It hasn't been long since I finished Breaking Bad. Everyone told me watch this series it's too good. I knew the basics: a chemistry teacher and his student cooking meth, but I had never heard that Walt had cancer. This series really touched me because both my parents died of the same cancer as Walt. That scene where his whole family blames him for not talking about it...everyone talks about how they feel but doesn't let Walt speak. Imagine the inner chaos this person feels. You knew you were going to die one day but now you know the clock is ticking and you have to comfort the people you love...it's horrible!

Adderall is just amphetamine. So feeling edgy before taking amphetamine in the morning is pretty similar to needing a hit of meth to take the edge off. For people who have ADHD, the amphetamine class of stimulants work very differently in their bodies...... many addicts may well be self medicating, if they also have ADHD etc

The key to what is happening is Walt's sense of masculine pride. He didn't consider treatment so his only option is to go somewhere extreme so that his family has money after his depth. The look on his face when Hank suggests he will take care of his wife and kids is pure resentment. No one is supportiing his family but Him, even after his death. "Ken Wins" is a pure asshole, but Walt's resentment of anyone who appears to be doing better than him is almost palpable. Cooking Meth is illiegal and immoral, but he'll do it because he knows that he is absolutely the best at iit. That feeds the pride monster...

It JUST clicked for me that I am Jessie's younger brother, because I know what it's like to KNOW they're always thinking about the 'screw up' older sibling that screwed up when they're PUSHING AND PRAISING you to greatness. It's very funny that the show operates in 2 separate genres speaking to Walter's double life he's living, and that's why, relative to their respective genres, Skylar occupies so much more of a viewer's criticisms by being a karen in a slice of life genre, instead of criticizing the literal murderers and drug dealers. I love that somehow in the normal human brain, its easier to forgive a violent drug lord for some sympathetic qualities than it is to forgive a stressed pregnant woman for being kind of obnoxious. After watching Succession, I now just can't shake that Walt and Jesse are Tom and Greg. Walt, like Tom, always has to take the crap and be mild mannered and polite, and then to his lapdog he gets to be as much of an asshole as he's always wanted to be. I mean, Tom has to take more crap, but he's also rich and does it to himself. Walt could totally just ask for help and rely on others like his brother in law to support his family, but his ego is too fragile to handle that.

It's because criticizing murder is obvious. We all know murder is bad. There's no point to going "oh nooo there's murder in a drug war" or "oh no I can't believe Walter would profit off of addicts!" That's their life and/or the premise of the show. But being a Karen - you can have the exact same position in your life and just...NOT self-righteously ask to see the manager. I'm aware there is an unbalanced contingent that believes Skylar genuinely deserves mistreatment by Walt but in terms of the direct reaction to behavior moment to moment, Skylar is often more off-putting in the context she lives in.

I think Skyler’s fatal flaw is that she’s controlling which made Walter feel miserable. Skyler didn’t keep his trust by telling their family’s issues to literally everyone even though Walter was not comfortable with it. She thought she was doing good but it was tragic.

Look at Walt at the beginning of ep. 1. Walt, even before he learned he had cancer, had given up on life. Why else does a guy with his talent end up teaching in HS instead of finding a position in a research lab? He loves his wife and his kid, but Skylar is in charge in the relationship because he is suppressing himself. If you've seen the show before, he becomes what he becomes because that's who he really is, not because his wife drove him there.

Skyler's no perfect saint but it's absolutely insane to suggest she's in any way responsible for him cooking meth lmfao. He has a shitty job because of choices he made, and if his relationship is unfulfilling it's primarily because of him. She's at least trying. She also discussed the pot thingy with Marie and it blew out of proportion. Walter was proud to a fault and Skyler's actions enabled him to make the worst possible choices. I think that's the reason why they were not a good match. they brought out the worst in eachother.

Great reaction. Having someone to bounce thoughts off and discuss is definitely a positive. One thing that has stuck with me for a long time that this episode starts to highlight: This show only works - makes sense in some way - because it's set in the USA where, generally, you can go in to crippling bankruptcy inducing debt by being sick (esp with something as common as cancer) - even with so called "health insurance". Not that being sick in places with universal healthcare can't cause financial difficulties, just not on this scale.

Even in high school, I wasn't seeing weed myself and it wasn't common in my social circle BUT I did know through the grapevine that kids my age were buying/selling weed and ecstasy out of their lockers, and it was common at the parties I wasn't ever invited to 😂 I didn't personally try weed until I was 19, but many people I know started at 12-14 on average. I even had one friend who started doing weed, shrooms, and other drugs at 10 or 11, and was already sober by the time we met Freshman year. It really just depends on your social circles and home life, I guess. I also get the sense that Jesse's younger brother had so much pressure on him to be the perfect son, making up for the parenting foibles of the "bad kid", that he probably actively sought out some form of rebellion, and maybe some way to be slightly more like his big brother because he felt like the TYPE of attention Jesse got was preferable to the constant pressure for perfectionism.

Watching this back in 2023, it’s so funny how much information shows use to pack into episodes bc of commercials! You had to be able to rope ppl in who are flipping the channels. How I got into so many shows. Now we have the binge models bc if no ads or we’re forced to go week to week depending on the show. It’s so interesting. I can see the pros and cons of both. I binged breaking bad and wasn’t crazy obsessed. I liked it but not my fav show of all time. But watching it whenever y’all drop videos gives me that week to week vibe and I totally get how ppl were hooked before prestige tv even became a thing. It’s crazy how fast y’all are picking up the nuances. We’ve truly been trained to watch prestige tv so you start picking up on cues from episodes 1 unlike 2008 each week blew our minds bc we expected a high fast paced impact episode every week with a predictable outcome and BB helped changed the game for basic cable like HBO did for premium cable

Regarding the Jesse home situation. You can only support and help someone for a limited time. He isn’t ready to stop or address his addiction, at some point you move from support to enabling someone to continue to damage themselves. That damage rarely stays confined to the addicted person either. Neither blood or marriage obligates someone to be responsible for another’s recovery. This can be drugs, gambling or alcohol. Edit to say I enjoy the two (A&M) hosts watching shows together, it’s a great dynamic because they are different enough to bring different views but don’t clash over them - cool reaction, I may actually get around to watching season 2 of BB.

The only thing I'll say is that no parent should ever give up on their child. I'm not saying they should be enabling the kid's habit or anything like that, but "tough love" doesn't really work when the child thinks the parents just gave up on them.

@@SlCKNESS_ Setting clear boundaries of behaviour and sticking to that is not giving up on someone. Seems like the parents got to the point of not having Jesse in the house (due to drugs I’d guess - he is taking, cooking and selling meth). Yet when he turns up, parents have a discussion and still let him stay. Next day drugs are found and they talk to him, he isn’t believed, which sucks but would be consistent with previous behaviours. They have a responsibility to their other child as well. They may not have got it right but without Jesse in the house, it would have been obvious the (young teen?) brother was experimenting with drugs. Jesse had only recently finished dissolving the body of a murdered gang member and police informant, due to a bad drug deal where they were almost shot - call me old fashioned, not sure raising a child in proximity to that is ideal.

He says Domingo was his informant and also ratted out Emilio (leading to the DEA raid in the pilot episode). How Emilio got out of jail in 2 days is explained in a much later episode.

And Jesse said he knew Emilio since the third grade. All of that did not happen overnight. And his strained relationship with his parents is a lot more than just pot, when his dad says "uppers downers who knows". All of that says many months even a couple of years minimum to me. Yes I know that is not evidence that would find him guilty in court. But also meth heads don't always brush their teeth all the time either. He could go days/weeks not brushing if he was using a lot.

It is an interesting oversight for BBad, considering how good they are at attention to detail elsewhere. I chalk it up to them envisioning him as an empathetic character -- we'd probably be less likely to sympathize with him if we thought of him as a dirty and disgusting degenerate.

@@mikegilgenbach4840 Meth mouth is mainly from severe dehydration and bacteria forming from poor hygeine, and not eating or drinking water properly. Chronic users pick at their skin so you start seeing scabs on their face, arms, and legs, and then start getting the ghoulish look with sunken cheeks, racoon eyes from sleep deprivation, and strangely many develop a lazy eye as well. There are many people out there who are or were functional users (like me) and you would never know, I have all my teeth and they're pearly white, haven't even had a cavity.

Jesse needed parents who encouraged his artistic side. I can imagine that he was probably a very lost and lonely teen who turned to drugs and good company to distract himself. I always got the impression that there is a lot of emotional neglect in their family. Even with all their extra curriculars, his sibling is turning to drugs to cope with reality.

Weed was readily available to those interested starting in middle school (6th grade, I was 11), and I had a friend who got stoned out of his mind that first day of 6th grade, but that's LAUSD for you. It was actually much harder to get alcohol. I'm sure it would have been possible to get harder drugs through the same networks that sold weed, but wasn't really aware of anyone doing them until high school.

I think the incident with the car, while played for humor, is actually the first time that Walt starts to show his true nature. All he cares about at that moment is satisfying his id, and other considerations are irrelevant. I guess I'm saying it should be obvious even this early who the villain is, but a lot of people still don't get it.

I know it's weird, but I had a dream where Ariana was someone I knew in person except her name was Deandra, her and some other girl were hanging out with me and they both started having some kind of brain issue where they would get fixated on some kind of idea they were visualizing and it paralyzed them, almost like tonic seizures - just sorta staring off and getting locked up. I was trying to help them - stimulate their brains by showing them stuff and trying to move their arms and such, and they slowly came out of it but it was like a process over a few minutes where slowly their arms would unlock and I could move them around, they'd loosen up, and it was like they were slowly coming back from some place far away in their heads - regaining consciousness. It was super trippy. I hope Ariana doesn't have some kind of tonic seizure that I psychically predicted in a dream! I think the name Deandra would totally suit her though, if she ever wants to tell people that's what her name is when she doesn't want to tell some new people her real name that she's meeting. Anyway...

I first smoked pot when I was 11yo. My punk-rock older half-sister who was ~15yo at the time, shaved short died hair, her and her punk anarchy friend invited me down to her room while our dad and her mom (me stepmom) were gone xmas shopping, and let me take a hit of weed. I was coughing for 10 min straight, ran up to the bathroom trying to rinse my throat out somehow. 20 minutes later we're all hanging out in the kitchen eating munchies and she says something and I just start laughing.... and laughing ....and laughing ....and laughing ....and laughing You know, that stuck-in-a-loop robotic laughing that you just can't break free from the first time you get baked. I also remember we were sitting on the family computer (this is the 90s, mind you) on dialup internet and she's looking up Billy Idol or something, or some punk band, and I just remember this feeling of "coming home", like in all the infiniteness of the universe, I finally found where I truly belong. Talk about a mindwarp for an 11yo. I ended up experimenting with all the drugs after that experience. (gateway drug for sure, lol) and was eventually shooting up oxycontin, dilaudid, heroin, etc... I even burglarized a pharmacy, stole all the shootable pills, and ran away to the bay area with a backpack full of painkillers and needles. Ended up getting caught - because someone worried about me who knew what I did told the police anonymously. Whoever they were, they probably saved my life. Ended up on probation, but relapsing, because of the allure of mainlining dope. In and out of jail. Eventually, while I was clean, 5 years later (still on probation) met a really nice girl, we hit it off, had a kid, and I relapsed and then graduated from shooting up opiates to shooting up meth. What a rush. It was all fun and games for the first week or two, I felt sharp as a tack, like I'd been half asleep for years and meth put me back on top of things, woke me up and make me more positive and capable (lol). I was homeless in the streets, living off the kindness of strangers in my hometown. Then one night, walking aimlessly to pass the night hours and hopefully find cash on the ground, I saw some headlights shining on a wall from around the corner, someone was creeping on me. I stood there, unsure if the light on the wall I could see was actually getting brighter, if someone was actually creeping up around the corner. After a minute I decided it wasn't worth the risk, and it totally looked like a car was about to come around the corner, so I ran. I looked back and I could see the light getting brighter, they knew I was running away and were coming. I ran up into the woods off the edge of town, I could hear them chasing after me. I bolted down a narrow side trail and then into some bushes - and sat frozen like that the rest of the night, afraid of making a single sound, keeping my breathing shallow. I was seeing military camo dudes in the bushes across the trail from me, hearing radio comms, etc... That was the beginning of the end. It just got worse. I *knew* that homeland security was after me, because they thought I was a terrorist, because X Y and Z. They were hunting me! They wanted to see who my terrorist friends were! They were following me everywhere, for months. It was a waking nightmare, and it was my life. You couldn't convince me I was delusional, I would convince you that I was actually in fact being followed. A lot of very strange and serendipitous things happened during those few months of my life where I was homeless, shooting crank while hiding in the bushes, that not only convinced me but everyone I knew that I was most certainly being haunted by some kind of group or organization. My daughter was coming up on 1yo, and I'd come home for a little while and then go back to town and be homeless, starving, and experiencing methamphetamine-induced psychosis. Gradually, over a few months, I spent more time at home with my lady and our baby girl, and less time blasting off in the streets of my hometown. Before long, I didn't want to leave home. I wanted to be with my lady and our baby girl, and that was it. Becoming a parent changed my priorities around. Now we have two daughters, 12 and 8 years old. They're the polar opposite sides of me, purely. Well, except they both have attitudes, and know that they're hawt shizzle. :) Anyway. Meth is fun for a while but then you spend way too much time just figuring out that you wasted a lot of time doing meth. I'm lucky I only wasted a few months, before my oldest daughter could even remember that I was ever gone in the first place. A lot of people spend decades getting spun out and never figuring out that they could've done something more awesome with themselves. Not sure why I shared all of this. I hope someone gets something out of it. :|

It’s harsh but the only way you can help an addict is to not enable them. Before I got sober I thought the parents were overly cruel but they did the right thing for Jessie (and their other son) from the jump. + we didn’t see all the harm he caused previously

It's true but I feel it's important that the people who love the addict always make it clear they love them and are there for them. They just can't give them money for shit and need to keep strict boundaries... in this case sadly they kept the boundary about no drugs in the house but they wrongly accused him

I can understand them very much, too. But it is cpupled with these creepy undertones that they mightve never been there for him and only cared about academic achievements - at least that is the vibe i get from their treatment of little brother (who alrrady uses pot). Also, jesses comment in s2 about the aunt ... so i would say why they are right, they probably also created jesse and his addiction by never being emotionally available. Or even caring about his emotional needs. Also one can argue that jesse has adhd and his addiction mightve started as self-medication.

Not sure about the data regarding family support, but research suggests that when the government provides food and housing for people with addictions it does not decrease the probability that they will overcome their addiction, and if housing is coupled with access to treatment it makes it more likely they will curb their addiction. So there isn't empirical support for the enablement theory, but it's possible the dynamics differ when the aid is from friends and family.
