@@RobWalker-r9c yeah I think that’s very true definitely depends on what people like but then if all you’ve got is a 4 wheeler then I’d just say it’s all I’ve got I’m sure they’d be happy just to have their lawns cut If they are that fussy then they might not be the customer for your business

I used a 21” Honda rear roller for years, before that Hayters (when they were good). I transferred to an EGO wheeled mower two years ago and asked all clients whether they cared about stripes - none did after all my efforts of straight lines for years 😂 Should’ve asked ages ago. 20 years ago most clients were fussy about striped lawns, I guess people have more important things to think about now!

@@THETATTOOGARDENER83 there’s a lot of models now so I’d research a bit! I have an LM2020E 51cm, really versatile and light but could do with a little more power for uplift. Dry grass it’s great and a 5 amp battery will last 1.5-2 hrs, depending on grass type, incline, wet grass etc.

I run two Honda pro mower. One roller and one 4 wheel. I mainly use the roller during the year and cut all my jobs on a height setting number 4 and now the same way ish time come rain or shine. Maintenance is key on any but kit and keep the blade sharp and the box clean will get a full box every time even in the wet. My 4 wheel is mainly for first cuts at the beginning of year if needed or for overgrow jobs or even spare if the roller goes down.

Ive got about 7or8 customers that specifically asked for stripes. One in particular pays me to cut and stripe half an acre with a walk behind roller mower. I said to her it would be cheaper for someone else to come with a sit down mower but she likes 22 inch stripes up and down her garden. Useless on small gardens but look great with long or wide lawns. I've got mulcher mowers, roller mower, 4 wheeled mower, 3 wheeled mower and a small one for awkward gardens. I think its my tools for the day so i buy what i need.

Great video pete. I don't have a choice I only have 1 mower 4 wheeled battery makita. Gives a nice cut struggles on the long wet stuff but have to persevere can't justify buying a new 1 just yet. No customers complain about lack of stripes but I double cut most of my lawns which are small to medium and the couple of large lawns are more moss than grass so would be wasted anyway. Keep up the good work bro. I hope to be in the same kit and skill level as you in a couple more years. I used to love the hayter and viking when I was in the tool trade.

@THETATTOOGARDENER83 as with electric cars there a couple of years away still. It does everything I need for regular mowing. It's not small or light though. Weighs 40+kg 21" self drive. Steel deck. @@THETATTOOGARDENER83 Izzy is more of a mower for slow work like fortightly postage stamps , its geared very slow for that purpose and to be honest not good in wet at all. the HRN 536 VK 21 is a nice Budget 4 wheel striper and the Pro models above that even more so . Maintaining the Flap is key tho ,after all a stripe is merely Light refraction so once you get the grass quality and the mower maintenance right its all about frequency of cut, a lot of old Pros convince their customers for Twice weekly then you know you have made it :)

Made the mistake of buying a Honda rear roller mower two years ago, I paid a lot of money for it, now I only use it for my garden, it's crap in the wet, it's heavy and a pain if the customers have steps, four wheel mower all day long for me, no customer have ever asked for stripes, although they have commented on the finish of the rear roller, great topic. Any gardener starting out should definitely go for four wheels.

Every lawn can be different to the next , and also access to the said lawn I actually run 6 mowers just for the fact the larger lawns I use stihl and Honda pro , medium to small I use stihl batterie or hayter 41 pro and then Honda izy with twin mulching blades for rough grass and mulching leafs and hedge cuttings and a Honda hrx hydrostatic for grass slopes I judge what ever area is suited to which mower I use which helps pro long the life of the machines , example thick mossy lawn I’m not going to put a roller on it as it won’t look good where a 4 wheeler probably do a better job , up steps I’m not going to lift the big boys up so use the lighter hayter pro or stihl battery basically what ever works best for me and the equipment and can to the best job possible.

Personally I just use a Honda 4 wheeler but then the majority of my clients and gardens are more average sized houses/gardens. A couple who want stripes have their own roller mowers that I use. I also think it depends on the lawn. Most lawns look better with stripes but some odd shaped ones or bumpy lawns actually can look worse with stripes in my opinion. It's also worth remembering that rear roller mowers cost significantly more to buy and also repair so if providing stripes, it needs to be at a higher price. Before I went self-employed, I used to work for a maintenance company that prided themselves on a premium garden maintenance service and they only used Hayter roller mowers and it did leave a lovely finish, but ultimately for the vast majority of my customers, they wouldn't want to pay the extra that a rear roller mower would add to the price of their cut . I think that the lawns you stripe in your videos do look far better for having stripes so I can see why the clients want them.

Pumping out toxic fumes right under my nose and around the customers property is not good for anybody and theres the added noise too. Not sure youve tried cordless mowers but im hoping that with big enough batteries I can do a whole load of mowing before I run out of juice!?! Personally I love my Bosch 370Li.
