I'm using the ring and used to use the gen 2 ring too. But I want to say one thing for potential new owners, especially Android users. This company always gives their iOS app a priority. A feature that automatically detects and record activities has been in their iOS app since this February but this hasn't been implemented in the Android app yet for 10 months 7/20/22, Update: Oura has treated iOS and Android users a little bit more equally, the feature that I wrote originally is already available for Android users and they recently added a new feature and that got available for Android within 2 or 3 weeks after iOS.

@chrisjfox87152 жыл бұрын
Smart rings is something that the industry has wanted to develop for nearly a decade if not more. The issue is that rings come in way too many sizes - there is no one size fits most. If you try to limit it to a select few sizes then you alienate too many people; too many sizes and the production costs are so expensive that you have no choice but to a) pass it on to the customer or b) figure out some way to make the product a Loss Leader which would almost certainly never work. Bottom line, getting smart rings right is too cost-prohibitive.

As a sleep researcher, 1: this product is really good for a whole lot of things, but 2: it can't really tell sleep stages apart so well (it guesses more than anything) and 3: the algorithms overestimate sleep (if you watch a movie it might think you entered sleep) Don't get me wrong, it is a great tool, it gives people a focus on sleep and people REALLY don't put enough focus on sleep! And, it really can give you a great idea of your sleep onset latency, sleep quality, wake after sleep onset, etc. But just like fitbits, apple watches, etc, it can't really tell sleep stages apart (unless it is around your head like an EEG or a polysomnograph, you can't really know the stage of a person with great accuracy). But then again, how important is it really for regular people to know exactly how much time they spent in REM, N2, N3, etc?

However when my earlier watch died I tried using oura and it took some heavy hits from the metal bars. Big scratches, lost "paint" and overall really worn out. Contacted Oura support and they pretty much said that they don't recommend using the ring on the gym and the finish couldn't be fixed because it probably would break the sensors.

You probably didn't get the right size. Some people need half sizes like me. @@MarryChicone I'm curious now...and NOT trying to argue or anything...but HOW does this device help with insomnia? What I mean is, don't you know if you slept well? I'm being serious, not sarcastic or negative, I genuinely want to know, because my wife does suffer a bit from insomnia, and so...I'm curious. So...what does this ring - or any similar device - tell you, that you didn't know yourself? HOW does it help, exactly?
@firdaushbhadha25972 жыл бұрын
This device's implementation of body tracking under cuts the underlying data's value. This type of data can very easily tell you about onsets of illness, sickness, and health problems. With a bit of work on the wearers part, tagging events and situations, kind of like a live journal, can take it a step further. Whether the data is annotated after the fact in charts or in real-time on a watch or something, tagging events allows you to identify patterns in your behaviour that result in health and sleep problems. I was able to identify the exact cut off time for caffeine to not impact my sleep, thus leading to less caffeine use, and I could see that in a chart to see exactly how. I could see its impact on my resting heart rate. With other gadgets, I could tell its impact on my O2 levels, and with more diligent note taking, what food impacts my health. Best of all, I don' t need a doctor to tell me how to read a chart. With a bit of careful consideration and mindful eating, drinking, exercise, I know exactly how to stay healthy longer without having to go to the doctor. In Canada, this isn't as big an impact, apart from having control over my own health. In other parts of the world, doctors are costly, and having a tool to avoid visiting them, is a god send. UNFORTUNETLY, despite the claims of this ring, many of these benefits are either impossible with just this ring alone, or aren't accessible or easily understood. The worst issue is the added effort on the person to actually journal what they are doing and track their food. Something I assume, if they had the want or desire to, would be doing anyways. However, for people like me, those who want more control over their own body, this kind of data is really helpful and I am looking forward to seeing where this industry goes. I look forward to the day I can use smart glasses to automatically tag what I eat. I look forward to personalized health care, automated healthcare, and democratized health care.

Great product, however it’s a shame they’re locking anything useful behind a subscription. Was going to get one but the subscription ruins it for me.
@markb19352 жыл бұрын
A $299 USD product with a $6.99 USD monthly subscription fee… No thank you 🤮 But if their wasn’t a subscription fee, I would buy one. Edit: I would buy an Oura Ring over an Watch if their wasn’t a subscription fee.

Great device, I attended this startup 3 years ago when OURA just planned to reach the US market. There was also luxury devices with diamonds. Anyway, now it is much cheaper and has more technologies under the trunk.

It would be impressive if it could do oxygen saturation. Every other sleep tracker on the market can do what this does.

It has a sensor for blood oxygen saturation, but it won’t be supported by the software until 2022. They’re working on their algorithms to make it accurate.

46 BPS isn’t that insanely low?
@FhangMedia2 жыл бұрын
46 BPS is insanely high, think you meant to say BPM in which case, no, during sleep it's not.
@wissama36862 жыл бұрын
It's not really. It varies from one person to another, but in general, the more active the person is, the lower their BPM is. for example, Professional Athletes can have a resting BPM of < 40

It's dawned on me that Lew has kids, but he doesn't have a wedding ring. Either running the solo dad life or they just don't wear marriage rings. I'm only 4 minutes in so I might have to bite my tongue

The real question is. About about the gym rats. My hands are so rough and the part that the ring fits on my ring finger is thick... will it even work on me?
@RussianShadowDragon2 жыл бұрын
It's actually best if it's a snug fit. People with large knuckles in relation to the rest of their finger may have issues with accuracy. That said, beware that lifting weights with the ring on will probably scratch it up. I'm ok with a scratched up ring, but know that that will probably happen. Also workout HR data is scheduled to release in 2022, not yet available. Also note that it is a subscription business model.

As an engineer : Dayum! As a consumer: its too steep for me. I was expecting to be 200-250$, but its 300+ euro. Its probably worth the money for someone that needs all of that info and can use it.
