I agree. Also I like it because there are times when it is better not to rebuild a very bad part. Sometimes you find a better core, sometimes you buy new. Avoid excess risk of early failure.

Why did I watch this video? I do not own or operate large diesel-powered equipment. But I was brought in by your man's clearly enunciated presentation on (1) the difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger, (2) how a turbo works, (3) what was needed for a repair, (4) why a repair was not possible, and (5) how the problem would be best resolved. I was impressed at your man's knowledge of the subject and (and this is a biggie) his integrity when he explained why replacement was impossible or undesirable. The presentation of the final solution proposed was comprehensive and the reasons for the pricings easy to understand. I liked the acknowledgement that the pricings might cause alarm in some minds but the explanations of them were clear and reasonable. If I was near Area Diesel Service and looking for the sort of services they offer, I would go to them with confidence that I would receive good treatment, good results and the level of courtesy I have come to expect from many US citizens.

Before I start giving compliments you should know -- I don't fix heavy machinery. I have used some and I am thinking about buying a basket case skid loader, but I am not a qualified reviewer. I watched this because I was watching FarmCraft101 and I am curious about all mechanical things. That said, this guy (didn't catch his name) is VERY good at describing technical details. I sort of knew hat a Turbo-Charger was before this video, but I have never seen it described so clearly. I spend my years describing technical stuff to other people. I have done that for about 30 years. But I am not as good as this man at presenting the details. He gave just enough info to teach me without drowning me in pedantic details. This is a great video. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing this video, Curt. I watched this shortly after it was released a couple days ago, but I didn't have time to do a commentary. I do now. . . Starting a running commentary. • Mmmm, those snazzy injectors and that injection pump for Large Marge (go watch that video, people!). They helped Jon a lot. 👍 • Egad! Now THAT'S a knife. . .and quite a box opener! 😉 • Do you have a t-shirt with the Schmoo definition on it, especially with the gritty graphic? • Thanks for the crash course in how turbochargers work. It helps orient the parts of the audience less familiar with them. . .and it's just interesting to listen to. • Hah. The turbine sitting on Curt's head. 😃 • Related comment about Curt's description of "excessive crankcase pressure" or "blowby", which is usually caused by bad piston rings allowing exhaust gasses pass into the crankcase. Whenever Clinton at C&C Equipment is examining a piece of equipment, he starts the engine, and then at some point he removes the oil filler cap. If he sees smoke puffing out, it has blowby, and he likely won't consider offering a bid on it, because it needs an engine rebuild (piston rings or cylinder sleeves). So, if you're ever considering buying a piece of equipment and it has blowby, think long and hard about whether or not you are willing to do an engine rebuild in the near future. • Alright, you've flashed up that schmoo definition 3 or 4 times now. Pausing the video to see if you have a "Schmoo" t-shirt. If you do, I'm buying it. One moment please. . . Awww, no "schmoo" t-shirt. In fact, no t-shirts at all. I already have the gloves and fender cover. Get a couple t-shirts, bro. 😋 • So, back to the action. • Welcome to this video, Eli. Great to have you with us. • Off to an ominous start. The bolts on the turbine housing are "not good". • Removing the turbine housing from the turbo. Wow! That's a lot of hammering. 🤪 • Time for a little overnight baking. You know, like a cake. 🤒 600F (315C) for about 6 hours, to burn off all the gunk and schmoo. 😉 • Hah! The burned off gunk and schmoo coalesced into a "Like & Subscribe" cardboard sign. 😂 • Ouchies. Turbine housing looking very pitted. Heat shield missing its hat. Bearing housing might be salvageable. Compressor housing and compressor wheel look okay, but the turbine wheel has a worn hub and might not be recoverable. • A quick rundown on the status of the parts, and "However. . .bad news". WAH WAH wah Wah (I don't know how to spell that "you lose" sound from The Price is Right gameshow, so go easy on me). The turbine wheel is officially a lost cause. And, of course, the hat-less heat shield can't be reused. So, we'll have to order replacements • Uh, oh. Parts (turbine wheel and heat shield) are not available. 😢 • We're back with Curt at the parts counter. It's official, ADS was not able to save Large Marge's turbocharger, due to parts not being available. That hatless heat shield has cancer (probably from all that smoking, eh Jon?), but ADS could make one, if necessary. The turbo wheel, however, required replacement. Did I mention "parts not being available? And the turbo housing is scrap and not readily available. • And here's Marge's solution. . .an entirely new exhaust system, from stem to stern. . .a new exhaust manifold, a new turbocharger, and a new exhaust system with a muffler. Large Marge WILL breathe again! 👍 • A quick explanation of turbo lag, with a delightful video clip of a mouse running in a wheel on a turbo. Awwwww. 🙂 • Wow, that's a snazzy exhaust system. 👍 • Curt summarizing Jon's upcoming video. "He's going to have to do some cutting. He's going to have to do some welding. He's probably going t have to say some four-letter words." 😂 Looking forward to it. 👍 • And now. . .the million dollar question, as per usual. What did it cost? For the inspection of Marge's existing turbo and attempt to clear her of all the cancer. . . no charge. Bless you, ADS. Editor's note: I'll just summarize the solution's price. . .$3,825, for an exhaust system, with turbo, that will likely be the last parts standing on Marge decades in the future. • Curt, you and the skilled artisan at ADS are absolutely the best. Well done, and thanks again. 😉

And yeah, i dont want to give you any ideas, but i think you forgot to add 40% for "in flat tion." 😛 and further, thanks for the education on turbo wear characteristics, some of which i did not know about. I'm old, so i remember early turbo introduction to automobiles reliability issues decades ago, so I still want to avoid a turbo in any of my cars as long as i can, recent advances on automotive turbo installation tech notwithstanding.🤔
