@Norris Cool I'm open to a lot of different genres of music. Whether it be blues, jazz, hip-hop, stoner rock, deathgrind, ambient, fusion, black metal ... etc., one of the genres I don't choose to listen to is 2010's pop. I consider the Motown sound to be "pop" because it was omnipresent (I wouldn't say all that representative) during the dramatic political and societal upheaval of that time. More as a form of escapism. I find it hypocritical when a person obsesses over black music but says that the US is going straight to oblivion once Johnson ever has motives at hand to restrict segregation and succeeds and when you ask why you have some Supremes vinyl under your stereo, they'll say some shit about how this is what they're best at and they should stay in their place and never dare to voice their own personal opinions. I call it "The Second Harlem Renaissance". It wasn't until the 70's when R&B in particular became more up front about politics. In one year there was the slick, sultry production and biting Nixon-era satire of Curtis Mayfield's solo debut and Sly and the Family Stone changed their multi-ethnic lineup to transform themselves as prominent figures *supposedly* linked to members of the Black Panther Party. This was the first record distributed to the pop market to feature a drum machine (not Kraftwerk, whom I admire greatly). This was done, like you said before, by people of color. There was a balance between the groupie-banging classic rock, infectious funk grooves and coke-saturated disco. Still, while many seemed to embrace the new sounds of the black community, at the core was racial bias, subjective, bigoted, and condescendingly superficial standards towards beauty and anything in between. We had a segregationist running for President for Christ's sake. MTV had a strict black code. In its first year and a half, there was rarely any black musicians showcased. You have white (mostly rock) bands that soak in disco, voice their appreciation towards black styles of music, and use it to their benefit. Blondie's "Rapture" and Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless". (David Byrne of the band was listening to a lot of Fela Kuti at the time and later founded Luaka Bop, which is a label that features primarily Afrobeat and sometimes Arabic, Caribbean, and Trinidadian dance pop, folk and hip-hop) Which are bops and both with *rap* breakdowns, are prime examples. MJ's publicist (when promoting "Billie Jean") told the executives at their studios if you don't release the video for his new single, I'm forcing both Columbia and Epic to pull their rosters' videos from regular rotation and I'm going to expose you and your utter refusal to play something like Rick James, Shalamar, Prince or Morris Day.

Lol not trying to defend her or anything, but when you live or are from a country where the standard skin complexion is not just one color, it really depends on the region within that country. If you want an example of a full on Italian that’s tan or olive, look at Alesia Cara. The same thing goes for Hispanic, Indians, Middle Eastern and so on. There is not a standard skin color. And if anyone disagrees then you’re practicing what’s known to be colorism.

To anyone who's trying to defend her by using her Italian ancestry- she's white, just accept it. Yes, Italians tend to be more tan than your average white person. So what? Literally every race comes in a variety of skin tones. There are some Asian people with paper-white skin, there are some Asian people with tan, olive skin, there are darker skinned black people, there are lighter skinned black people. That doesn't suddenly put them in some racial sub-category. Italians are just a slightly darker shade of white, as is Ariana Grande.

No, there are absolute "sub-races". "white" and "asian" are incredibly vague and could mean a huge number of people that are different. "White" could mean northwestern european, as in britain, france, germany, etc. or it could mean mediterrianian, like italian, greek, spanish - both groups are related but not identical and i personally wouldn't lump them together, as the climates are quite different. The same with asians, East or South east asians, literally the difference between a people who have lived in a jungle and people who have lived in temperate / siberian areas. And besides the whole racialist shit is so american anyways i cannot wait until we stop looking at the world as racial blobs.

Karols K I am Italian. From Sicily, the South, where Italians are considered to be darker in complexion. And of course there's a lot of people with dark skin. There's also black Italians, since "Italian" is - as Alicia said - a nationality. But this doesn't give any Italian person the right to claim to be a person of color. Italians are generally considered white because we mostly are. You can be a person of color AND be Italian, but being Italian doesn't automatically mean you are a person of color. I'm pale as fuck, caucasian and with reddish/dark blond hair. I have never experienced racism in my life and the same goes for my entire family, even the ones who get literally brown under the sun in summer. I wouldn't DARE to claim the struggle of a person of color.
It's so painfully obvious that the people saying "but she's italian tho!!" are north-americans who have never been to the south of Europe. As a spanish girl: almost everyone is white, from here to Italy, and the racism is real on black, brown and dark skinned people in general. I have no idea where this mysconception comes from but inform yourself people.

As a mixed person (with the whole stereotypical curly hair, light skin, etc.) I really hate the term "mixed girl aesthetic." Many of us had unique struggles in the word trying to come to terms with our identity. There is a lot of privilege that comes with mixed skin, of course. But it's not helpful to be called an "aesthetic" when mixed features are being accepted/celebrated. There is a way to acknowledge the beauty of mixed girls without disparaging or taking any beauty away from darker skinned black girls.

Even as a white woman who doesn't see myself as a social justice warrior, there's something about a white girl trying to be black that rubs me the wrong way. It's only until now that I realize its the fact that these girls want the black girl look and swagger, without the black girl experience or struggle. It doesn't feel like they earned that look. It's like when I got made fun of for my freckles, and now girls are drawing that ish on their face. Or when I was made fun of for being a "four eyes", but now they show off fake lenses all while having 20/20 vision. Obviously very different extremes, but it does beg the question, "Oh so NOW that you decide it looks good. Where was your enthusiasm years ago?"

You don’t have the right to make decisions for what people are and are not entitled to feel if you’ve never been in their shoes. i'm mixed (asian and white) and i have had many full white people say stuff like that to me. had a white girl even say she wanted babies with every race "like it's pokemon, gotta catch em all". i was grossed out to say the least. there is a lot of fetishization and diminishing/glazing over mixed people's struggles while only focusing on the ~aesthetics~ and glamorizing potential looks without people realizing how messed up a lot of us are because of cultural dichotomies and never being truly enough for either side. mixed kids are literally treated like dolls now, be there for looks and bragging rights, but we don't want to hear your issues. also it has been difficult seeing people who are clearly against interracial marriages still and noticing how different they will treat you and your parents when they see you. interracial marriages in the u.s. are still pretty new and there are loads of people alive who were against it then and against it now.

Purses and clothes can go in and out of styles. But skin colors, No. I'm mixed and even I hate this stuff. A skin color is not an accessory. It's okay to tan, but pls don't go 5 shades darker. Some ones ethnicity is not a piece of clothing to wear for a bit.

this whole “shes italian!!” argument is so old... first of all, her tan is obviously fake and if you can’t see that then you’re delusional, and even if her tan was natural, that’s not the only thing that shows how she’s gotten into the whole mixed girl aesthetic, its the tan but also the way she speaks, the way she carries herself and many other things. or are gonna tell me that her suddenly starting to use AAVE is also bc shes italian? i can assure that tan italians don’t look mixed
@accountnolongerinuse20444 жыл бұрын
Thing is that I myself wouldn't be saying anything if she actually was tan during her Victorious times. She was PALE. If she actually was a tan italian from the beginning, nobody would've said anything. Now over the years she has just gotten darker and darker and she's giving off that ''popular'' mixed race look.
@amaliab66824 жыл бұрын
I posted this above but I'm sorry I'm gonna say it again: The vast majority of Italians look just as white as most other types of whites, SOME Italians are darker, and guess what? They're the minority and have always have been and still are looked down on by other Italians in Italy and called all sorts of awful shit, so it's overwhelmingly disingenuous for 4th gen Italian-Americans who are naturally pale and would NEVER naturally tan That dark to use the darker Italians that their grandparents or great-grandparents would have spat on as a "gotchya" to justify fake tanning themselves 10 shades darker than they would naturally tan. Ariana's tan is ridiculous and obviously not even close to being natural, both her parents look like generic white people that could be from almost anywhere in Europe. End of discussion. Most of my family immigrated to Italy and has been living there for decades, Italians are white and Italians in Italy consider themselves white and are as racist and xenophobic as any other white people. So Americans who are the descendants of Italians and desperately want to distance themselves from whiteness now that it's "trendy" to be ~ambiguous can take a hike. It's transparent and disingenuous as hell. These people have practically nothing to do with Italian culture anyways.

@VentraleStar5 жыл бұрын
@@JaysWife White is not a static term and is used differently in time and place. 100 years ago Italians and Irish were definitely white because race based off phenotypes was a thing. 300 years ago it wasn't. White would be a descriptor of skin color but the American classification (because it was largely American; many European societies had a more national view of race) of race was not a thing and even when it did come into social consciousness not all modern "white" groups were actually considered white. There's actually book called "How the Irish Became White" that's pretty interesting (also Italians were never considered" low class" in anything, I mean this is the homeland of the Roman empire, just saying) We have to remember that race isn't really genetically sound and is a horrible classification of people that makes little genetic sense.

This is the first video of yours I've watched and I just want to say I really appreciate the way you convey your perspective. Growing up we didnt talk about race in my home, not negatively or positively it just wasn't spoken about, in the last few years I've been seeking out a better understanding of black women's perspective in this world and I've found that it's often presented with such animosity- which is completley warranted, but leads to a lot of feelings of guilt and shame, and feeling like there is no place for me in these conversations, even as a listener. I really appreciate that you're creating an open and safe dialogue here for all people to grow and learn and change for the better.
