Ellie H People have a persona on social media and because there isn’t an actual dialogue happening they can spout whatever they want, no matter how radical, if it gets them likes and/or retweets then it seems to be fine in their eyes. Also, in real life, people are willing to debate and have a talk well at least where I’m from, but on social media, the only time you can actually debate someone is if there are insults involved. If you do believe that social media is real life then you must have a really skewed perception of the world at large, the average person doesn't give a fuck about what Donald Trump tweets and neither do I but social media blows it out of proportion.
@technoguyx4 жыл бұрын
@@EllieUltra Of course it's not meant literally. The point is that facts about our world tend to be ridiculously inflated or distorted by vocal minorities and personalities on social media. So if you consider e.g. a given country's Twitter users, their collective opinion doesn't reflect that country's collective opinion on a given topic -- it's a simple fact of sampling bias.
@EllieUltra4 жыл бұрын
@@Joseph_El-Cheikh I think a lot of people are like that, but certainly not all people. I type like I talk, which is why I don't have a name or photo that isn't me. It's all still real life, albeit with some really fake people at times.

Really needed this. Before using Twitter, I was sure that any arguement there wouldn’t affect me since I know most of them are pathetic, but after using Twitter for 4 months (no I barely engaged in arguements and mostly used it for art and interacting positively with fandoms and supporting content creators), I’ve become more disillusioned with what to believe. The funny thing is that while Twitter arguments are highly pathetic, you’d end up thinking twice wondering if they got a point. Really, it’s extremely stressful on my hand to see unwanted discourse on my timeline and as much as how I understand that there are some things that must be brought up or discussed, majority of it is just pointless if you fight to win an argument or shove your superiority unto others instead of trying to understand and correct each others wrongs It makes me question even more and brought me great doubt on certain people, but at the end of the day, it’s the internet so of course it’s problematic

When a celebrity is accused of Sexual Assault, it's heaven for the users. They get off with tearing accused celebrity down, whether it be memes, expressing their disgust. Then once the facts come out they pretend that it's made up because it doesn't fit their narrative of said celebrity being what they're accused of. They HATE the truth. Just adding to this sage advice, don't argue with strangers on social media at all. KZbin, Quora, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Reddit, blogs, internet forums, etc. It's a waste of valuable time, and it makes the world a darker, more divided place. What do you achieve from "winning" an internet argument? Nothing. You won't get paid, you won't feel better, and the other person won't listen. You will NOT change their mind. You will NOT make a positive difference in this world. What you will do is spend hours or even days just driving yourself insane while getting internet trolls to laugh at you and insult you. Just use social media to keep in touch with friends and family. That's all it's good for. If you want to debate with someone, then join a debate class. It's not that hard.

It's pretty problematic... The discourse between ideas and the stigma of being "wrong" has really fueled this to a boiling point. I'm not afraid of confrontation, it's a critical function for the growth of our society, so I will engage on Twitter but with a high degree of skepticism. I've actually only had 1 instance where it devolved into tweet argument and eventual blocking, everyone other time has been an intellectual debate. From "the complexities of English language and how words sound despite literal meaning" to "this is fake news and here is the real source the Vice article is misquoting", the key is to cut contact as soon as they become too stubborn to meet you halfway on anything, to not be afraid of the intensity, and hold no investment in the outcome. It's still literally a waste of your personal time especially in meaningless categories like fictional work. But having to engage in debate and discourse is a way to sharpen or reevaluate ideas and this fucking society wants to cater to what people already want and give them an echo chamber bubble to live in because hey, capitalism is great, right? "Who fucking cares if you can't hold an interesting conversation with anyone who is remotely different from you, you didn't need those brain calls, check out these tailor made ads and vote for who Facebook told you to. Hahaha live laugh love, we got rainbow underwear on sale because we know you're so thoughtful of other's struggles, just remember to cancel and shame people who don't understand everything about human rights from birth. Don't bother talking to them because ideas are scary to our power structure and you're too much of an internet sjw with anxiety to know how to write or speak persuasively!" I hate this fucking division. with ever fiber of my being but I also don't want to grow complacent or hurt myself mentally struggling against it. But struggle I must, as much as I will also think and question, even to my detriment.
