I am in my fifties and I like to wear any kind of jeans (slim, straight, or even skinny). You are never too old to wear jeans! I don't like the idea to wear specific clothes when you are becoming older.

I like the fact that your videos are more encouraging to older men to consider how to dress the best for your age while also encouraging us to take a few risk as well. I would like to know your thoughts on jeans rolled up as well as shorter jeans/ pants in general, which I find super stylish in the summer months with flip flops, loafers, or Vans, for hanging out on patio's or outdoor events, etc.

I'm 72 and wear jeans often and believe that I look pretty good in them. I prefer darker wash denim in blue, gray and black. I also gravitate to jeans with stretch fabrics. Of course, that's just my opinion as well.

Hey great video and a very relevant topic.I turned 48 this year and have been wondering the exact same thing.Dont want to seem like im trying too hard.In my pursuit to look more mature and say 48ish 😁 i recently picked up a Levis 501 in dark wash.Its a straight cut jeans and needs a bit of getting used to especially if you've been wearing slim/skinny with a tapered leg for years on end.I think i like this transition and want to pick up a couple of different colors like mid blue and perhaps a black.I was hooked on Diesel Jeans for the past few years now but see my self inching towards Levis for old school denim look.I think now the trend is moving towards more roomier fits but i cant seem to get myself to like the very loose fitting ones no matter what the trend.Like you rightly mentioned,its best to stick with the classics and what better way to do it than the Levis 501s.Take care and Keep 'em coming.

Here’s the deal - if your in shape mentally and physically, understand style and what works for you, then rock whatever you want! I dress to impress myself first and foremost because if I’m happy and confident then typically that along with a positive attitude and kind demeanor your outfit just becomes part of your personality. I’m 56 have 3 sons and they call me for styling advice - it’s been that way my entire life and yes the classics are the base . If fact I’m breaking in a new pair of 1966 selvage Levi’s 501s as I write this and in a few years at 60 they will just be getting good and broke in. Thanks for the content and dress to impress !

Hey John! I hadn't been over to your site for a while but this one got my interest. Great content and advice as always! One thing that I would add is that the same way that some may balk at seeing an older man wear jeans, the same would apply to dark/light, etc. I basically have all 3. Dark denim, medium and also something close to a white wash. For example, weekend romp to hang out at a patio...light jeans, fun shirt, and some chucks. I don't usually get confused with someone in their 50s but I can thank genetics for that. I'm 55 and tend to carry myself a bit different in lifestyle, dress, but I definitely try to stay away from "street style" and aim to target somewhere down the middle. I guess what I'm saying is, personality also could affect the type of jeans. I'm sure there are men in this blog that would never attempt to wear a flowery shirt like the one in this vid (which rocks btw), but then some others would. Personality has its place especially with jeans/chinos.

Great advice - Only just purchased a darker blue pair of jeans the other day. I have been wearing slim fit for a while in light blue - some brands are 'super' slim and not really suitable for an older gentleman - like myself (who is turning 60 in a few days time!)

You make very valid points. Mainly fit is key. Personally, I'm sick to death of blue denim. I don't wear them anymore. But, I do wear five pocket style pants in khaki. I recommended them to good friend who is way past forty (I am way past 40 & have a 32 waist) and is heavy set in both denim and cotton twill in khaki/tan shades. He digs them by the way. The five pocket style is slimming and looks much more stylish. They look a heck of a lot more age appropriate than blue denim and look super either casual or dressy. They look more like a trouser but perform like denim. The ones that are woven with some stretch are golden. But, hey, if you're digging a ditch by all means, wear your blue jeans. IMHO.

I wear denhams because of durability. Any distressed look comes from my own use over the years, as my jeans age from casual wear to work pants, to worn out and, finally, discarded. At 64, I have a few pair of jeans older than some people I meet.

One thing I’ve found with being older that gives me an advantage is that of wearing nicer jeans that fit well (am 67 currently, and not over weight) along with nice casual or business casual dress shirts and a sport coat gives me a “classy” look that makes me stand out from the crowd. Also, I’m a standout by being maybe slightly overdressed (If I feel overdressed too much I just push up the sleeves on the jacket for a more casual look) when the occasion or other men are compared but it is acceptable to others which means I get the stares, approaches, etc from the ladies that other men don’t. Are they jealous? Yes, but they’d never admit it! Just my two cents for other men out there! Great content as always.

Finding a great fitting jean is the hardest part for me, as a 56yo man my 17yo daughter about lost her mind when I wore a pair of American Eagles (her favorite brand), I hit the gym regularly so she's use to seeing me in relaxed fit, the ones I was wearing were slim straight fit. After watching 40 over fashion and the other fashion KZbin channels I started to see that my style wasn't up to par, call it a midlife crisis but I felt compelled to change up my style. I was never one to show off my progress from the gym so basically oversized everything, "slim" was a bad word in my vocabulary. I realized my true shirt size was not XL but LG, and that "slim" cut looked better on me than "classic". But jeans are soo hard to find a pair not to tight on the thighs (remember I work out) without being to wide at the bottom, I've actually had to go up 2in in the waist then take them to get altered back to my waist size, that actually works great but paying $100 for a pair then paying more money to get them altered starts draining the bank account. John I've been watching your videos for a few years now and your no nonsense no hype videos have always helped with my style game, thanks and BTW that shirt is 🔥

I asked int he other thread. High Rise Jeans. I currently wear 511s, yet they are a bit on the low side for rise. Both my daughters say they look fine Dad, lol. But, I am 5'10" 210. Waist is 42, jeans I wear are 36 and fit fine. But they arent always comfortable as they fall down easily, even with belt snug and the new trend towards elastomer in the jeans.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with wearing jeans over 40. I like jeans and will continue to wear them. I ride a motorcycle and jeans are the best way to go. You are right, of course older men should not wear designer jeans or baggy jeans. Yes stick with the classics. Who makes the rules? You make the rules John, that is why we are here. :) By the time we are 40-50 we should look like we have achieved a level of wealth, so I would stay away from too distressed of a fabric, and I am also not a fan of fake wear in the bend areas as it just looks fake. If you shop at used stores, you can create that look of mature wealth even if your budget is low; all it takes is time and selective buying.

I have all hues and types in my wardrobe, black, dark indigo, medium wash, selvedge, stretch and even a very light wash. I really like my light wash (Show me the someone who says I cant wear one). Spot on advice as usual. Im 60 which blows people away as im constantly told that I look like I'm in my late 40s. Genes have a great deal to do with this and the fact that I run 8 miles a day plus a Pelaton workout, and pay attention to what I eat and wear. I've been an avid viewer to this site as what you wear goes a long way towards making an impression. I wear tastefully tailored jeans with various shirts and many times white leather tennis shoes which strike the right balance between looking age appropriate stylish vs trying too hard. For those of you interested check out the stuff availabe by John Henrick which this site turned me on to. Great clothes at unbelievable prices with fantastic quality. Honestly I've purchased nearly everything in their fall catalog. When done right, older guys can crush it,but you need to look sharp, distinguished and "all that". Feel sorry for women my age as they just "get old". Guys this is our time, go for it.

Fit and maximizing the classics are king to style as people age. I’m 45, 5’8” and 150lbs; also I look younger than my stated age. I wear medium to dark colored Levi 502’s. I recently updated my jeans and I took the time trying on different cuts of jeans to find the right pair for my body. Any “older” person can have style without “trying too hard.”

At 66, I only wear black Jean's now ( when I wear Jean's). I generally don't wear them because there are too many fashionable options. Great video as usual.

I may be odd man out here but I have shied away from jeans as I have gotten older, me now 61. Now I just have 1 pair of jeans I've had for a long time but wearing them bores me. For me it's shorts all summer with the exception of some linen slacks when the occasion requires something more dressy. Winter tailored fit joggers or sweats.
