The idea is to educate people, not withhold info worrying it may take away business. Most trade secrets are ridiculous, usually just basic knowledge. The problem is the clueless customer who doesn't know any better because the knowledge is being kept from him. I learned everything I know because it was passed down from the previous generation. When these guys are gone, the knowledge and skill dies with them. Its better to share it and pass it along than being greedy and taking it into the grave forever.

I usually pick up a Haynes book for each of the vehicles I've owned over the years - not necessarily to do the shade-tree mechanic thing, but to be informed on what is involved in repairing or replacing a specific part on that car. Each copy has a chapter on the steps involved in a general rebuild of an engine, and it includes how to assess certain major defects in the bottom half of the engine by the type of wear in the bearings on the crankshaft. One failure mode was 'tapered journal', and here you've finally explained how that failure mode comes to be, so thank you for that!

Hello Dave: Thank you for this important video on surface finishes, use of a profilometor, + the basic dressing of the grinding wheel prior to grinding of the journals of a crankshaft. Dave you are to be commended for your detailed explanations of surface finish per application as well as the proper setup prior to grinding. I must say that you & your son are the first time I've ever seen a profilometer used in an automotive application. After 18 years in the aerospace industry we utilized a profilometer almost on a daily basis especially for armatures, & bearing bores. You also brought back many memories of the proper grinding operations especially needed for close tolerance work per application. Sorry for the rant but you & your crew constantly amaze me regarding knowledge, individual abilities, + the discipline to adhere to proper procedures & practices. Thank you again sir. DAVE. THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS. I worked for a automotive certification company, you need to put out a "XYZ Certification" of shops who are QUALIFIED to do your level of work so that not everyone who lives near you can get repairs done right. Our company became rich, but what we did was we certified which body shops had the right types of equipment to do a quality repair and gave them a "certification" with a wall plaque, etc, and then we did a little marketing for their shops that got them business (this was how they justified the COST to become certified). If you need help, I'm a programmer who does and did this work for them to make this all easy for both sides.

When you have rotating assemblies spinning like a child’s top, everything better be fitting flush and level or something will be stressed by a poor friction plane. The engine builder went through all the effort it’s too bad they didnt catch those out of spec measurements before assembly. The surface profilometer that Dave has is probably 2500-3000$ bucks but there’s no substitute for it . I own three classic bmws .All with Alusil v8 blocks. Which is 80% Aluminum and 20% silicon. The surface finish is absolutely vital for the low tension rings to seal and prevent oil consumption/ blow by. My M5 engine is 25 years old now and quite rare (used motors are now 12,000$ and up) Dave is probably one of a select few who I would trust rebuilding that engine. His passion is still there after all these years

I worked in CAT dealer Long Island in my 20-something days that had similar operation with general repair and machine shop and that is the ONLY way to go. We left Diesel School knowing basics to rebuild heads, turbos, alternators, starters, even high pressure pumps and run test stand. In the real world many of us lose some of those skills but in your shop can apply a full set. From fuel injection troubleshooting to engine building, suspension etc. The trainees should be paying you!
