Are you too old to mountain bike?

Can you be too old to start mountain biking? Well if you assume that being old means being unfit, then yeah you can be too old to do a lot of things, but of course we know that's not the case.
Just like people of all ages vary in fitness, bike trails vary in difficulty. So if you're fit enough to ride a normal bicycle around town, you'll be fine riding a mountain bike on novice trails. But what if you want to take it further?
I didn’t start riding with Steven until around 12:30, and by then he had ridden the whole morning-after pedaling here from his house. Someday, when I get older, maybe I’ll have as much endurance as he does. Steven is an XC or Cross Country mountain biker. Like Cross Country Skiing and Running, his focus is on endurance and speed. While today’s XC mountain bikes can take the sting out of bumps and drops, they’re stiff and rigid compared to trail bikes. They also have a geometry which puts you in an aggressive, forward position. Steven rides his XC bike over the most difficult trails here, keeping low over jumps and drops to maintain his speed. In the ridiculously humid, midday heat of South Florida, I almost ran out of water trying to keep up with him.
So how long has Steven been mountain biking. (clip) You heard right, Steven started mountain biking at age 55. He was riding the dirt fire road with his son, and was forced into the trails because the path was blocked. The rest is history. Now I don’t consider 55 or 62 to be all that old, but I get emails from people in their 40’s who are wondering if they can start mountain biking. Well, stop wondering, and start riding.
Richard is very well known here at Markham Park.
Besides having a hand in building almost every trail here, Richard tests all the features himself, from rocky descents, to drops, to jumps... especially jumps.
This new table top and berm are pretty easy to session by looping around part of the trail. I saw a lot of people ride this feature today-and here comes Richard.
Richard and I have a very similar riding style, in that we’re not content with just pedaling through the trails. Anything that’s possible to get rad on is fair game. Richard has the right bike for the job too. While Steven’s bike is meant for XC, Richard rides a trail bike with a dropper post, and plenty of suspension travel.
Having ridden motocross for the better part of his life, Richard just can’t stop jumping around. Considering how hurt you can get riding motocross, mountain biking is actually a less risky activity, but that doesn’t make it any less physically demanding. I’ve seen guys my age walk some of the features that Richard pedals right through.
Both Richard and Steven are here at the trails almost every weekend, and indeed there are plenty of people in their age bracket competing at local races. For anyone who participates in action sports this wouldn’t be too surprising. Mountain bikers, surfers, rock climbers, and everyone in between know a handful of people twice their age, out there doing the same thing.
So, besides entering the play area at McDonalds, or being tried as a minor, there aren’t many things you can be too old to do. An activity like mountain biking is a great way to keep your body and mind young. It’s something you can improve at rapidly, and use to benchmark your fitness and agility. So getting back to our original question, I think that you could be too old to not start mountain biking.
Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

I was talking about excessive alcohol use, Anthony. I enjoy whiskey as well (though I tend to buy American or Irish ;-). I did not quit completely, but I stopped drinking regularly/habitually. Just a couple of shots here or there, or one beer occasionally. Moderation has made all the difference in how I feel. Now, I have much more energy and a clearer head. This was difficult to achieve, admittedly, and many guys will find it impossible to do. I would say, though, that if you are over 50 years old & average more than 200mL of 80 proof per week, then you are drinking too much, and it will probably kill you prematurely.

I started at 32, I wish I had started sooner. I was a bit of a couch potato and a home body for most of my 20s. My wife would always bug me to go camping or do something outdoorsy and fun and I'd rather stay home and play video games. I then started working a second job on top of my full time job which energized me enough to not want to just sit around, there was so much to be done. After I hit the goal I was trying to reach, I quit the second job and we just enjoyed our time more because I wanted to go out and do things, travel, etc. I still wasn't big into camping but was more open to it. 3 months after I quit my wife found a lump in her neck. She got it checked out and had a biopsy, it turned out to be Hodgkins Lymphoma and she would need 6 months of chemo at age 28. She got the news on my 30th birthday and it still is the worst day of my life. I was devastated, probably more than her lol, but also felt guilty in a way like I let her down by being a lazy turd not wanting to go out and enjoy life. She took chemo like a champ, the cancer was gone before her treatment even ended and thankfully has stayed away. But there is nothing like going in for a scan every 3 months to possibly get bad news to energize you get out and enjoy life. We picked up jet skiing as a hobby, did some traveling with those. When it got too cold we tried biking and I got way in to it. My wife had a bad experience by falling into a ditch full of disgusting runoff water with sewage that had leaked in…so she backed off for a while lol. When she was ready to try again she herniated a disc in her back (Oh chemo, you ruin things down the line). 6 months later she’s finally feeling like riding again. Really long story short, enjoy your life at every chance you get. I’d tell anyone who’s thinking they want to try mountain biking, or anything for that matter, to just do it. You never know when things can take a turn for the worst and you’ll have regrets. If I sit at home for too long now I feel like I’m wasting my life. You may say you don’t have the money to do what you want, which may be true but you can always find a cheaper way to do something. When we go on long road trips we just sleep in our Rav 4 at Walmart or truck stops, showers are cheap at decent truck stops. When we took our jet skis to Lake Powell we towed them with my Tundra, I threw together a makeshift bed that fit in the back seat of the crewmax Tundra so we just slept there comfortably for 4 nights. All we paid for was gas and some food, we took food with us in a cooler for most meals.

BKXC I think what happens is the average 40 or 50 year old is overweight and out of shape which makes them look much older than they are. But, people associate age 50 with that overweight out of shape older look. When your that age and fit, you look way younger than what people expect. The best way to look young as you age is to be fit.

My hero is a 59 year old gentlemen named Mike. He started riding bikes a little over three years ago. Mike's story is of inspiration. 3.5 years ago Mike had a heart attack and weighed 402 pounds at 5'11". His wife was already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was on a pile of pills with no results. He walked into our small local bike shop and asked how to get in shape so as never have to fill his first prescription. Cory our bike shop owner refused to sell him a bike until he was below 285 pounds. He drew up Mike a diet and exercise plan which started with just small walks around the block. It took nine months for him to reach weight and he purchased his first 29r. Just to ride on the street and paved trails at first. Then he purchased a rd bike and trainer for the winter. We did spin classes 3 nights a week all winter long and was able to watch him turn into an amazing athlete. He is now 168 lbs. This year he has entered several rd and mtn bike races and has placed well. He also purchased his first real mtn bike this spring a Transition Scout. We were in Kellogg Idaho last weekend and he did his first black diamond section. As of today my knee tendons are killing me. Yesterday Mike took me out and we did 55.8 Mile rd ride. He kicked my ass and stayed with me and encouraged me the whole way.

I just had to comment...I started mtbing 35 yrs ago at age 36. I usually crash a couple of times a year, but so far have only cracked a knee cap & broken a rib (when I went over the handlebars while going over a jump. I love for jumps) I love it when I get a yearly physical & I'm asked if I've fallen lately. "Hell yeah! Just last week!" They're usually face plants when I go over the handlebars, which surprisingly don't hurt. Although a few years a hit a log I was trying to jump & landed on my back. Just dig the dirt & stones out of my helmet, wipe the dirt off my self, & continue riding until I'm too tired to pedal anymore. One side benefit of mtbing for so long is you will eventually have quite a stable of bikes. Seth, I really enjoy your channel especially the humor.

NoahBoostmaster Stock wheelset? I mean unless you have a $5,000 and up component package bike, any stock wheels are usually junk. Could be loose spokes though as you mentioned. Also, as we've seen in the Enduro World Series, a good wheelset can be ridden down a mountain on a blown tire and still survive another few stages.

I hope I can get over to Markam park this winter to see those guys on the trails. Great video.

Here in Montrose, Colorado, we have a good number of mountain bike riders in their 60's and 70's, many who have been riding since the 1980's - and we're not just riding, we're still out building trails! When you're retired, it's always a good thing to do some volunteer work, and I've found that spending time building mountain bike trails is a great way to give back to the community while getting great exercise - everybody wins!

Love this topic. I'm 46 and I rode BMX bikes when I was a (pre)teen. Had my Redline and Race, Inc. bikes, always making upgrades for birthday presents. So many make-shift "trails" with the new housing developments around the suburbs of Chicago. Stopped riding for years and then started road biking. Too boring for me, so my girlfriend and I switched to mountain bikes. Awesome, but so many new ways to get hurt. Friends and family tell us "you don't bounce like you used to", which is true. For us "older" riders, they make a ton of pads and protectors. No one cares what you wear or look like on the trails, they are just glad you aren't hiking with an unleashed, undisciplined dog in front of them :)

Loved this video, made me feel good to see some people out there in their 60's. I mountain biked in my 30's, then took a long layoff due to some illness then started back in my late 40's because of the trails in FL. I had brought my bike down there to tow a surf cart for fishing and one of the state parks had some trails... I gave it a go and had so much fun it reinvigorated my interest in the sport. After a promise to myself that I'd be still with it for a full year I tread myself to a bike with suspension and retired my 1994 Trek 8000 rigid. Eventually I found some guys around my age, one is 55 the other is 59 and we ride regularly often losing 20 year olds that can't keep up with us, lol. Competitive, just a little but it's all about fun and getting out, I really hope I'm doing it into my 80's or longer, definitely never too old if you keep some fitness.

Seth, thank you for the inspiración and affirmation. I first had a mt bike in 1986. It was a Peugeot that I bought at the Army PX in Fuerth, Bavaria, Germany where I was stationed. I was 24 and had grown up in Boston so was accustomed to biking on city streets in ass to elbow living conditions. I used to night ride a lot just to get some peace from the people and cars and ride in a big cemetery where most of my known family allegedly lies at rest. Biking in Germany was a dream come true.... perfectly groomed dirt trails in forest parks in Nuremberg and Munich. I used to ride these trails for hours after work and on weekends. Then, I returned stateside to Virginia and then PA and it was not the same. Kept the mt bike but only intermittently was on dirt trails. I moved to Miami on an Army assignment and the dirt traiks i rode were along canals in the Doral area. I then went to Orlando for 12 years and got into riding the great paved bike trail network there on a road type bike (Specialized Vita Elite ). But fortunately, I moved to Tallahassee a little over a year ago. I discovered that Tallahassee is a mtb town with great dirt trails all over so now at age 55 I am getting back into mt biking. I spent my first year here exploring trails on my 1995 Trek 820 rigid frame. But have upgraded to an entry level Specialized Jynx to try to become contemporary and not elicit stares of pity. I plan to enjoy and beat the hell out of this bike for the next year or less to confirm what I really need. I have been on a bike continuously since 1964 and have never lost my love for bikes. I am excited for this new chapter in my life, and happy that I found your channel.

Bro, I started MTB this year after turning 61. I have background on gravel and road cycling but never realized how technically demanding MTB was. But fell in love with it after one invite from friends. The fact that MTB challenges you to become a better cyclist technically is too much to resist! I do realize the short intense climbs do take a toll on me more than my riding buddies. But for now a trade off I am willing to make to keep going. Thanks for the video, it is supportive and encouraging. As you said this is a mental status but we do need to work smart on the fitness to keep it safe and perform. Cheers!

I've ridden road bikes for 40 years. At age 57 I started mountain biking when my then 12 year old son got some size on him and indicated an interest. That was two years ago. My road biking endurance really helped, but I love riding in the woods and developing technical skills (within reason). I think we're much more likely to rust out than to wear out - life is motion, and mountain biking helps me keep fit and feeling young for someone in his 60th year.
