In my time I was a plant site technician in the UK, and the Bosch "P" series pump was common place, hence I found myself with Bosch technicians a fare bit. Most where average to good, but sometimes you found yourself with a real clever guy that knew the product and was worth his salt. I am in no doubt that Gary is equal to the high level Top guns of my days back in late 1994 onwards. The sound of the test bench and the smell of the calibration fluid came rushing back. Really enjoyed this video and hope to see more. When Wes started the truck after rebuild it was clearly fixed.

It's one thing to watch someone on KZbin build high HP performance engine with an aftermarket block, crank, cam, rods, pistons, etc... but watching a someone whose had a career in fixing, rebuilding and calibrating injection pumps is mesmerizing. I almost forgot about Wes's "unicorns are real" video until this got recommended to me, and boy this was a fantastic watch. I probably won't watch the almost 3 hour long version, but this was very informative; I don't think this version missed much from what's important and relevant so good job. Area Diesel Service, you guys have a beautiful shop setup and I will keep you in mind when/if I ever get around to playing with the injectors or the p-pump on my '95 Dodge - it's no unicorn with 350k but every time I work on it the truck runs better. I work in auto repair and the shop I'm with is focused towards BMW/Mini and euro imports, I can only hope someday that this shop or whatever shop I end up at can be comparatively focused and as specialized as yours is(that might be hard doing full service compared to a pump shop haha). Anyway, great video. I learned a bunch and hope you all keep doing well, great stuff.

What a great video - sped up where the work is routine but back to normal for the explanations. Watching an expert makes this complicated device look easy to diagnose - obviously not. The wear marks are very subtle but likely Wes's problem. as a special bonus Wes's lady remark at the end - excellent! Well done guys.

As a Veteran Coast Guard aircraft mechanic I've absolutely no doubt that if Gary had ended up a fuel selector (carb on a Turboshaft helo engine) overhual mechanic he'd have Aviation maintenance companies head hunting him offering peris galore with a higher than normal salary. Wow, what an education. I can really appreciate the precision and the experience required to work on these pumps. I have a 94 Ram 2500 with the 12v 5.9 Cummins and one of these pumps. With 300,000 miles it starts almost instantly on the first crank. Oddly enough my 1993 Class A motor home with the same 12V 5.9 Cummins and P7100 and only 40,000 miles very hard to start, even when warm. Good inlet pressure and no air leaks in either the fuel supply or return lines. I'm stumped. I'll be calling this shop for advice and service after watching this absolutely impressive video. Thanks for making it!

In my world, I have worked on Perkins, Cummins 5.9 and one Deutz. I have nothing good to say about the modern CP engines. I rebuilt a 97 P-Pump and installed it in my 99 24 valve. Calibration is a pain and you need a cal bench to do it right. I changed timing on mine. Machined a tool using a tenth reading Starrett gage to set alternate timing using barrel #1. Pull delivery valve and adjust gear placement accordingly from pumps TDC #1. I have worked on the English CAV pumps also. I love the CAV and P-7100 pumps. Schied reshimmed my injectors to pop off with the lower P-Pump delivery pressure. It’s a true joy to watch this pump being rebuilt. I wound up removing my solenoid and replaced it with a cable. I also had initial issues with the aneroid due to a striped bolt on the aneroid cover moving it out of position. I bought the pump used and the PO had striped it. This video was totally invaluable as I have never seen this problem before. I also replaced the fuel filter and lift pump with an original 12 valve FASS. You can’t underestimate this. The tolerances and workmanship of this pump is insane. The nozzles on those injectors are extremely tiny. The fuel in some Wyoming stations from old above ground tanks is almost like a slurpee! So super clean fuel is vital. Also, I am a fan of Rotella T4. Routine changes! I have seen 250,000 miles with NO measurable wear! Except for the valve guides which is the collateral damage from ultra low sulfur fuel. Machined 24 mag bronze guides and honed to 3 tenths fit. Keep up the good work guys!

Which version is my preference? I really liked this one with excellent use of time lapse... slowing down to provide explanations. I liked having the choice, tho. I didn't watch the longer version as I didn't think I needed to; however, if I was trying to rebuild a pump like this one I probably would prefer the long version. Thanks for putting them both up... Great video guys. Let me just say that you both speak very quickly, which can be a problem to some viewers. I understand you are not in the business of making videos, but if you are making further videos, remembering to speak clearly & at moderate speed is important. Wes has sent the pump to the right shop. I have a 97 Dodge 2500 with one & one half million miles on it. The pump has never been worked on, & all parts are factory. This winter, I notice that if the block heater has not been plugged in for a couple of hours, It cranks & fires on several cylinders & as the engine speed increases, it picks up the remainder & idles fine. I think its time I sprung a few bucks for a set of replacement injectors..Bosch of course. . It is illuminating to watch the pump being worked on. Great work guys.
