Best advice I ever got was at an orientation for an adult beginners hockey program decades ago. The coach said to make sure that we are wearing properly fitted skates from day-one, and that even Wayne Gretzky would look like a beginner in ill-fitting rental skates. Skating is actually a lot easier - and more fun - than a lot of beginners think. But the skates have to fit.
@MarcelsHockeySchool5 жыл бұрын
Peter Geyer yep. But most beginners rent skates in their shoe size, then they feel weird, then they think the skate is too small so they take a size even bigger, then they hate skating 🤷♂️

Peter Geyer if I’m a size 10.5 U.K. do you think a 10 is too big
@petergeyer75845 жыл бұрын
@@vaporhockey102 I'm not an expert, but I would suspect you might want to start around a 9. The trick is that different skate models fit differently, so there is no perfect rule. If you have the option, I would strongly recommend going to a shop and trying different skates and different sizes. As Marcel mentioned, skates should be snug, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. The only way to really find that out is to try them on before you buy.

Yes. What sz are you wearing today? Im a 10.5 us, right foot long around 11, left foot wide around ee. First time i got my fitting at a store, i was recommended 9ee in supremes, but vapors feels more secure for me in that sizing. Saw a recent video saying that my skates are probably too big.. in it, the guy recommended going down to a 8.5 for 10.5/11 shoe sizes. On top of that, i recently went into a pure hockey store and used a machine, after the results, the rep. recommended a 9.5 regular fit.

I was watching you trying to power stop on those larger skates, and noticed the struggle. One of my students (from a long time ago) told me what happened to him when he got skates too large. He tried to power stop, and wound up on the back of his head. The explanation he got was that he didn't compensate towards the toes far enough, and was pivoting on the wrong part of the blades, hence why he fell backwards and on his head. He remembered the old standard (half to a full size smaller than street shoe size) and was wearing size 10 skates. A week later, he went to a Pure Hockey store and found out his actual skates should be an 8. He got himself a pair a couple of weeks later (Bauer Supremes, M-4's, if memory serves). He says he was relieved when his stops didn't cause more crashes, and he's loving his skates. He even has tryouts for the rink's 35-up league (he's in his mid-50's) tomorrow (Sunday, November 6).

Hello, My boyfriend bought a pair of skates and at the shop it seems fine to him, but then when he was on ice he told me that his toes were not touching the end and that when he moved forward the heel didn't stay against the boot.. Do you have any advice on how to fix it without buying a new pair for the moment? Maybe with a insole (like superfeet?) or a pad/foam ? Thank you!
@MarcelsHockeySchool8 ай бұрын
That’s tough….are the skates heat moldable? Then you could bake them and they might form to you boyfriend’s feet a bit better. Other than that, an insole might work, or thicker socks.

My nephew started to play hockey last season and since I'm going to the ice rink every Sunday I started to take him with me some time ago. I noticed that he's always skating with his feet "angled" like you showed and I dunno. I instantly taught the skates seem to be too big. I think I'll let him try a pair of rentals one size smaller than his current ones and if they fit... He might get some for his birthday in July. Thanks!
@MarcelsHockeySchool10 ай бұрын
You’re welcome! A lot of kids/beginners have weaker ankles so they tend to bend in a bit, but I have noticed on my own daughter that tighter fitting skates do help. She has two pairs, and keeps telling me the smaller pair is too tight (they are tight but are supposed to be tight, and still fit just right imo). But she stands much better in the smaller pair. The bigger pair fits looser; she likes that, but her ankles cave in and she skates worse in them. The skates should definitely not hurt but the kids do need to get used to a tighter fit than regular street shoes.

@@MarcelsHockeySchool We went to the rink last Sunday morning and he tried some tighter fitting skates. We got a pair of nicely sharpened rental skates and it was an absolute success! :) We spent four hours at the rink (instead of the usual 60 minutes) and my nephew was absolutely amazed how well he could skate in the tighter ones. He also mentioned that his feet are not hurting anymore like they did after his hockey training.

I see lots of people wear their skates loose like that and they skate good and are able to hockey stop, crossover and all that stuff. So I’m confused on how tight to have my skatesZ I’m still learning.
@MarcelsHockeySchool4 жыл бұрын
Basically your skate boot should form a nice straight line from bottom to top with properly tied skates. I don’t wear mine that tight either, but they’re the right size so my feet don’t slip around in them. When skates are too big, you have tie them tighter to have any support

Your toes should just scratch the end of the skate when you are standing straight and your skates are tied up. When you bend your knees, you toes should get pulled back a bit. I think that 27 is generally too big if your foot is only 26.

I wear a size 10 shoe, a size 8 skate is just a bit too small, 8.5 is almost perfect. I’m guessing if I split the between and 8.5 and 8 I’d have a perfect fit. @MarcelsHockeySchool4 жыл бұрын
Dave Lok I don’t think that baking them would solve it. What size are your shoes, and what size are your skates? Other reasons why your my flare are: the boot is too soft, the skate isn’t tied up tight enough, your natural anatomy, or that your skating muscles are still a bit too weak.
@Dashdonkey4 жыл бұрын
@@MarcelsHockeySchool I wear 8.5 for dress shoes and I a got size 7 boot. I tried to tie it down but it's too flared out and stiff at the boot opening to tie it down around my bottom calf. @MarcelsHockeySchool4 жыл бұрын
Dave Lok Ok, then yeah give baking a try for sure! Don’t tie the laces around your calf. What model skates are they? If you’re brand new to skating and the skate is super stiff, I’m not sure if that would cause the pigeon toe problem, but it could be a problem in general.

My 8 year old son is new to skating and his skates do exactly what you’re showing. I took him to a Pure Hockey store where they scanned his foot and fitted/baked his skates for him. Maybe he just needs to develop his “skating muscles”?
@MarcelsHockeySchool4 жыл бұрын
It’s possible that his ankles are weak, but I run our city’s learn to skate program and my experience is that 90% of the kids who skate like that have skates that are too big and/or too loose. Because a lot of newcomers with proper fitting skates don’t stand like that, even though their “skating muscles” would also be underdeveloped as a newcomer
@meliss95362 жыл бұрын
Pure Hockey scanned my feet, too. Didn’t offer to bake my bakeable skates. It was so rushed and the guy swore one foot was 4, one is 4.5. They feel too big, like I told him. He didn’t care about the actual fit, just a very quick hole on the scanner. Not the best experience. Going somewhere else.
