Roy Freirich Have always loved this song. My aunt bought it for me on a 45, when I spent the summer with her in 1985 - I was nine at the time. To this day, this song makes me think of that Summer, playing it on a record player, at her house. By any chance, would you know where the video was filmed? It’s a beautiful song and have listened to it a lot over the past few days.

This song healed a lot of broken, and often angry, hearts. Back in 1985 (I was 29), I would go to the I-Beam Club in San Francisco's Haight-Asbury District, a gay club, now in the annals of San Francisco gay history. The DJ I knew would play it in one of his sets at just after 10:30PM, right when the place began to thump. The floor would get packed. Everyone in the place sang along to the chorus of the song. Right where it reached, *"My man, I don't need you to be bringing me down,"* the whole place would erupt, yell out and act out the motions like in the video. *(I did not know there was a video of the song at the time.)* By then, everyone on the dance floor and along the walls would break out dancing like crazy. Total pandemonium. They would be dancing on the barstools. The bar tenders would be dancing on the bar counters. If it was your time to get over someone who did you wrong, THAT was your chance for the evening. It worked for me. One of my all-time favorite Aretha Franklin songs. *(PS: A regular to the I-Beam as a patron, and a few times as a live-to-track performer, was the legendary, fabulous Sylvester, who, by the way, performed backups on this song and several others on the "Who's Zoomin' Who?" album.)*

This is one of Aretha's best videos. What's noticeable at the beginning of the song is how her voice was much lower in the '80s compared to previous decades. Aretha started out as a high soprano (she could have been an opera singer), but the chain smoking caught up with her in 1980. Her voice was noticeably different on her first album at Arista.

Aretha started smoking at age 13! For most of her adult life, she smoked up to 3 packs per day. She didn't quit until 1992 when she was 50. At the time, she said smoking was "messing with voice". I could have told her that in 1980! Unfortunately, it was like one of the main causes of her pancreatic cancer.
