comment section are amazing. You give me motivation and it is really an eye-opener. The only thing that is a big problem is to pay for education. I already have my bachelor's degree in Biology teacher but I feel so empty on the inside and I am sure I don't want to teach anymore (too many negative things, your colleagues are your biggest bullies). In the Netherlands, it's a fun story, instead of paying med school its around 2000-4000 euros per year. Because I got my teacher's degree, I am not allowed to study further. So what they did is that if I want to study further in the med field, I need to pay around 19.000 euros per year. And I neeeeedd to pay it within that year, I cannot pay it later when I earn money. No, I need to pay it with each year (multiply it with 6 to be a basic doctor). Crazy right? This is the reason I am not able to study further as a doctor and it makes me sad. I am 25 years old right now and I regret everyday for not believing in myself and only think that I will be able to become a biology teacher. I should've had more self-confidence back than. Unfortunately, you cannot go back, you can only go forward. Perhaps studying outside the country will be more suitable (even though I cannot leave my mom as her health is not optimal so I need to take care of her). But yeah that's life. I'm saving up, doing my extra curriculums to boost up my CV. I am looking up forward because, in the past 1,5 years, life is looking better than ever for me. I'm gonna look at these comments every time I need motivation.

I keep getting older, but with no kids or husband, shooting for pie in the sky has always worked before. I would just be too frustrated with myself if I didn't give it a go and do what I am good at. I just need to get past all of my hangs ups. Thanks again!

If you want to get married and have children then I would say focus on that first. In the meantime you could focus on practicing for the MCAT. Or have you ever considered Pharmacy school or Dental school. You could practice the MCAT to see if you are up to it. I would assume you have a good foundation in chemistry and biology. Medical specialities such as pathology could be right up your street in that your masters in the field of genetics could be useful in the likes of chemical pathology or cytogenetics. If you got into medical school when you are 33 you could be a practising doctor by the time you are 40 to 43 which means you could still have a good 25 year career ahead of you and if you picked a field like pathology you could be active up until you are in your 70s if you desired.

But i was always told that i can never do it, i never have had the guidance on how to get there, never become that level of greatness that many people expected from me and I was never given the best advise to how to get to that point and always given the cold shoulder.... so now i want to go back to college get a bachelors degree and get to med school and get to the point of my life in where i want to be. But i really dont know where to start and how i can get there... luckily i have a family that supports me and i would be the first in my family to pursue this career. I’m definitely being called to this profession. I always had an ideal of being a doctor but exactly what types is why threw me off. I went to school for medical billing and coding and pharmacy tech. Not enough money in it for me. Went back to school for a BS in psychology and now I’m headed to med school for psychiatry. I should actually be done with my residency by the time I’m 40 but that’s life. 40 isn’t old to me. I just know that this is something that I desire to work hard to be. I do have kids and I do not want them to live a life as hard as mine if possible.
