Are Your Chicks Ready to Move from the Brooder to the Coop?

My hocks are 3 weeks old. We just expanded our pen and have a new coop. So with the old coop and a smaller pen we can separate them when old enough to transition.

I do not have any current chickens in the coop. My coop is located in a barn. What are your thoughts on putting the chicks in brooder inside the coop? All 4 sides of coop are enclosed with plywood. Is there a recommendation you have that I should consider as to the outside temperature? Brooder will have standard heat lamps at the brooder as well I have heat bulbs already in the coop. Thanks

Well.. I've been doing it all wrong. I have my chicks in the coop with the brooder from day 3 and it's week 3 now.. and during the day when the sun is out... I put.them in the bottom cage to run around... Their still alive so I guess that's good! Lol. I also heard chicks don't need water at night because they'll drown.. and in the morning when I get them out their SUPER THIRSTY! I'm thinking now they need water at night too. It's my first time with chickens... And geese.. and ducks.. lol. Love your videos! I have taken alot of tips from you already!

Hi I'm sorry for the late reply but I'm so happy to hear that my advice has been helpful😊 I know your chicks are already older at this point but they need to be under the heat lamp 24/7 for the first 3 weeks at least, longer when it's colder. And they should definitely have access to water at all times. They can't drown in a regular chicken water. I'm happy to help out anytime you have questions about anything😊

1 month and 1 day old chicks We take them outside and they do fine but they still small so I kinda still have them inside my garage ..Putting chicken wire on the chicken run this week & the chicken coop is inside of it ..

If they are new chicks under 4 weeks make sure they stay under they heat lamp 24/7 until they get in their feathers. Especially during the first 2 weeks. Don’t worry about taking them outside until they are big enough for the coop just be sure they have the heat lamp while they need it 😊

Yes, chickens instinctively like to roost! My best tip for you is when you set up your roost to set it up higher than your laying boxes because they will want to roost in the highest spot of the coop. If you check out my other video “Nine best coop features” I go more into depth on setting up your coop and roosts for your chickens.

Morning Audrey - question…. I have chicks that have been in a coop for a bit now.. they are about 8 weeks. Another set 4 weeks. I watched your video how and when to move chicks.. my question is about older chicks.. they are pooping in nest box they don’t use. Is there a way to keep them from doing this so they learn when it’s time it is only for eggs? They have 2 roosting bars above poop tray. Thank you in advance.

Hi Robbin, are the nesting boxes higher than the roosting bar? Chickens will (typically) roost on the highest place in the coop. It may just also be that they are young and easier for them to get to. So if you could block it off until they are closer to egg laying age that may help also. But if your roosts are lower than the boxes, move them higher 😊
